It also allows you to get around the city with relative ease and use the Tube like a local rather than a tourist.”

Indeed, if you arrive in May, specifically, you might find you have the whole city to yourself. Although outdoor markets and street fairs are fully open, embracing the warming air, the international arrivals have yet to accumulate. Many native Londoners, meanwhile, step outside of town to take advantage of the multiple bank holiday weekends marking the month.

Best times to visit London for good weather

“June and July definitely have the best weather,” says Chris Perone, general manager at NoMad London. “Long days and warm evenings are perfect for strolling the city’s endless, meandering pavements.”

To his point, as the summer equinox approaches in mid-June, it starts getting light before 5 am and darkness doesn’t set in until well after 9 pm. With more than 16 hours of sun to play with, there’s ample opportunity to enjoy a lengthy morning walk alongside canals and greenery. Then, have a full English breakfast — or a legendary Sunday roast — before perusing the shops and restaurants of Mayfair.

You can even parade primary thoroughfares such as Regent Street, which shuts down to vehicular traffic this time of year. Or, take off toward the River Thames and check out the city’s newest observation deck, Lift 109, built into the chimney of the historic Battersea Power Station.

Then, return to green space in time for BST Hyde Park. The concert series, which runs nightly from the end of June through the beginning of July, carries with it world-class talent. Last year, headliners included Billy Joel, Pink, Lana Del Rey and Bruce Springsteen.

Best times to visit London for lower prices

“August and January are undoubtedly when you can grab the best deals,” Perone confirms. “While August can be a bit hot, everything is open and the city just has this buzz with the pubs overflowing into the streets. January is dark and can be damp, but that’s when the fireside tipples are at their best.”

As it applies to the former, simply make sure you’re booking a hotel — like the NoMad — that has adequate air conditioning. Yes, August temperatures have been inching toward the 100-degree mark in recent years, but it’s never as muggy as, say, a New York summer. So, it’s worth contending with the climate in exchange for those precious reduced rates, which apply to everything from overnight stays to rental cars.

As for January, you’re looking at an average of 12 days worth of rain throughout the month, with temperatures sitting squarely in 40-degree territory. It’s not ideal, and yet, as a result, the indelible cosiness of British pub culture is dialled up to its maximal value. It’s a fantastic month to mingle with locals in Chelsea and Belgravia. Make your way past the terraced alabaster townhouses and amble into any number of legendary gastropubs, including The Harwood Arms, the only Michelin-starred pub in London. Or, enjoy new venues such as Bóha, which delivers on the promise of one of the most satisfying Sunday roasts in town. Just make sure to pack an umbrella and jumper.

Best times to visit for making spirits bright

London is one of the most festive locales on earth come the holiday season. Ornately lit Christmas trees populate public squares, wreaths and red ribbons dress doorways, and a diverse array of themed markets set up shop from Clapham to Clapton.

Worst times to visit London

“Contrary to popular belief, summer is the worst time to visit London,” says Corcoran. “If there’s hot weather, the underground is almost unbearable, and if you’re used to air conditioning, I would strongly recommend against it. You will feel stressed, rushed, hot, and flustered trying to get around the city with the warmer temperatures and stultifying foot traffic.”

You’ll also endure the highest airfare if booking your trip between June and July. If you’re determined to battle the crowds, however, consider taking a train out to the countryside for at least a few days during your stay. The inclusive beach town of Brighton to the south, or the bucolic countryside of the Cotswolds to the west are ideal, if not predictable, summertime retreats.

“July is a tough time in London,” adds Perone. “With so many events, hot weather, and lots of out-of-towners in general, London can feel a bit cramped and stuffy. “And the Tube network… it’s an oven.”

So-called “deep-Tube lines,” which include the most popular services, like Piccadilly, Central, Victoria, and Northern, are all free of air conditioning. Needless to say, it’s a challenging experience to be cramped among strangers in a 90-degree train car. But if you stick with the sub-surface network, the train cars are not only temperature-controlled, they’re also more spacious. Primary examples include the District, Circle, Hammersmith & City, and Metropolitan lines, as well as the Wi-Fi-equipped Elizabeth line.

In a quick, 47-second clip shared on social media, Esther, a KLM crew member shares “6 Hotel Hacks from a Flight Attendant” — with one suggestion seeming quite random: put your shoe in your hotel room safe.

Useful tips for forgetful travellers

“Worried about forgetting something from your locker? Put your heel/shoe in it so you won’t forget it!” she wrote while showing herself putting a heel in her hotel room safe. This way, you can’t go without retrieving your shoe and your valuables alongside it.

Genius.

Among other tips, the flight attendant shared one of our favourites — using a hanger to clip your curtains closed to create total darkness. (Of course, this one only works with the hangers that have attached clips.) Next, Esther explained that if your international charger isn’t working, you can always take your phone’s USB plug and charge it via the hotel’s TV by plugging it into the back.

“What else is a shower cap useful for?” Esther continued in her video. “Use it as a cover over your shoes!” she added, placing the cap over her dirty shoes before putting them back in her luggage.

As for her final two tips, Esther said you can also use your shower cap as a makeshift protective barrier over the remote, which is a notoriously germy place in hotel rooms that rarely gets cleaned. And finally, Esther added, you don’t actually have to use your hotel room key to turn on the electricity. As she showed, you can use any card (think credit cards or ID) to keep the lights on no matter what.

Clearly, Esther’s tips resonated as the video has more than 48,000 likes and counting.

From trams to taxis: Hong Kong’s local transport options

Bus

Zip around the city with Hong Kong’s elaborate bus network. Five major companies operate in the city: KMB in Kowloon and the New Territories, Long Win Bus in the Tong Chung area, Citybus and NWFB in the area of Hong Kong Island, and New Lantau Bus on Lantau Island. These buses set off as early as 5 am and continue until midnight. Fret not, for there is a fleet of overnight buses — the N route — that run from 12 am to 6 am. If possible, hitch a double-decker to enjoy the delightful views from the upper deck. But of course, this is not the fastest mode of public transport in Hong Kong, owing to traffic and signals.

Hong Kong also gratifies with dedicated tourist buses — double-decker rides with an open upper floor that offers fleeting views of the city. In addition to the views, the background commentary in English will keep you informed and entertained. The first of the two tours offered by the tourist buses is the Day Tour, allowing you to choose between the Hong Kong Island Route, the Kowloon Route, and the Green Route, which includes Stanley Market and Aberdeen. The best part? The Day Tour packs a traditional boat ride in Aberdeen, a trip on the funicular railway to Victoria Peak, and a ride on the Star Ferry. The second option (no points for guessing) is the Night Tour. This is a 1 hour 45 minute ride around Kowloon, and it includes the Symphony of Lights show.

Ferry

Another fascinating way to get around the city while soaking up those harbour views is through the ferry. While there are 11 companies offering ferry services in Hong Kong, the most famous is Star Ferry. The two main routes connecting Hong Kong Island and Kowloon are Central to Tsim Sha Tsui, and Wan Chai to Tsim Sha Tsui. The ferry runs every 6-10 minutes, from 6.30 am to 11.30 pm. Ferries also travel from Hong Kong (Central Ferry Pier) to other islands like Lamma Island and Cheung Chau Island. Tram

Hong Kong’s oldest and most environment-friendly mode of transportation is its tram system. It exclusively employs double-decker trams, which promise a fun ride through bustling markets. Currently, there are 163 trams in Hong Kong that run from the west to east on Hong Kong Island, with 120 stops. Make sure to carry the exact change to pay the driver when you disembark.

Mass Transit Railway (MTR)

The easiest and most efficient way to get around the city is through the metro, also called the Mass Transit Railway (MTR). With a total of 12 operating lines, this metro system connects the entire region seamlessly. The Island Line (dark blue) runs throughout Hong Kong Island, from east to west. The Tsuen Wan Line (red) goes from Hong Kong to Kowloon, crossing the Victoria Harbour in between. It also connects the Island Line at Central and Admiralty while crossing tourist-friendly destinations like Mong Kok and Tsim Sha Tsui. Depending on the station, the trains run from as early as 5.50 am to 1 am. During peak season, the frequency of the metros is 2-4 mins, which increases to 4-6 minutes during the off-season.

Minibus

If you fancy a less crowded and cosier mode of public transport in Hong Kong, we recommend the Minibus. With just 16 seats, these buses come in two types: the Green Minibus (a scheduled service) and the Red Minibus (no specific route). However, unless you speak fluent Cantonese, we wouldn’t advise hopping onto the minibuses.

Taxi

Colour-coded, meter-abiding, and reasonably priced — what’s not to like about Hong Kong taxis? The Red Taxis with silver roofs operate in Kowloon and Hong Kong Island and go everywhere except Lantau. The Blue Taxis, on the other hand, run only in Lantau. Lastly, the Green taxis with silver roofs provide service in the New Territories, including remote islands, mountain villages, natural parks, and more. Bear in mind that if you’re in a New Territory but your destination is Hong Kong Island, you must take the Red Taxi. While some taxi drivers converse in English, others may only speak Cantonese. Hence, it’s advisable to have your destination penned down in Chinese.

Local transport in Hong Kong — Cost, routes & apps

Whether you choose the bus, taxi, metro, ferry, minibus or tram, modern tourists have ample options to get by in Hong Kong. While all the modes are extensively interconnected throughout the city, MTR is quicker, the ferry takes the cake for the most surreal views, and the tram promises a story-book experience. Simply put, pick your choice of transport based on the time cap, need, and number of people.

Cost-wise, the basic fare for the red taxi is 24 HKD, with an additional 1.70 HKD charged for every 200 metres travelled beyond the destination, or for every minute the driver has had to wait. You can easily book a taxi using apps like HKTaxi App, Uber and FlyTaxi. The tickets for the Star Ferry are also fairly cheap, at just 2.20 HKD for a general seat, and  3.70 HKD for a top-deck seat.

The fare for MTR rides depends solely on the distance travelled, with average costs ranging from 4.50 HKD to 14.40 HKD. The tickets for metro rides can be bought from the MTR stations, and are of two types — single tickets for one-way journey to the destination and 24-hour tickets for unlimited travel throughout the day, barring special services like the Airport Express. The 24-hour ticket can be purchased online in advance or from the MTR stations at a cost of 65 HKD.

Similarly, the bus rates also depend on the distance travelled and can range anywhere between 4.50 HKD and 47 HKD. It’s important to note that if you’re paying by cash, the fare must be paid with exact change. Book your seat on the bus easily using apps like Citymapper, Citybus, and Hong Kong Bus Route.

It is important to check the airline policy thoroughly before purchasing tickets, as airlines have specific requirements and restrictions for pet travel on their planes. Also, it is imperative to choose a container for your pet friend in which they can stand up and change sides comfortably.

Pet-friendly airlines in the world

Air India

The Indian carrier allows domestic passengers to carry small cats, dogs and birds inside the cabin or as cargo. On international flights, Air India also allows service dogs, which are required to assist the blind and deaf in the cabin. But before flying out, make sure the pet has valid health and rabies vaccination certificates, and please note that carrying pets is subject to the flight commander’s approval.

Other requirements for travelling with a pet on Air India are:

• A maximum of two pets are allowed in the cabin per flight. One can be in the last row of first or business class and another in the last row of economy class.
• The pet must be in a soft, ventilated bag or kennel not exceeding dimensions — 18 inches in length and width and 12 inches in height (45.72 cm x 45.72 cm x 30.48 cm).
• The maximum weight of the pet, with the container, allowed in the cabin is 5 kg.
• However, pets that weigh up to 32 kg, including the weight of the kennel/crate, are permitted as check-in baggage and beyond the limit, they will be booked as cargo.
• The minimum age for dogs and cats to travel is eight weeks.
• Pets that are pregnant are not allowed on the flight.

Japan Airlines

Allowing pets to be transported only as cargo, Japan Airlines permits dogs, cats, small birds (that eat seeds, fruit and insects), rabbits, ferrets, hamsters, marmots, squirrels and chinchillas to travel. The airline does not accept pregnant pets and bulldogs. After gathering the necessary documents for the pet travel, you can easily check-in your pet in four steps. These are:

Emirates

By filling in a form on the website a week prior to the departure, you can travel with your pet on Emirates SkyCargo. With temperature-controlled facilities, the pets have a separate transit area in Dubai. After examining all the details of your pet, including vaccination certificates, cage details and medical and veterinary reports, pets with a minimum age of 15 weeks are accepted as cargo.

The airline also offers a premium service known as Emirates PetPlus where the pets can be picked up from the city of origin and dropped off at the final destination. The service provider will also take care of the paperwork needed for the pet’s travel.

In the following four steps, passengers can check-in their pets.

Step 1: Make a request to book your pet by filling in the form available on the website.

Step 2: After the airline checks for space availability, you will be told the estimated price.

Step 3: Submit the following documents at least 72 hours before the flight date to get approval.

• Pictures of your pet in a natural standing position and inside its travel container.

Following three easy steps, you can fly your pet on Alaska Airlines. Begin by booking your passenger ticket, check the travel option that suits your pet and then contact the airlines to reserve space for your pet. The small pets that are permitted in the cabin are dogs, cats, rabbits and household birds, and they must remain in their carriers during the entire journey. In the baggage compartment, the pets that are allowed are cats, dogs, ferrets, guinea pigs, hamsters, household birds, non-poisonous reptiles, pot-bellied pigs, rabbits and tropical fish.

Below are some of the other rules the airline has.

• Two pets that have a similar size may travel in the same carrier. However, one should ensure that the pets are comfortable.

Travel with your furry friend on this American carrier, as it has no weight or breed limitations. Allowing just cats and dogs in the cabin, the aircraft urges passengers to always ensure that the pet stays in their carrier and can easily stand up and turn.

Each passenger may only bring in one pet and can travel only when there’s space available in the aircraft. In some states and countries, such as Australia, Hong Kong and many others with pet import regulations, United Airlines does not allow pets in the cabin while flying to, from or through them. You can check the list of such countries here. Also, the airline doesn’t have an option for pets travelling in cargo holds.

Other requirements to keep in mind before you book your tickets on United Airlines are:

The rules of the airline are as follows:

• The pet should stay in the kennel under the seat throughout the journey.

• Hard-sided kennel measurements for regional flights are: 16 x 12 x 8 inches (40 x 30 x 20 cm)

• The combined weight of the pet and the kennel should not exceed 9 kg for small cats and dogs.

• If you are travelling to the US from another country, then your pet must be 16 weeks old and 15 when travelling to the European Union.
• Only one pet is allowed per kennel, with the following exceptions:

  – There’s no limit on the number of animals in the litter.

Air Canada

Air Canada allows pets (dogs or cats) in the cabin and the baggage compartment. The airline also offers a cargo service so that your pet can travel alone with utmost comfort. To carry your pet in the cabin, one has to ensure the pet is small enough to be able to stand, turn around and lie down in its carrier under the seat in front. To make the arrangements for your pet, contact the airline within 24 hours of booking your ticket and request them to register your pet on the same flight.

In certain cases, the airline has restrictions on pet carriage. These circumstances include:

• When you are an unaccompanied minor.
• Are seated in an exit or bulkhead row.
• Require a medical device that needs to be put under the seat.
• Travelling in a Premium Economy cabin that isn’t safe for a pet carrier.

Air France

The airline accommodates most pets, but attack dogs such as pit bulls are completely prohibited in the cabin or cargo hold. However, specific breeds falling under Category 2 (cargo), as determined by the French government, are allowed to travel on Air France flights only with a pedigree document certifying their breed.

Pets weighing under 8 kg can accompany passengers in the cabin, while those weighing between 8 and 75 kg need to be transported in the cargo. It’s important to note that the request to transport pets must be sent to the airlines at least 48 hours prior to your travel. Below are some requirements for pets.

• Pets need to be vaccinated in order to be permitted on board.
• For any dog or cat to travel within the European Union, it should be identifiable with an electronic microchip. The pet should also have a European passport, along with a certificate provided and completed by an authorised veterinarian mentioning the pet’s identification details and certifying all vaccinations.
• It is important to contact the destination country’s embassy for any additional health requirement documents.
• For other countries, check current regulations for additional vaccination requirements.

Your pet can only travel by cargo under the following circumstances:

• If your pet is neither a cat nor a dog.
• All snub-nosed cats are of one of the following breeds: Boxer dogs, Pekingese, Shih Tzus and Persian or Birman cats.

Swiss International Airlines

The Swiss carrier welcomes all types of pets, even exotic species from the zoo. Pets weighing up to 8 kg are allowed in the cabin, while those exceeding the weight limit are permitted only as cargo.

By paying the transportation fee of USD 9.32 (HKD 72) on the domestic flight for pets weighing between 0-8 kg in the cabin and USD 14.91 (HKD 116) for pets weighing between 8-15 kg in the cargo hold, you can bring along your furry friends with ease. Ensure that you submit the reservation request a minimum of six hours before the flight departure. A passenger can carry a maximum of two pet carriers, with one of them being permissible in the cabin. Here are some important details to keep in mind:

Lufthansa Airlines

Just like other airlines, Lufthansa allows small pets that are less than 8 kg to be carried in the cabin, while heavier ones can be transported in the cargo hold. The German airline also requires passengers to fill in a form as an undertaking if their pet meets the criteria for onboard travel.

Restricting the transport of snub-nosed (brachycephalic) cats and dogs, bookings must be made 72 hours before the scheduled flight. Once the booking is confirmed, the transport fee needs to be paid during check-in. In cases where the request cannot be accommodated, the airline informs via email.

Consider the following rules before travelling with your pets:

• Passengers can carry a maximum of two animals.
• The two animals can be carried in the cabin (in an approved container), or one can be carried in the cabin and the other in the cargo hold.
• The animals should be 12 weeks old, and the ones travelling to or from Germany should be at least 15 weeks old to be able to travel.

Aeroflot

Permitting a maximum of three animals in one container on a flight, the Russian airline limits the weight of pets to 8 kg (with the carrier) in the cabin. The weight in the cargo hold cannot exceed 50 kg and should not hold more than one large animal or six birds.

Consider the following rules before flying your pet on Aeroflot:

• The airline does not allow the passengers to open the carrier and take out the animal in the cabin or restrooms.
• The size of the hard container should not exceed 44×30×26 cm, and the size of the soft container should not exceed 126 cm.
• Seats cannot be offered next to passengers with children or other passengers carrying animals unless members of the same family are carrying the animals. Additionally, the animal must be clean, healthy, harmless, odourless, non-pregnant and should not cause any inconvenience to fellow passengers. Other rules to keep in mind are:

• The pet must be attached to a chain or a chord to the leg and be securely fixed next to the handler to avoid flying in the cabin.
• Each passenger can carry a maximum of five falcons in the cabin — one falcon on the handler’s arm and two falcons per empty seat. Alternatively, the pet can be placed on a perch, which should be handled by the pet owner, and it should not block the pathways inside the aircraft in an emergency.
• There’s no limit to carrying baby falcons; however, each passenger can carry only two cages.
• The cage’s dimensions should be 48 cm X 58 cm X 70 cm.
