India is a massive country, home to more than 1 billion people. Complex, intricate, overwhelming, and beautiful, there are many reasons to visit the South Asia destination, and many things to consider before booking a fabulous trip.

“India is not only about forts, palaces, and temples; it’s about five-star deluxe properties, delicious food, and the human experience,” says Marion Miller, an India travel specialist with Micato Safaris and a Travel + Leisure A-List Advisor.

That said, Miller also wants travellers to know that there are better — and worse — times to arrive. “India is not a year-round destination,” she says. “Within the timeframe that you travel to India, there are also optimal times; it just depends on where you want to go.” Read on to learn about the best times to visit India, and which stretches of the year to avoid.

Best times to visit India for smaller crowds

With such a tremendous number of residents, plus nearly 20 million tourists per year, you simply have to expect crowds in India year-round. That said, there are times of day when crowds may be smaller.

“When you see [monuments like] the Taj Mahal, visit in the morning. Then it is very calm,” says Miller. “We usually go very early in the morning, around 5:30 am, so that we are the first in line. Then it is less crowded and you can get those famous photos. There are crowds [in India]; you can’t really get away from that.”

Best times to visit India for good weather

Determining the best weather is dependent on where in India you want to visit. The country is the seventh largest in the world in terms of landmass, so the weather can be dramatically different from one part to another.

“Northern India has its seasons, just like Europe and the US,” says Miller. “I love October because temperatures are lovely; it’s between 75 (23.8 degrees Celsius) and 85 degrees (29.4 degrees Celsius), with a slight nip in the air, something that says fall is coming.”

November is the same as October, except temperatures dip a little bit more, between 70 (21.1 degrees Celsius) and 80 degrees (26.6 degrees Celsius). In the northern part of India, you may even need a light jacket by December. Miller says February and March are lovely, too, as spring begins and the flowers start to bloom.

“The south is tropical,” she said. “The coastline, like Chennai, Goa, and Bangalore, will have more humid temperatures, and there is not much difference in temperature there during the year.”

Best times to visit India for lower prices

Between mid-April and mid-September, India has its monsoon season, and temperatures soar up to nearly 110 degrees (43.3 degrees Celsius). If you are looking for travel deals, this would be the time, but it’s also one of the least favourable stretches during which to visit; the extreme heat and torrential rains often deter travellers.

Best times to visit India to see Tigers

A caveat to the above: monsoon season is one of the best times to visit India if you want to spot the country’s majestic resident tigers.

“Tigers are very elusive creatures,” says Miller. “They are beautiful animals, and they are easily seen when it is hot because they are hunting for water. I had an avid photographer visit in April last year and he saw 26 tigers.”

Best times to visit India for festivals

best times to visit India

When it comes to festivals in India, there is never a wrong time, as the country always has a reason to celebrate. Two of the largest festivals in India are Diwali and Holi. The holidays run on a lunar calendar, so the dates change every year, but Diwali is typically in the winter and Holi is typically in the spring.

“Diwali is the Festival of Light,” says Miller. “It’s a lot of lights, people give each other gifts, and it’s also a time where they shoot lots of fireworks into the sky.”

Holi is the festival that welcomes spring. It is a festival of colours, where anyone and everyone throws colourful dye at each other, filling the air, their clothing, faces, and hair with bright, springtime hues.

“There is also Dussehra [usually in October], which is the festival of good prevailing over evil,” Miller says. “Another festival called Raksha Bandhan [usually in August] celebrates the connection between siblings. Plus there are so many gods and goddesses, and they are all being celebrated.”

Worst times to visit India

As to be expected, the worst time to visit India is also the best time to get deals, but you have to consider if those deals are worth the extreme weather. Between April and September, temperatures are extraordinarily high, and monsoons make travelling quite difficult.

Mizoram, located between the international boundary (along Myanmar and Bangladesh) and the “Inner Line” of India, is home to a primarily tribal population. Gujarat's 'Garba' Dances Its Way Into UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritagehttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/in/destinations/india/garba-from-gujarat-in-unesco-intangible-cultural-heritage-list/2023-12-07T06:30:40+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/in/?p=237697Garba of Gujarat

The traditional dance form of Gujarat, Garba, earned a spot on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List on December 6, 2023. This inclusion aligns with the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, marking Garba as the 15th cultural element from India to receive this prestigious recognition. West Bengal’s Durga Puja was previously added to the list in 2021.

UNESCO, in its statement, announced, “Today, the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage inscribed ‘Garba of Gujarat’ on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity during its 18th session, taking place in Kasane, Botswana from 5 to 9 December 2023.”

Beyond dance: Decoding the cultural significance of Garba

UNESCO described Garba, the folk dance of Gujarat, as a devotional and ritualistic art performed throughout the state and the rest of India. The dance is a prominent feature during Navratri, an annual nine-day festival dedicated to the Goddess Mother and the primordial feminine energy.

Garba dancers, dressed in vibrant traditional attire, begin the dance slowly, moving in a circle around an image or sculpture of the goddess, singing and clapping their hands. The dance gradually increases in tempo, with participants moving and clapping faster towards the end. Despite being rooted in Gujarati heritage, Garba attracts enthusiastic participants almost all over the country.

The official statement issued by UNESCO added, ‘“Garba of Gujarat is the 15th ICH element from India to join this list. This inscription underscores Garba’s pivotal role as a unifying force that fosters social and gender inclusivity. Garba, as a dance form, is entrenched deeply in ritualistic and devotional roots, involving people from all walks of life and it continues to thrive as a vibrant living tradition, bringing communities together.”

All You Need To Know About Kannauj, The Perfume Capital Of Indiahttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/in/destinations/india/kannauj-everything-to-know-about-the-perfume-capital-of-india/2023-12-05T08:30:03+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/in/?p=236448Kannauj Perfume

Have you ever wished to capture the musky or woody fragrance wafting through dense forests? Or longed to capture the scent of damp soil after rains, eloquently termed as petrichor? Different fragrances evoke diverse memories, and you can seamlessly include these in your life by heading to Kannauj, the land of perfumes in Uttar Pradesh.

Popularly called ‘The Perfume Capital Of India’, Kannauj has a rich history dating back to the Bronze Age. Known for its art and craft, the city is one of the very few places in India producing attar or itr without the use of any artificial substances. Let’s embark on a fragrant journey through the lanes of Kannauj.

Fragrant chronicles: Kannauj’s rise as the ‘Perfume Capital of India’

Kannauj gained prominence during the Gupta Period (between the fourth and sixth centuries) and later served as the imperial capital during Emperor Harsha’s reign around the seventh century. The art of perfume making, specifically attar, dates back to the Mughal era. Legend has it that Jahangir’s wife, Noor Jahan, mesmerised by the scent of roses from Kannauj, experienced during her bath in Agra, played a pivotal role in the genesis of attar.

For 400 years, Kannauj has been the torch-bearer of perfume craftsmanship in India, owing much to its favourable climate and soil. These natural elements provide an ideal environment for growing the herbs and flowers essential in crafting this aromatic wonder enclosed in glass vials, often called ‘liquid gold’.

Decoding the artistry of perfume-making in Kannauj

Perfume being made in Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh

Perfume-making is a delicate art in Kannauj, where skilled artisans, known as sazh, employ the age-old traditional distillation process called deg-bhapka. In this intricate method, large pots called deg are filled with flower petals and water, sealed with a specific clay mixture, and covered with lids. These pots are connected to vessels with long necks called bhapka.

As the deg sits in a furnace, the bhapka, containing a base essential oil – preferably sandalwood oil – sits in a cooling chamber with water. The oil absorbs the fragrance of the condensed vapour from the deg through a bamboo nozzle or pipe. Despite its seemingly simple description, this process is both challenging and time-consuming, giving attar or oudh its due importance.

Aromatic alchemy: The perfumers shaping Kannauj’s ‘liquid gold’

Kannauj is home to numerous centuries-old perfume manufacturers, each passing down the art of creating attar through generations. One of the most sought-after fragrances is the ‘mitti’ attar, capturing the essence of petrichor. Another favourite is Shamama, a type of attar with strong woody notes and remarkable longevity. Its popularity stems from the unique and intriguing fragrance that teases the olfactory senses.

Located in Siem Reap, Cambodia, Angkor Wat is a temple complex spread over 402 acres. Originally conceived as a Hindu-Buddhist religious structure, it was commissioned by Suryavarman II of the Khmer Empire in the 12th century with an initial dedication to Lord Vishnu. However, towards the end of the century, the temple complex transformed into a Buddhist Temple. Despite this shift, people continue to offer incense and fruits to the Hindu deities. Recognised by the Guinness World Records as the largest religious structure in the world, the construction of Angkor Wat spanned 28 years. The temple complex comprises a 5-km-long moat, intricately carved walls, and numerous towers and galleries.

The Golden Temple, also known as Harmandir Sahib, stands as one of the most unique temples in the world, revered as one of the holiest sites in Sikhism. Originally constructed between 1581 to 1589, the temple endured destruction by invading forces and underwent multiple reconstructions by reigning kings. In 1809, Maharaja Ranjit Singh finally rebuilt it using copper and marble, crowning the sanctum’s top with 24-karat gold leaf. Today, the temple is gilded with more than 750 kgs of gold. Remarkably, the main temple is surrounded by the sacred Amrit Sarovar pond. Devotees cleanse themselves by washing their hands and feet here before entering the temple, seeking spiritual purification.

Pura Tanah Lot, Indonesia

Pura Tanah Lot in Bali, Indonesia, is famed for its unique temple design. Perched on a massive rock just off the seashore, the temple’s roots can be traced back to the 16th century, when Dang Hyang Nirartha, a Hindu traveller and Shaivite religious figure, visited the site. Originally dedicated to Balinese sea gods, including Bhatara Segara, it later became a shrine to its creator. One of the most unique features is that this temple is accessible only during low tide; the pathway to the mainland is submerged during high tide, earning it the moniker ‘the temple floating over the sea’.

Wat Rong Khun, Thailand

Known as the White Temple, Wat Rong Khun in Chiang Rai, Thailand, offers stunning vistas. The outer facade, entirely white, is adorned with small fragments of mirrors that create a stunning sight when illuminated by sunlight. Completed in 1997, the temple complex features a short symbolic bridge representing the abandonment of greed, desire, and temptation. Hundreds of disembodied hands seem to reach out towards the bridge, symbolising the pull of devotees. Other notable structures include the ‘Gate of Heaven’, the golden building, and murals depicting Western idols such as Superman, Michael Jackson, and Harry Potter. Unique, indeed!

One of the most unique temples in the world, the Karni Mata Mandir in Bikaner, Rajasthan, is also known as Madh Deshnoke. This temple stands out for considering rats as holy, earning it the nickname ‘Temple of Rats’. Devoted to Karni or Charanai Mata, the temple is home to mice known as kābā, believed never to leave the temple walls. Devotees and priests make offerings of huge vats of milk and gigantic ‘ladoos’ to the rats to please the goddess. The temple was constructed around 1530 CE as a small structure, which has undergone additions over the years.

One of the most unique churches in the world, the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, is probably best known for being unfinished. Despite construction beginning in 1882, it remains the largest unfinished catholic church in the world. The project faced several hiccups, such as the Spanish Civil War, funding issues, challenges with the city council, additions to the original design, and COVID-19. Initially designed by Antoni Gaudi, who is buried in the church, other architects later took over. There is still no completion date, but that hasn’t slowed the steady flow of tourists to Barcelona.

While not officially recognised as a cathedral in Catholicism due to the absence of a bishop, this underground church is built 600 feet underground in a halite or rock salt mountain. Originating around 1954, the church was constructed in a space previously carved out by miners for their daily prayers. Dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary, the patron saint of miners, the church has undergone renovations and now rests within a bigger complex, Salt Park.

What makes it unique are the nine domes shaped to resemble rising flames, gaily coloured in bright shades. Each dome initially represented a different chapel.
