London is one of the most visited places on the planet. Each year, the English capital welcomes upwards of 30 million tourists. They are greeted by iconic sites, like Buckingham Palace and Westminster Abbey. They come to catch a show in the West End. And, more recently, they arrived to explore world-class dining and cocktail culture. But they don’t all appear in equal numbers across the year.

The Big Smoke is very much a seasonal destination. The high season typically takes off in early June and extends through the start of September. Late April through May, along with September into mid-October, are the shoulder seasons on either side. Late October through early April bookends the lull of the low season.

But you’re not bound by these trend lines. The reality is there’s no bad time to land in London. And the “best” time is entirely relative. It merely depends on what type of experience you’re eager to achieve. Let’s find out what — and when — that is, exactly. Below, we break it all down, so you can discover your very own best time to visit London.

  • High Season: Early June through early September
  • Shoulder Season: Late April through May; September to mid-October
  • Low Season: Late October through early April

The lion’s share of those 30 million annual visitors will touch down at some point during the summer months. You can’t blame them for being so predictable — London is consistently compelling throughout that time period, as grey skies and rain are rare. And the city’s 3,000 parks and green spaces are teeming with life.

“But the best time for me is spring,” according to Ross Corcoran, managing director of Lang Atholl, a bespoke tour company based in Scotland. “The weather is milder, the crowds are not as big, and hotel rates are not yet surging. It also allows you to get around the city with relative ease and use the Tube like a local rather than a tourist.”

Indeed, if you arrive in May, specifically, you might find you have the whole city to yourself. Although outdoor markets and street fairs are fully open, embracing the warming air, the international arrivals have yet to accumulate. Many native Londoners, meanwhile, step outside of town to take advantage of the multiple bank holiday weekends marking the month.

Best times to visit London for good weather

For good weather
Image Credit: Gautier Houba/Travel + Leisure

“June and July definitely have the best weather,” says Chris Perone, general manager at NoMad London. “Long days and warm evenings are perfect for strolling the city’s endless, meandering pavements.”

To his point, as the summer equinox approaches in mid-June, it starts getting light before 5 am and darkness doesn’t set in until well after 9 pm. With more than 16 hours of sun to play with, there’s ample opportunity to enjoy a lengthy morning walk alongside canals and greenery. Then, have a full English breakfast — or a legendary Sunday roast — before perusing the shops and restaurants of Mayfair.

You can even parade primary thoroughfares such as Regent Street, which shuts down to vehicular traffic this time of year. Or, take off toward the River Thames and check out the city’s newest observation deck, Lift 109, built into the chimney of the historic Battersea Power Station.

Then, return to green space in time for BST Hyde Park. The concert series, which runs nightly from the end of June through the beginning of July, carries with it world-class talent. Last year, headliners included Billy Joel, Pink, Lana Del Rey and Bruce Springsteen.

Best times to visit London for lower prices

London in winter
Image Credit: Stephanie Pollak Travel + Leisure

“August and January are undoubtedly when you can grab the best deals,” Perone confirms. “While August can be a bit hot, everything is open and the city just has this buzz with the pubs overflowing into the streets. January is dark and can be damp, but that’s when the fireside tipples are at their best.”

As it applies to the former, simply make sure you’re booking a hotel — like the NoMad — that has adequate air conditioning. Yes, August temperatures have been inching toward the 100-degree mark in recent years, but it’s never as muggy as, say, a New York summer. So, it’s worth contending with the climate in exchange for those precious reduced rates, which apply to everything from overnight stays to rental cars.

As for January, you’re looking at an average of 12 days worth of rain throughout the month, with temperatures sitting squarely in 40-degree territory. It’s not ideal, and yet, as a result, the indelible cosiness of British pub culture is dialled up to its maximal value. It’s a fantastic month to mingle with locals in Chelsea and Belgravia. Make your way past the terraced alabaster townhouses and amble into any number of legendary gastropubs, including The Harwood Arms, the only Michelin-starred pub in London. Or, enjoy new venues such as Bóha, which delivers on the promise of one of the most satisfying Sunday roasts in town. Just make sure to pack an umbrella and jumper.

Best times to visit for making spirits bright

Holiday season in the UK
Image Credit: Gautier Houba/Travel + Leisure

London is one of the most festive locales on earth come the holiday season. Ornately lit Christmas trees populate public squares, wreaths and red ribbons dress doorways, and a diverse array of themed markets set up shop from Clapham to Clapton.

There are too many memorable offerings to list them all, but if you’re staying in central London, Christmas by the River is one you won’t want to miss. It features more than 50 merchants alongside London Bridge City Pier, under the shadows of Tower Bridge. Leicester Square market is another optimal option. It’s one of the smaller ones in sheer size, but the level of festivity it extends is beyond measure. Most Christmas markets operate from the start of November through the first week of January.

If you’re looking for another sort of holiday spirit, book your trip during London Cocktail Week. What started in 2010 as an intimate showcase of the local drinks scene has ballooned into the world’s largest cocktail festival, underscoring this city’s standing as the international epicentre of cocktail culture. The confab includes some of the top names in mixology, who fan out across town to shake up all sorts of pop-ups, tastings, and speciality drink activations over a 10-day period in mid-October.

Worst times to visit London

“Contrary to popular belief, summer is the worst time to visit London,” says Corcoran. “If there’s hot weather, the underground is almost unbearable, and if you’re used to air conditioning, I would strongly recommend against it. You will feel stressed, rushed, hot, and flustered trying to get around the city with the warmer temperatures and stultifying foot traffic.”

You’ll also endure the highest airfare if booking your trip between June and July. If you’re determined to battle the crowds, however, consider taking a train out to the countryside for at least a few days during your stay. The inclusive beach town of Brighton to the south, or the bucolic countryside of the Cotswolds to the west are ideal, if not predictable, summertime retreats.

“July is a tough time in London,” adds Perone. “With so many events, hot weather, and lots of out-of-towners in general, London can feel a bit cramped and stuffy. “And the Tube network… it’s an oven.”

So-called “deep-Tube lines,” which include the most popular services, like Piccadilly, Central, Victoria, and Northern, are all free of air conditioning. Needless to say, it’s a challenging experience to be cramped among strangers in a 90-degree train car. But if you stick with the sub-surface network, the train cars are not only temperature-controlled, they’re also more spacious. Primary examples include the District, Circle, Hammersmith & City, and Metropolitan lines, as well as the Wi-Fi-equipped Elizabeth line.

Visiting Singapore? Here's Your Ultimate Guide To Lion City's Public Transportationhttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/hk/travel-tips/trip-planning/your-ultimate-guide-to-public-transportation-in-singapore/2023-11-07T00:00:48+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/hk/?p=40547a:1:{i:0;s:26:"public transport singapore";}

Whether it is sauntering through Gardens by the Bay, hopping onboard the Singapore Flyer (one of the world’s largest observation wheels), or shopping to your heart’s content at the city’s myriad malls — Singapore whips up a fairytale vacation for the modern traveller. And while there’s plenty to explore, the humble tourist is often dumbfounded by a new city’s seemingly complex transport system. Fret not, Singapore’s public transport lets you manoeuvre the city effortlessly and pocket its countless gems.

To zip around the city like a local, say yes to Singapore’s MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) trains or perhaps the local buses which are privy to some of the most picturesque views. If that doesn’t sail your boat, hail a taxi or rent a bicycle. No matter what mode of transport you fancy, Singapore promises gratifying pitstops and wholesome destinations.

Singapore’s local transport options

The Lion City’s thriving cultural fabric needs no introduction. Right from iconic hawker centres that serve lip-smacking regional delights to Universal Studios which ranks high on every adventure junkie’s bucket list, Singapore is brimming with experiences.

Luckily for us, getting from point (a) to (b) in the city is just as easy as it sounds. Here’s rounding up the various means of public transport in Singapore.

Trains

For starters, give the trusty MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) and LRT (Light Rapid Transit) trains a shot. The rail network is not just well-connected, but extremely time and cost-effective too.

Singapore public transport

A 150 km track connects about 90 essential stations, ensuring that no matter what your destination, you only have to walk a few steps from the station. Though these trains run every 2 to 5 minutes, avoid catching one during the peak rush hours i.e. 7 am to 9 am, and 5 pm to 7 pm.

[inline_related_article article_id="34313,35161"]

Buses

You can also mosey through the city and its wondrous attractions on a bus. Operating every 15 to 20 minutes, these buses are extremely well connected and easy on the pocket too. Additionally, they are air-conditioned and also have a ramp for wheelchair passengers. Now, if you’re determined to travel by bus, be on the lookout for the SBS Transit buses (they’re white and red in colour), and the SMRT buses (they are bright yellow in colour). They run from 5.20 am to 12.00 am and are extremely user-friendly! What’s more? Children can travel for free on buses if they’re under 0.9 m and accompanied by a fare-paying adult.

Post midnight, you might come across operators like NiteOwl and Night Rider — but, they are costlier owing to the extended operating hours.

Cabs

If you’re willing to splurge your moolah on comfort and extra leg space, we’d recommend hailing a taxi and whizzing past the bustling city while tuning into the local radio. Wondering how to book one? Just use the Dial-A-Cab hotline number which is 6342 5222 to connect to the cab operator.

In terms of cab booking apps, there is no Uber or Lyft in Singapore. However, local travellers swear by apps like Grab, ComfortDelGro, and Ryde.

Cable cars

Who said commuting can’t be fun? Resort to Singapore’s efficient cable car commute to travel while feasting on indulgent views of the lapping waves, lush greens, and futuristic cityscape. Run by the Cable Car Sky Network, these cable cars are sprinkled with old-world magic. This gondola lift consists of two independent lines: the first one — Mount Faber line — runs between Mount Faber and Sentosa stations, and the second one — the Sentosa line — runs between Siloso Point and Merlion stations. The first strip starts at 8.45 am and the last ticket is dished out at 9.15 pm.

In an exclusive offering, Singapore Cable Car announced special Poké Ball-themed cable cars that were introduced on May 01, 2023, and will continue till September 30, 2023. So, if you or your family are Pokémon lovers, this might be a good time to plan a trip to Singapore.

Singapore’s local transport — Cost, routes & apps

If you’re looking to travel on a train or bus, step numero uno will be to purchase a Singapore Tourist Pass (STP) from the SimplyGo Ticket Office at select MRT stations. Based on the pass you purchase, you can avail unlimited trips via these trains and buses for a period of one, two, or three days. The one-day pass costs SGD 22 (HKD 126), the two-day pass costs SGD 29 (HKD 166), and the three-day pass costs SGD 34 (HKD 195). Additionally, while purchasing these tourist passes, you need to deposit a refundable sum of SGD 10 (HKD 57).

You can opt for SG Tourist Pass — a special EZ-Link card that allows tourists unlimited travel on basic bus services, as well as MRT and LRT days. However, this pass can only be bought for a duration of 3 days and retails at SGD 29 (HKD 166), without the need for a prior deposit. You can also upgrade to Singapore Tourist Pass Plus to enjoy great savings while relishing the sights and sounds of the city — this costs SGD 48 (HKD 275) for 3 days, sans prior deposit.

Lastly, if you’re someone who likes tiny trinkets that envelop memories of a city, we’d recommend checking out the Singapore Tourist Pass Charm. Reminiscent of the Lion City, this big cat charm-cum-pass offers unlimited travel on Singapore’s basic bus services, as well as MRT and LRT trains. It is valid for one day and retails at SGD 36.90 (HKD 211).

To make your experience hassle-free, Singapore’s public transport app Moovit lets you enter the start and end destination and rustles up bus routes and railway lines in a jiffy. Here’s an example for easy reference. For instance, you want to go from Sentosa Merlion to Gardens by the Bay. Just enter the respective points and voila! You have the shortest suggested routes and recommended lines, along with walking and cycling paths. What’s not to like?

In a nutshell, Singapore’s public transport system is undeniably easy to get a hang of. If you’re travelling by bus or train, the Moovit app is your ally!

5 Travel Tips To Remember Before Booking Your Next Triphttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/hk/travel-tips/trip-planning/travel-tips-to-remember-before-booking-your-next-trip/2023-10-24T07:00:47+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/hk/?p=39062travel tips

So, you’re dreaming of your next vacation. As you finalise your plans and the excitement grows, consider these tips from Travel + Leisure’s expert A-List advisors.

Planning your next vacation? Here are five travel tips to remember

Pack strategically

“Always pack a day bag if you’re checking into a hotel early. With the huge demand for hotel stays at the moment, many properties can no longer accommodate early check-ins, but you are always welcome to use the facilities (go to the pool or hit the beach) while they store your big bags until your room is ready.” — Kemi Wells, Wells Luxury Travel

Go against the crowds

“Dare to go where others aren’t. Now that we’ve emerged from the pandemic, people are flocking back to old favourites and cities. Consider bucking the trend and going to less popular destinations to reap the rewards of fewer people, lower prices, and more authentic experiences.

In Mexico, demand has levelled off in traditional beach destinations (including Riviera Maya, Tulum, Puerto Vallarta, Punta de Mita, and Los Cabos), which means opportunities are arising for more reasonable rates. Or, take it one step further and head to more remote destinations like the peaceful town of Bacalar, the wellness-focused Costa Careyes, and beyond.” — Zachary Rabinor, Journey Mexico

Remember to pause in the moment once you’re there

“Sometimes, you need to find a good spot, take a seat and a glass of wine, and just watch what’s happening around you. Travel with curiosity and attention to details and people.” — Tova Wald, Tova Wald Boutique Travel & Events

Make plans well in advance

“My biggest tip is to book early and always purchase travel insurance. Doing this means you can usually score the best options at the best prices, and by insuring your trip, you take a lot of the stress out of travel. Before working in travel, I never purchased insurance, but now I see the importance of it every day. Flight cancellations and delays are more and more common these days, but when your trip is insured (and you’ve worked with a great travel advisor), you can breathe easier knowing those issues can be worked through — and you won’t be losing thousands of dollars when they arise!” — Erin Correia, Adventure Life

Be smart about ticket prices

“For flights, use Skyscanner or Google Flight alerts so you don’t overpay on air.” — Kendra Thornton, Royal Travel

Travel With Your Fur Buddies On These Pet-Friendly Airlineshttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/hk/travel-tips/trip-planning/best-pet-friendly-airlines-for-dogs-cats-birds-2/2023-09-25T05:00:28+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/hk/?p=35838Pet friendly airlines

Planning a trip and worrying about leaving the fur baby behind is an overwhelming thought for most pet parents. Luckily, many airlines now allow travellers to fly with their pets. With just a little bit of extra paperwork and an additional cost, pets can be transported from one country to another. So, the next time you are planning to travel with your dog, cat or bird, below are some pet-friendly airlines that you should consider for a stress-free journey.

It is important to check the airline policy thoroughly before purchasing tickets, as airlines have specific requirements and restrictions for pet travel on their planes. Also, it is imperative to choose a container for your pet friend in which they can stand up and change sides comfortably.

The Indian carrier allows domestic passengers to carry small cats, dogs and birds inside the cabin or as cargo. On international flights, Air India also allows service dogs, which are required to assist the blind and deaf in the cabin. But before flying out, make sure the pet has valid health and rabies vaccination certificates, and please note that carrying pets is subject to the flight commander’s approval.

Other requirements for travelling with a pet on Air India are:

  • A maximum of two pets are allowed in the cabin per flight. One can be in the last row of first or business class and another in the last row of economy class.
  • The pet must be in a soft, ventilated bag or kennel not exceeding dimensions — 18 inches in length and width and 12 inches in height (45.72 cm x 45.72 cm x 30.48 cm).
  • The maximum weight of the pet, with the container, allowed in the cabin is 5 kg.
  • However, pets that weigh up to 32 kg, including the weight of the kennel/crate, are permitted as check-in baggage and beyond the limit, they will be booked as cargo.
  • The minimum age for dogs and cats to travel is eight weeks.
  • Pets that are pregnant are not allowed on the flight.

Fee: Depending on the pet’s weight, carrier and food, the pet will be charged under the excess baggage fee, even if the passenger doesn’t have any other baggage.

This Airline Is Debuting Lie-Flat Beds in Economy and Restaurant-Style Dining in Businesshttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/hk/news/journeys-air-new-zealand-new-cabins-with-bunkbeds-restaurant-style-dining/2023-09-20T12:29:01+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/hk/?p=35564Air New Zealand

Maybe you’ve heard about the Air New Zealand bunkbeds coming to economy next year, but what about their rejiggered business class featuring restaurant-style dining, renewable dishes and cutlery to cut weight and save waste, and a sleep ritual and free-flow snack pantries for everyone? We visited the Air New Zealand top secret research lab and are here to tell you what to expect on their awesome new cabins launching next year.

#journeys

WE’VE ALL BEEN THERE.

As sleep (that elusive creature) finally, finally creeps up on you during a long flight, your neighbour’s overhead reading light snaps on like a stadium light, obliterating all hope of sweet slumber. It’s just one of air travel’s inescapable little irritations, like weirdly flat pillows, having the passenger in front fully recline their seat at mealtime, or having to repeatedly rewind your movie because you accidentally yanked out your headphone jack for the 17th time. Why can’t things be better, you ask yourself.

Air New Zealand

Well, Air New Zealand heard you. As part of a top-secret project spanning the last five years, it has quietly accrued precious intel by inviting some 300 passengers into its innovation lab, gathering their honest feedback over 2,571 hours of customer research. The results were unveiled last year in its research lab Hangar 22, which contains a full-sized cross-section of its 787 aircraft (spanning all its cabins) and is located in an Auckland commercial precinct so unprepossessing most employees weren’t even aware of its existence.

“I think people are really looking for their own personal space,” says Leanne Geraghty, chief customer and sales officer at Air New Zealand, describing how air travellers have become more exacting post-covid. “They’re also combining both business and leisure travel, taking longer vacations and blending the two. Travellers now are also much more conscious of the sustainability elements of travel.”

Air New Zealand Bunkbeds
Passenger sleeping in Business Premier

To this end, Air New Zealand has introduced a slew of innovations that will debut on its new Dreamliners arriving in 2024. These include a new Business Premier Luxe suite, a new Business Premier seat and the world’s first Skynests—sleeping berths for Economy passengers.

The new Skynest: Business-class beds for economy travellers

Skynest
Skynest

“Ultra-long-haul economy travel really is an act of endurance,” says Louise Leaupepe, senior aircraft programmes specialist at Air New Zealand. (The airline defines a long-haul flight as one in the air for six to 12 hours, and anything beyond as an ultra-long-haul flight. Its Auckland to JFK flight, for example, is about 16.5 hours, the fourth-longest flight in the world.) Compounding this is the fact that the first night away from home, according to the airline’s research, is the hardest to get a good night’s sleep.

In response, Air NZ has overhauled its economy cabin design and offering, the most exciting of which is no doubt its new Skynest concept, which CEO Greg Foran aptly describes as “a real game changer for the economy travel experience.”

These are six lie-flat sleeping pods, or beds (configured in two columns of three bunks each) located at the back of the new Economy cabin on ultra-long-haul flights. Each pod holds one person, and features a curtain that can be pulled closed for privacy.

Skynest
Skynest

According to Kerry Reeves, head of aircraft programmes at Air New Zealand, each pod is about 80 inches (two metres) in length, with a shoulder width of about 23 inches (58 centimetres). Included are a full-sized pillow, sheets and blanket, along with ear plugs and lighting designed for rest. Other features include a separate reading light, personal device USB outlet, and ventilation outlet. T+L tip: those with accessibility issues might find the middle bunks easiest to get into, while bottom bunks – which are partially occluded by a jutting stairwell – offer the most privacy.

Passengers in the new cabins can book a Skynest in blocks of four hours, as Air New Zealand research indicates this allows you to enjoy a few mood and memory-enhancing REM cycles. But as Reeves notes, even passengers who didn’t fall asleep during Skynest trials reported enjoying “the separation from the rest of the cabin” as well as “the ability to stretch out horizontally for those four hours.”

While pod pricing and booking processes are still being determined, the airline says that each passenger will be limited to one session, so that no one person can “hoard” consecutive Skynest sessions if there is demand from others.

Comfort and sleep innovations

Skycouch
Economy Skycouch

Even if you don’t make it into the Skynest, things are about to get a lot more comfortable from the Economy cabin and on up.

Economy seats will be enhanced with more storage, comfort and space, while Economy Stretch allows for more legroom than regular Economy seats. Here, it’s also worth mentioning Economy Skycouch, an already-existing Air NZ innovation that allows passengers to convert a row of three seats into a flat surface with a mattress on top. This accommodates up to three passengers and is ideal for a couple, or a parent with small children.

The new Premium Economy seat offers more privacy, allowing passengers to recline without intruding into the space of the person behind.

Economy Skycouch

Business class, too, will be transformed, doing away with the current herringbone layout. The new Business Premier seats are 20.5 inches (52 centimetres) wide and can be turned into 80.25 inch (204 centimetre) lie-flat beds. Business passengers can now incline their back and headrest separately, allowing for a more comfortable lounging position. Seats in this section won’t have doors but offer privacy shields. Those travelling together in the middle row can open their shields, creating a “shared bubble” in the cabin.

The new Business Premier Luxe suites, however, are truly a upscale innovation, offering everything Business Premier does and more, such as a fully closing door and space for two to dine face-to-face, “restaurant-style.”

Air New Zealand
Sleep Ritual – BP (widebody services)

All airline passengers will also receive a new Sleep Ritual, comprising a small tray of calming items like chamomile tea, a hot towel, passionflower sleep balm and sleep-inducing snacks like dark chocolate and nuts. Combine this with Zentertainment, meditative onscreen content of slow-moving scenes across New Zealand and sounds of nature, and zzzs are pretty much guaranteed.

And thank you, Air New Zealand, for giving us the freedom to snack — in Premium Economy and Economy cabins, there are new Sky Pantries (separate from the galley) stocked with snacks and drinks available at all times.

Tech upgrades

Passenger using IFE
Passenger using IFE

Movies are an important distraction on long flights, and the new Economy seats will have a 50 percent bigger screen. All inflight entertainment (IFE) in the new Air New Zealand cabins will allow you to pair your device as a remote control and to connect to Bluetooth audio, allowing for a wire-free experience. Also included: universal power outlets and new wireless charging area. And double-screeners rejoice—IFEs will also offer a new “split-screen” option, so you can watch a movie and monitor your plane’s flight at the same time.

Happily, overhead reading lights are no more, at least in Business class. Instead, there are now five separate lights plus a reading light that passengers can adjust to their satisfaction. Economy-class lights will also be more bespoke and not as intrusive, according to Reeves.

A more sustainably minded flight

Let’s face it: no flight can be considered eco-friendly, but there are ways to alleviate the damage, so to speak.

As part of its mission to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050, the airline has debuted new serviceware which will reduce environmental impact. In Premium cabins, the new serviceware is 20% lighter, reducing up to 76 kilograms of weight from each flight. In Economy, the new serviceware (made from renewable sugarcane remnants) will eliminate some 28 million single-use plastic dishes and cutlery every year.

Air New Zealand

Leather has been replaced with lighter, “modern fabrics,” saving about 1 kilogram in weight per Business Premier and Premium Economy seat. Also new: soft, durable and warm modacrylic blankets, which will replace polar fleece versions, said to shed significant amounts of plastic fibres into the environment with every wash. All of which makes for a truly feel-good flight. Yet Leaupepe had one more incentive to share.

The pillows in the Air New Zealand new cabins will, according to her, be plumper, too. Sign us up.

The Japan Rail Pass Is Getting More Expensive, but These 4 Places Are Worth the Extra Milehttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/hk/destinations/journeys-jr-japan-rail-pass-price-best-train-trip-destinations/2023-09-18T09:00:00+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/hk/?p=35429JR Pass

While the price is almost doubling, the JR Pass is still worth it if you want to travel farther and deeper into Japan by ever-romantic rail. We break it down, and suggest four of the best destinations to, ahem, train your sights on across Japan.

#journeys

JAPAN HAS ALWAYS BEEN a train-loving country even before conscious travelers started touting the superiority of rail travel. It’s hard not to fall in love with the Japanese train system—it’s notoriously efficient, exceptionally clean and has an extremely well connected network despite having different companies operating various lines.

When I left Japan in 2011, I knew I was going to miss train travel but there’s an upside of not living in Japan anymore: I become eligible for the Japan Rail Pass. The JR Pass is train pass at a specially discounted price that can be used for unlimited travel across the six companies of the JR Group, including the famous shinkansen (bullet trains). It’s only offered to foreign visitors, and must be purchased before your trip or as soon as you arrive in the country. There are two types to choose from—a green pass (first class) or an ordinary pass—and different durations: 7 days, 14 days and 21 days. Hands down, traveling by train is the best way to see Japan, so the JR Pass is incredibly great value for money if you’re planning to visit several places. Enjoying the scenery while tucking into a delicious eki-ben? Pretty hard to beat.

Do the simple math and you’d realize that the JR Pass was worth it even if you only took a return trip from Tokyo to Hiroshima, which normally cost ¥38,000. A 7-day ordinary pass was priced at ¥29,650 and therefore covered the cost of that route and came with other perks such as free travel on all JR trains (even on Tokyo’s Yamanote line and monorails), free access to night trains (handy if you were saving up on a hotel night and want to sleep to en route), as well as up to a 30% discount on JR hotels. If it sounded too good to be true, well, we should acknowledge the fact that the JR Pass could not be used on the Nozomi or Mizuho trains—the fastest bullet train services on the Tokaido/Sanyo shinkansen and the Sanyo/Kyushu shinkansen respectively—but essentially there were a lot of pluses including being able to reserve a seat in advance.

After years of being a major steal, however, the JR Group is introducing a roughly 70% price increase from October 2023. For example, the new price of the 7-day ordinary JR Pass is ¥50,000 (from ¥29,650) and the 7-day green pass is up to ¥70,000 (from ¥39,600). But there’s always a silver lining: this pass allows holders to travel on the Nozomi and Mizuho trains with a supplement, plus there are additional benefits offered by JR’s partner companies. So take this as your sign to get one and go beyond the usual circuit. Here are a few of the best destinations in Japan to explore to make the most of your JR Pass.

Kanazawa

If you’re doing the most popular and probably best-known train route of Tokyo – Kyoto – Osaka, you might as well squeeze in a trip to Kanazawa, one of the loveliest destinations on the west coast of Honshu. Kanazawa is on the map because of the Kenrokuen Garden—known as Japan’s most beautiful garden—as well as its well-preserved geisha and samurai culture that earned it a nickname of “Little Kyoto.” It’s more than that, though: As a UNESCO Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art, Kanazawa is home to myriad artisans and notably produces almost all of Japan’s domestic gold leaf.

Izu Peninsula

When there’s a long weekend, many Tokyoites decamp to Izu Peninsula. Its proximity to the capital sometimes means travelers overlook it but there’s plenty to see in this area blanketed by forested peaks and hugged by stunning beaches. From the jagged geological marvel of Jogasaki Coast to the historic Shimoda, where Commodore Perry sailed his black ships (kurofune) in 1854, Izu gives you a taste of the slow life while being just an hour or two away from buzzing Tokyo.

Beppu

Can you really say you’ve traveled to Japan if you haven’t been to an onsen? For those who truly love the mineral-rich waters, a trip all the way to Kyushu’s Beppu is one not to miss. Get ready for a record-breaking dip: There are eight different hot springs that make up this stunning onsen town and aside from the standard pools, one can also experience sand baths and mud baths. Whilst in Beppu, take a jaunt to nearby Yufuin, another hot spring spot that’s equal parts traditional and trendy.

Shirakami Sanchi

Japan has 25 UNESCO World Heritage Sites including the golden temple Kinkakuji in Kyoto and the unique farmhouses with gassho-zukuri roofs in Shirakawa-go. One of the lesser-trod destinations is the Shirakami Sanchi, which spans Aomori and Akita in the Tohoku region. This is the last frontier: it’s home to 100 square kilometers of virgin Siebold’s beech forests that once covered most of the country. It’s a fantastic place for forest bathing and for enjoying koyo (changing colors of leaves) in autumn.

Is This Airline Making Reservations in Tokyo’s Best Restaurants Unnecessary?https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/hk/travel-tips/trip-planning/journeys-japan-airlines-michelin-inflight-meals-first-business-class/2023-09-14T12:20:54+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/hk/?p=34924Japan Airlines Michelin

Gone are the days of upturned noses at plane food. The world’s best airlines are falling over themselves to recruit famous chefs to create their in-flight meals, and the results are truly delicious. We visited Japan Airlines to learn about the Michelin-star chefs curating their first- and business-class meals, and some of these dishes sound just insane at 38,000 feet. Abalone, anyone?

#journeys

IT’S SAID THAT JAPAN has more Michelin stars per capita than any other country on Earth. With a record-setting 200 stars in Tokyo alone, it should come as no surprise that the country’s premier airline is serving Michelin-crafted meals as it soars around the globe.

First Class, JAL
Japan Airlines first-class seat

Japan Airlines has partnered with six Michelin-star chefs, four of whom have three stars each, to interpret their food into in-flight dining menus for first- and business-class passengers. So, while airline food has long left upturned noses and rumbling stomachs, Japan Airlines aims to do the opposite.

The various multi-course tasting menus available on JAL BEDD Sky Auberge dining service are divided into Japanese and Western options, serving 140 high-flying first-class passengers per day and hundreds more in business class. In true Japanese culinary fashion, each Michelin-themed menu changes seasonally to guarantee the produce is at its freshest.

Sliced wagyu beef and steamed sea urchin topped with sudachi citrus gelée and caviar is the signature JAL dish of chefs Ishikawa Hideki and Koizumi Kouji of Ishikawa Kagurazaka and Restaurant Kohaku in Tokyo. With six stars between them, the two teamed up to create an ultra-luxurious menu for first-class passengers flying from Tokyo to various North American and European cities, including New York and Paris.

Passengers flying first-class on the same routes from Tokyo don’t have to kick themselves about not scoring a coveted seat at the three Michelin-star Quintessence in Tokyo; they can try the restaurant’s most famous plate onboard. Chef Kishida Shuzo’s beloved Goat Milk Bavarois focuses on the ingredients. Made with fresh goat milk, salt from Guérande, France and EXV olive oil from Lazio, Italy, it’s served alongside lily roots and macadamia slices to add a bit of crunch.

But ensuring the world’s finest ingredients translate well when prepared in a tiny Japan Airlines galley kitchen while battling temperature controls and food safety regulations was sometimes harder for the chefs than impressing Michelin.

In regards to making sure the food wasn’t served lukewarm, Shuzo told JAL cabin attendants, “I thought of different ways to use the in-flight heating equipment, and I also made changes to how the meals were loaded and to cabin crew procedures. I realized that the cabin crew have so many different tasks on board and are very busy, so I felt it was crucial to simplify the plating process to keep an optimized serving pace.”

[gallery ids="135983,135991,135992"]

For chef Jun Mishina of the Michelin starred Ren Mishina in Tokyo, creating correct and appealing tastes for his airline meals was key and flavors are different at altitude. “I shifted towards the concept of addition of flavors in the hopes that passengers could enjoy something new onboard,” Mishina told JAL cabin attendants.

Then there’s the very nature of service to contend with: no matter how luxurious your seat in the front of the plane, it’s still in a plane. “One of the biggest differences between in-flight and restaurants is that at restaurants, we can serve each dish one at a time, whereas in-flight, the appetizers are all served in one plate divided into five grids,” Mishina said. “So, I ask cabin crews to offer passengers to try my signature dish, ‘abalone,’ with jelly on the top, to start with and thereafter move on to the other dishes for the best experience.”

Abalone simmered in kelp and sake and then soaked for an entire day in a broth is Mishina’s signature dish onboard JAL business-class flights from Tokyo to major cities around the world. And frequent fliers can try “The Curry,” a fruit and spice-heavy curry from Ren Mishina’s secret menu.

Paired with these plates are rare and limited-production sake, wine and teas like the Queen of Blue Tea, made from hand-picked Taiwanese leaves served cold and poured into a wine glass.

Designed by Japan Airlines’ resident Wine Advisor, Motohiro Okoshi, the sommelier at An Di in Tokyo, the first and business-class wine program may be worth the cost of the ticket alone. Of its selection, a spokesperson for Japan Airlines said, “The lineup ranges from high-quality breweries that sake and shochu lovers drool over, to famous breweries that everyone knows, rare breweries that are hard to find and young breweries that are leading the trend.”

The app offers spontaneous, same-night reservations at properties across The Standard’s portfolio, including New York’s The Standard, High Line and The Standard, East Village; The Standard Spa, Miami Beach; The Standard, London; The Standard, Ibiza; Thailand’s The Standard, Hua Hin and The Standard, Bangkok Mahanakhon; and The Standard, Maldives, with more unique destinations to be added to the app as The Standard brand grows.

The brand’s loyal fans have been lobbying to bring the pioneering app back, and The Standard’s execs were listening and waiting until the moment was right.

“Guests are not only enthusiastically returning to travel, but are dropping inhibitions and allowing themselves to live spontaneously once again,” said Standard International CEO Amber Asher.

“It feels great to bring One Night Standard back for all those who missed it during the past few years and lobbied for its return. It is particularly gratifying because we have added some stunning new locations like Ibiza and Bangkok that are just perfect for impromptu late-night fun.”

The Standard was named sixth on Travel + Leisure’s list of readers’ 25 favourite hotel brands in the 2023 World’s Best Awards. Always a brand defying convention, The Standard already has plans to link its One Night Standard app with pioneering dating app Feeld, created for open-minded users seeking unique connections.
