Across the globe, Christmas is synonymous with sky-high Balsam Fir trees flaunting their festive baubles, a mountain of gifts ready to delight, freshly baked gingerbread, and greeting Father Christmas. However, for a Christmas celebration that puts a spin on traditional customs, turn to Japan. Primarily a Shinto and Buddhist country, Japan has minimal religious ties to the festival. With some customs borrowed from the West, and some brewed within the country, Christmas in Japan promises a unique spin on the candy cane festival: one that is laced with gigantic winter illuminations, snow-kissed landscapes, J-Pop Christmas music, and the traditional Japanese Christmas cake (kurisumasu keki).

Celebrations with a twist: Popular Christmas traditions in Japan

In Japan, the traditional stuffed turkey, masked potatoes, and cranberry sauce are replaced by sumptuous fried chicken. Conceived in the 1970s, the popular slogan ‘Kentucky for Christmas’ and the widely sold ‘party buckets’ have continued to captivate the masses. Every year, almost 3.6 million Japanese families head to Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) to get their meals. Owing to the high demand, some locals even place orders for the Special Christmas Menu as long as six weeks in advance!

Next, people in Japan swear by their kurisumasu keki, a Christmas cake sold on almost every street corner during the holiday season. This sponge cake filled with whipped cream and topped with strawberries is deemed a sign of prosperity, reflecting Japan’s rise from the ruins of World War II. Additionally, the country revels in hyperbolic illuminations smearing malls, restaurants, and public spaces. Lastly, Japan’s numerous theme parks, including Tokyo Disney Resort and Osaka Universal Studios Japan, transform into winter wonderlands.

Snowball the festive fun at Hokkaido, a literal winter wonderland. Explore the 43rd Sapporo White Illumination (November 22, 2023, to March 14, 2024), featuring scintillating illuminations, Christmas food, and ornaments. Witness unmatched ski landscapes by checking into Sapporo Teine or Sapporo Kokusai Ski Resort. Savour the Hokkaido-special Asahikawa Ramen and Donburi or try ice fishing at the frozen Barato River.

Head to the Shiroi Koibito Park to enjoy the magic of Christmas with your family. Shiroi Koibito, a popular cookie brand, pioneers this chocolate-and-sweets-themed park, which becomes merrier during the holiday season. For a romantic celebration with your beloved, head to the storybook town of Otaru, where the whimsical drizzle of snow, Sakaimachi shopping street, and heartwarming Christmas decorations throughout the township make it an amorous haven.

Shirakawago — Winter Light-Up Festival 2023

Tip-toe over Shirakawago’s fleecy blanket of snow for a dreamy Christmas. The quaint village is home to Gassho-zukuri (hands in prayer) style farmhouses, which get covered in layers of snow during the white season. The locals elevate this beautiful scenery by organising illumination events on select Sunday evenings in January and February, painting an otherworldly landscape (picture snow-kissed farmhouses, revelling in the warm glow of candles). Check out the illumination calendar for 2024 here.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Shirakawago region of Japan is festooned with souvenir shops, shrines, cafes, and guesthouses where visitors can stay. If you fancy a meal at a traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouse restaurant, dine at Irori. Also sample Japanese street food dishes like Hida gyu korokke (or Japanese Croquette), gohei mochi, and smokey sausage.

The Dutch-themed amusement park, Huis Ten Bosch (House in the Forest), is among Japan’s best-themed parks to visit during Christmas. Be it seasonal illuminations, horse-drawn carriages, Japan’s first three-story merry-go-round towing 15 metres into the sky, or the Christmas version of Kingdom of Lights featuring 13 million balls of lights, this park is sure to impress. Visitors can also opt for a cruise around Nagasaki Bay, sprinkled with islands and iconic landmarks.

Sai Ying Pun Guide: The Best Places To Eat, Drink, And Explore In This HK Districthttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/in/destinations/asia/sai-ying-pun-neighbourhood-guide-best-places-to-eat-drink-and-explore/2023-11-30T10:30:03+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/in/?p=234955sai ying pun

Sai Ying Pun often gets overlooked by its trendy neighbour, Sheung Wan. We argue that if you want a quieter corner with a vibrant atmosphere, Sai Ying Pun is the place to be. With its trendy cafes, beautiful murals, and slower pace, Sai Ying Pun is a must-visit for locals and tourists alike. Read our neighbourhood guide to Sai Ying Pun to find where the best places to eat, drink, and shop are!

With the opening of the Island Line extension in 2015, Sai Ying Pun became more accessible. And with that, welcomed more visitors. This allowed it to develop further from an old neighbourhood to a sprawling hub that blends nostalgic charms with modern flair. Sai Ying Pun is a place for foodies and art lovers with many cafes and bookstores. While it doesn’t have a reputation for being a shopper’s paradise, you’ll appreciate its own unique aspects. Need a refresher on what you can enjoy here? We got you covered.

Bookmark this neighbourhood guide to Sai Ying Pun for your next (or first) visit!

Your ultimate guide to exploring Sai Ying Pun

Where to eat

When it comes to food, the easiest way is to head over to Second Street, Third Street, and High Street. And from there, take your pick from the numerous rows of restaurants and cafes. But if you really need specific recommendations… then, keep reading.

Fancy a pizza? We absolutely love the neighbourhood vibe of Pizzeria Italia and the tons (and we mean tons!) of pizza flavours available. Right across this beloved pizza place is Uncle Padak, perfect for some good old Korean fried chicken. Make sure to order that with beer! Ah, the ultimate Korean comfort food, right?

If you love pasta, we highly recommend LucAle. They also serve amazing brunch. And further on to Italian food, Casa Cucina & Bar has a Cicchetti-inspired menu that your tastebuds will thank you for. When it comes to lunch and brunch, you can’t go wrong with Catch. Think fresh seafood and a delicious soft shell crab burger, served in Australian style. And another Australian eatery not to miss is G’Day Cafe.  Laidback atsmohphere, brekkie options, and limit Aussie barbecue—yum!

To enjoy some Spanish delights, head to La Paloma. The tapas and paella are top-notch. Of course, Sai Ying Pun also has plenty of restaurants serving local food. Top of our list is Kwan Kee and their delicious clay pot rice! But they have a range of dai pai dong classics to enjoy too! If you want to try underrated cuisines, look no further than Dara. The chic restaurant serves up not only amazing Filipino food but also Filipino-inspired cocktails. Brut! also recently welcomed a new chef hailing from the Philippines, so you can expect Filipino-inspired flavours from the menu.

Need an extra kick of spices in your food? We totally love Pondi and its fusion of Indian home cooking with French culinary techniques. Pondi also has an al fresco dining area that’s perfect when the weather is great. We also encourage you to hit up Aziza for its delicious homemade Egyptian cuisine. Finally, don’t let your pup miss out on all the good food at Moojoo. The pet-friendly cafe is filled with animal motifs, making it the perfect spot for your pup. Snack on Western delights ranging from pasta and salad to rice options.

[inline_related_article article_id="234415,232260"]

Where to drink

If you loved the food at Pondi, then head over to its sister venue next door, Shop B. In addition to its elevated dai pai dong dishes and Cantonese classics, the drinks menu here is solid. While you have classics like Blue Girl beer, we love the cocktails that were inspired by a nostalgic childhood like Vitasoy and Ribena. La Paloma’s El Bar also serves up some really great drinks with a retro-looking design.

For hardcore booze lovers, there’s Ping Pong 129 Gintoneria. This stylish speakeasy has over 40 gins from around the world! We also emphasise stylish because the Spanish gin bar used to be a ping pong hall. With its upgraded design, it’s not surprising that it’s often used as a location for filming. Adventurous drinkers will love Mostly Harmless. Why? It’s a menu-less cocktail bar helmed by the famous Ezra Star! The cocktail bar boasts an ever-changing set of cocktails depending on seasonal availability. So, with every visit, you’re bound to discover and try something new!

For no-fuss drinks, you can’t go wrong with Junels Restobar. Not only do they serve up classic Filipino dishes and booze but the karaoke system here is no joke. It’s open to everyone! So, belt out some tunes while drinking with your friends.

Other than bars, Sai Ying Pun also has its fair share of artisanal cafes and coffee shops. The famed Halfway Coffee also has an outpost in the neighbourhood. Already a household name for coffeeholic, you will love the array of coffee and tea available. In addition to the Hong Kong-style interiors and adorable porcelain cups! Those who love wine and coffee can visit Detour. When here, make sure to sample their handcrafted coffee made from speciality roasted beans.

Another option is Noc Coffee Co., which is also a well-loved brand for coffee lovers. You might have to wait a little during the peak hours but the coffee and snacks here are worth it. We also love Coffee by Zion and its charming vibe. Grab a cuppa and their homemade cheesecake!

Where to shop

Sai Ying Pun is not exactly a shopping destination. But that said, it’s home to a few sustainable and green stores. Live Zero is the city’s first zero-waste grocery store. Shop here for eco-friendly and plastic-free products in addition to organic food and ingredients.

For sustainable clothing, browse through Green Ladies. They sell high-quality secondhand womenswear! Not only do we encourage you to shop but also to sign up for consignment because once the item is sold, you can get a maximum of 30 per cent of the selling price. Take a trip down memory lane and shop at Vintage 1900’s. Here, you’ll find vintage watches, bags, and jewellery for both men and women.

And for some lifestyle and home shopping, Thorn & Burrow offers great home decor and accessories. Whether you need a simple notebook or a colourful rug, you can find it there. For book lovers, don’t miss out on Books & Co. (Coffee Book). We’re not really sure how to categorise this place since it’s a bookshop-cum-cafe. But given its wider range of books, it’s a book-shopping paradise to us. Similarly, Artzbrew is a cafe and gallery that combines food and coffee with art.

What to do

Besides the dining options, you can say that Sai Ying Pun is a pretty quiet neighbourhood. Its most famous attraction is probably Art Lane. Get your cameras ready and appreciate the colourful murals and artwork around. Sure, it’s the perfect backdrop for any photo but is also amazing for times when you need a dose of artistic inspiration.

For some peace and quiet, Sun Yat Sen Park is the place to be. You can stroll, jog, or have a picnic alongside the scenic waterfront view. The park is also home to a swimming pool, football pitch, and basketball court.

British Vibes, Macau Magic: Exploring The Londoner Macao With Actor Pooja Hegdehttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/in/destinations/exploring-the-londoner-macao-with-actor-pooja-hegde/2023-11-19T04:30:28+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/in/?p=233687Pooja Hegde Macao

At The Londoner Macao, pan-India star Pooja Hegde dives head-first into authentic British experiences like hopping on a double-decker bus, getting a selfie with Big Ben, and watching the Palace of Westminster bedecked in enchanting hues.

“Navy blue looks good on him,” says Sandra West, David Beckham’s mom in his docu series on Netflix. And this accounts for the colour palette in the David Beckham suite at The Londoner Macao, the location for our cover shoot with pan-India actor Pooja Hegde. The clean, clutter-free, and elegant interiors remind one of Beckham rattling on in his documentary about how he likes to clean his space right after a party when everyone’s in bed as he likes to wake up in a home that’s in perfect order.

pooja hegde macau
The pan-India actor caught candid in the navy blue-themed Suites by David Beckham. (On her: Outfit, Pankaj and Nidhi; price on request.)

As the crew prepared for the first shot, our cover star Hegde, a popular name in both Bollywood and the southern film industry wandered off to explore the space that has “all the home comforts he (Beckham) enjoys when travelling.” There are family portraits of the Beckhams—a photo of Victoria behind the camera shot by the couple’s son Brooklyn finds pride of place in the living area and a black-and-white photo of young Beckham is mounted on the wall of the private bar. To me, it felt like the family home of the Beckhams and could almost imagine David popping out of the bar and offering a drink.

The gold detailing on the walls, the DB monogrammed cushions, pillows, and bathrobes, and the number 8 pattern seared on iron fixtures on the sliding doors opening to the ensuite bathroom have been designed by London’s David Collins Studio with suggestions from Beckham. This suite is a part of the 14 Beckham suites that occupy the top two floors of The Londoner Hotel. These suites, however, are available only by invitation and not everyone can sign up to stay here.

A Piece of London in Macao with Pooja Hegde

Macau, the Las ‘Vegas of Asia’, has a UK-themed integrated resort called The Londoner Macao at Sands Resorts Macao of which Beckham is the global brand ambassador. The facade guests see on arrival at The Londoner Macao is a realistic interpretation of the Palace of Westminster, also known as Houses of Parliament. Famous London landmarks have been reproduced with great attention to detail, like the life-size replica of Big Ben that chime on the hour and a glass-canopied porte cochere modelled after the one at London’s Victoria Station. Right in the middle of the Crystal Palace atrium is a full-scale Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain with Anteros, the Greek god of selfless love, perched on top and statues of Henry VIII and Elizabeth strategically placed at different corners.

Big Ben in Macau
The actor poses in front of the Big Ben at The Londoner Macao. (On her: Outfit, Pankaj and Nidhi; jewellery, Swarovski; shoes, A&S; all prices on request.)

For our next shot, we chose Elizabeth Tower, popularly known as Big Ben, as the backdrop. Hegde fondly recounted moments from her recent family holiday in London, where she had to jostle for space to take a photo with her parents in front of Big Ben. “Here you can get a nice picture (of Big Ben) without the crowd,” she added with a smile.

A few minutes away from the clock tower, we found the iconic red double-decker bus. The original 1966 London bus has a small driver’s compartment and an open platform at the back, which particularly caught the fancy of Hegde. She joyously stepped on and off the platform as we got yet another perfect shot.

The Londoner Macao that opened gates in 2021 but officially launched in May this year, completes the Europe-themed triptych by Sands Resorts Macao, following The Venetian Macao’s 2007 debut and The Parisian Macao’s unveiling in 2016. Situated at the heart of the Cotai Strip, The Londoner Macao initially began as the Sands Cotai Central in April 2012. Later, Las Vegas Sands decided to spruce up the property with a London theme. The revamping started in 2019, and the property reopened to the public in 2021.

Today, there are five global hotel brands in The Londoner Macao— The Londoner Hotel, an all-suite luxury hotel with approximately 600 suites; Londoner Court with 368 super-premium multi-bay suites from one to four bedrooms; the 659-room Conrad Macao; the 400-room The St. Regis Macao; and Sheraton Grand Macao, which, at 4,001 rooms, is the largest Sheraton in the world.

Entertainment Galore

The Londoner Macao

The best part about being at The Londoner Macao is that it’s a self-encompassing retreat with plenty of diversions to keep the entire family occupied.

As our cover star took a break in between shots, I used the time to take a ride on the Black Cab Escape—an adventure inside an iconic London taxi with Beckham’s hologram for company. At the beginning of the trip, Beckham turns back and says ‘Ni Hao’, the Mandarin for “hi there” and this is followed by the Spice Girl’s famous Wannabe number as the driver navigates through brightly lit London streets.

Next up on my list was the It’s Tea Time installation that features giant tea cups adorned with typical British symbols like crown jewels, famous landmarks, and Shakespeare. It was an Alice in Wonderland moment. Ladies dressed in tea party clothes with flowing hats and gowns hover around the installation posing for pictures with eager guests.

If you are travelling with kids, the Magical Alley at The Londoner Macao is a fantastical place with a Harry Potter vibe. The curiosity shop, for instance, has an intriguing mix of antiquities, oddities, paintings, and photographs that come alive. But it was the Gallery window with its classic portraits that completely took me by surprise. As I was looking at the still-life portrait, suddenly the lady in it moved and glanced at the gentlemen in the nearby painting and clapped. Baffled, I looked around to see all the paintings interacting with each other.

Retail therapy

Nostalgic explorers and active shoppers both have a reason to visit The Shoppes at Londoner. With over 150 stores, the shopping mall inspired from London’s Oxford Street, offers a mix of chic boutiques you would find at Bond Street, Mayfair or Savile Row, and quaint stores nestled in the bylanes of Soho and Covent Garden. Distinctive details like a Victorian-era elevator and replicas of the Greater London Blue plaques with names of famous people in British history alongside urban stores justifiably capture the essence of London—a complex knot of old and new.

Culinary Extravaganza

The Mews
The Mews is a Thai restaurant with a ‘secret’ door. (Photo Courtesy: The Londoner Macao)

Few resorts have such a concentration of dining options—grand restaurants with big reputations and extravagant food—as The Londoner Macao. Dining here is an adventure. The place offers an eclectic range of British, Asian, and international dining, from British-inspired restaurants to celebrity chef dining outlets, you will find it all.

We took a lunch break along with Hegde at North Palace, a restaurant offering traditional Shandong, Beijing, and Inner Mongolia cuisine from northern China, prepared by chefs from that region. Inspired by classic Chinese mansions, the decor had traditional Chinese art and patterns. The chef served a wide array of delicious dishes for the crew. These dishes were as much a treat for the eyes as they were for rumbling tummies. Our cover star ardently clicked photos of the dishes for the ‘gram.

Pooja Hegde in Macau / Macao
Pooja Hegde looks like a piece of art against the backdrop of the wall paintings at The Huaiyang Garden restaurant. (On her: Gown, Stada Couture; jewellery, Joolry by Karishma; shoes, Stylist’s own; all prices on request.)

Post lunch, the crew moved to The Huaiyang Garden for the next shot. The food at the restaurant is curated by Master Chef Zhou Xiaoyan, renowned as ‘The Godfather of Huaiyang Cuisine’. The pretty interiors are modelled after ancient Chinese gardens, the walls are spattered with beautiful nature paintings and the muted lighting immediately puts you at ease and lets you savour authentic Huaiyang delicacies. Hegde looked like a piece of art as she got clicked with the wall of the restaurant as a backdrop.

Some of the other notable restaurants at The Londoner Macao are The Churchill’s Table, a British-themed eatery designed like classic Victorian food halls; The Mews, a Thai restaurant with a ‘secret’ door leading to the dining area; and Gordon Ramsay Pub & Grill, the celebrity British chef’s gastropub that serves an array of draught beers, cocktails, and classic British cuisine. In addition to the signature restaurants, The Londoner Macao offers other renowned restaurants like Chiado and The Conservatory.

The Bar of The Residence
Pooja Hegde lounges in The Bar of The Residence at The Londoner Macao. (On her: Suit, Alina Anwar; jewellery, Joolry by Karishma; shoes, A&S; all prices on request.)

For the final shot of the day, we moved to The Bar at The Residence, a British-style exclusive club for The Londoner Hotel guests. The Residence offers guests a peek into the sophisticated and luxurious London lifestyle. The Bar, which includes a billiard room, balcony, and outdoor terrace is inspired by the famous British wartime Prime Minister Winston Churchill. A column, near the door leading to the balcony is festooned with Churchill’s quotes and it made me stop as I caught the reading on the wall (literally), ““out of intense complexities, intense simplicities emerge.”

By the time we wrapped up the shoot, it was almost time for the Londoner Light and Sound Spectacular—a grand spectacle in which The Londoner Macao’s 16,000-square-metre (400-metre-long and 40-metrehigh) facade is lit up in entrancing hues, accompanied by some of the most recognisable British-themed music. The Londoner Macao succeeds in creating a distinctive British experience and as Pooja Hegde sums it up, “It (The Londoner Macao) is all in one; if you want to just relax and see London in its glory without having too many tourists around, this is the right place.”

Looking for an alternative to hiking? Why not explore Hong Kong on two wheels? Not only do you get a faster and easier way to see the city but you also get rewarded with natural beauty. So whether you’re a complete beginner or an advanced rider, there are plenty of trails to pedal your way through. See our own picks of the best cycling routes in Hong Kong.

Cycling around the city is a great way to stay fit and active but it’s also an excuse to appreciate nature. Those unfamiliar with Hong Kong might think it’s not a bike-friendly city because of how densely packed and populated it is. While it’s true that cycling as a way to commute is still far from ideal, there are a lot of trails and paths to take. Most of them are located in the New Territories, rewarding riders with natural views but there are also those that are available in downtown Hong Kong. There are also options in the middle of the city and even on islands like Cheung Chau. From picturesque views to seaside rides, you’ll find one to your liking. Here are the best cycling routes that Hong Kong has to offer.

The best cycling routes in Hong Kong for a scenic ride

1. Tai Mei Tuk

A post shared by Nemocca (@nemocca_)

A list of best cycling routes is not complete without a mention of Tai Mei Tuk. It’s not surprising that this route is among the most popular in Hong Kong given that it’s suited for all levels. Not only is it accessible but it’s also a scenic ride. But it being so popular means that it can also be crowded so we recommend taking your bike out on the weekend. The leisurely ride takes you through the Hong Kong Science Park, Pak Shek Kok Promenade, and Tolo cycling track. In total, the entire route from Tai Mei to Sha Tin (or vice versa) takes about three hours.

Level: Beginner

Distance: About 22 kilommetres

2. Tung Chung to Sunny Bay

A post shared by @travelogue_ll

This route is another popular choice for beginners and families, not only because it’s leisurely but its proximity to the airport comes with a perk. Riders can watch aeroplanes land or take off in addition to witnessing the beautiful sunset if the weather permits. Besides, the route ends at Inspiration Lake, which is the perfect stop for a picnic, some food, and more great views.

Level: Beginner

Distance: About 15 kilometres

3. Mui Wo

A post shared by @zhizaifupin

What’s great about cycling in Mui Wo are the many options that it gives you. You can choose to stop before the paths become more challenging or choose to take up the test on how far you can go. Those looking to stretch out their stamina will love the road full of inclines but beginners should probably watch out. If you pedal towards Tai Po, you’ll eventually reach the Big Buddha and from here, you can choose how you want to go about it. The views are great but because of the inclines, make sure to ride out when the weather is good.

Level: Intermediate to advanced

Distance: About 7 to 45 kilometres

4. Cheung Chau

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Mwmmm (@_weimin_)

Cheung Chau is another scenic cycling route. Plus, it’s a great excuse to visit the idyllic island for some food. Pedalling at Cheung Chau is easy, the only challenge is the narrow roads, especially between houses. It can also get busy during the weekends. After all, it’s an island! But that said, we still think it offers some of the most quaint, seaside views you can hope for. It’s also a great choice if you’re just really fresh off the bat because the route goes for less than two kilometres. And in fact, Cheung Chau is where I learned how to cycle!

Level: Beginner

Distance: About 1.5 kilometres

5. Discovery Bay

Discovery Bay is the place to be if you’re hungry for photogenic views. Just think of sunny beaches and fresh air… with added dining options. The cycling route only takes about an hour and you’ll get to see Discovery Bay’s landmarks like the country club and the plaza near the beach. Any of the beachside restaurants serve as great pitstops for pre or post-cycling. To avoid the crowds, take the route from the pier to Auberge. Not only is it much shorter, but it’s also quieter and with open flat roads.

Level: Beginner

Distance: About 1 kilometre

6. Fo Tan to Wu Kai Sha

A post shared by Angus Ng (@gooseflicks)

If you choose to start pedalling from Fo Tan, you can either take the route to Sheung Shui or Wu Kai Sha. We prefer the latter even if it overlaps a bit with another bike route. Along the way, you’ll be treated to majestic views of the Tolo Harbour and Shing Mun River. Then, the route also passes by the Ma On Shan neighbourhood until you reach the Wu Kai Sha Pier. If the seven-kilometre ride isn’t enough, you can push ahead to Double Starfish Bay and see the wildlife—crabs and starfish!

Level: Beginner to intermediate

Distance: About 7 kilometres

7. Yuen Long to Nam Sang Wai

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Roxanne Kubiak (@roxannekubiak)

From Yuen Long, it’s either the route to Nam Sang Wai or Tuen Mun. The latter is mostly used by commuting residents and is in fact, one of the oldest in Hong Kong. But because the lane is narrow, Nam Sang Wai is a win in our books. Besides, it’s also suitable for beginners, families, and even children. The ride is a whole world away from the towering skyscrapers and instead, you cross fish ponds, lush greenery, flourishing wetland wildlife, and beautiful pathways. Along the way, you’ll also encounter ancestral halls and villages which offer a totally different glimpse of Hong Kong’s concrete jungle. Oh, you also get to ride Hong Kong’s only river-crossing ferry—how cool is that?

Level: Beginner to intermediate

Distance: About 7 kilometres

8. New Territories Cycle Track Network

This one’s for the hardcore cyclists and enthusiasts. After all, you’ll be going on a six-hour cycling adventure! This monster of a track is fairly new and the goal is to link up all the cycling tracks across New Territories. In total, it stretches to a whopping 60 kilometres. But what’s great about this despite the fact that it can be challenging, is the access you’ll get to picturesque views both on land and near the ocean. While its duration is no measly task, the path is definitely well-paved and clear so cyclists really itching for a ride can try this. Besides, it’s not a must to finish the entire section as you also just take the Tuen Mun to Ma On Shan section or the Tsuen Wan to Tuen Mun section. Extra good news: an additional 22 kilometres will be added… soon. Load up on sunscreen as the majority of the trail has no shade.

Level: All levels—very much depends on your stamina and endurance

Distance: 60 kilometres

9. West Kowloon Art Park

This very leisurely track is perfect for the ‘gram’. With its well-paved and flat trails, West Kowloon Art Park is really for the fresh crop of riders who don’t want to venture too far out in the wild. Riders are gifted with a panoramic, front-seat view of Hong Kong’s skyline. Be warned though, it can get extremely crowded on the weekend so much so that rental bicycles might be sold out.

Level: Beginner

Distance: About 1 kilometre

10. Chi Ma Wan

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by sesame leung (@sesame365)

Now, for the most advanced riders, this route is for you. To be more specific, a normal bike won’t do here, you need a mountain bike to get you through the Mui Wo to Cha Ma Wan route. It’s certainly a challenge because not only will you pedal through rough trails, but you will also have to carry your bike in sections that are just not rideable. But all that aside, you get stunning views of the ocean and surrounding mountains. We highly recommend bringing enough water and food as the route is also quite remote.

Level: Advanced

Distance: About 9 kilometres

Kennedy Town Guide: Best Places To Eat, Drink, And Explore In The Buzzy Hong Kong 'Hoodhttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/in/destinations/asia/kennedy-town-neighbourhood-guide-best-places-to-eat-drink-and-explore/2023-11-02T04:30:50+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/in/?p=230067kennedy town

Once upon a time, Kennedy Town used to be a super hole-in-the-wall neighbourhood. Today, it’s a vibrant place that boasts plenty of dining options, a bustling waterfront, and an irresistible laidback charm. Read our neighbourhood guide to Hong Kong’s Kennedy Town to find all the best eats, drinks, shops, and things to do.

On the far end of the west side lies Kennedy Town (KTown). It was named after Arthur Edward Kennedy, the seventh Governor of Hong Kong. For a while, the neighbourhood was not on many people’s radar… until it got an MTR station and opened to more visitors, tourists, and locals alike. Today, the once far-flung hood on Hong Kong Island is packed with dozens of dining options. On the quieter side than Wan Chai and Causeway Bay and more affordable than Central, KTown has certainly become cooler than it once was. The popular Instagram Pier made KTown a hot spot and while it has closed down, the neighbourhood has made it to the hearts of many.

It’s true that KTown has developed throughout the years, but you’d still be able to see remnants of the past—just look at the mom-and-pop shops alongside slick restaurants and staggering luxury buildings. Getting the best of both worlds makes this hood a prime location for living—and visiting. So, read our picks of the best places to eat, drink, and shop and what to do in Kennedy Town.

Your ultimate guide to exploring Kennedy Town, one of Hong Kong’s coolest neighbourhoods

Where to eat

First things first, Kennedy Town has plenty of options when it comes to Italian food, particularly pizza. Just look at Pizzeria Italia and its long list of flavours. By that, we mean over thirty for you to choose from including the size of your crust! If by any chance, nothing tickles your fancy over there, we also recommend neighbourhood favourite (and not just KTown by the way), Dough Bros. The sourdough pizzas are great, as well as their doughnuts.

If you’re still looking for something more… out of the box, then maybe head to Alvy’s. They serve up unique pizza flavours, for instance, Bak Gwei which has char siu and geung yong. Still, you can’t go wrong with the classics there. Bresola also offers decadent Italian dishes from pizza to pasta, and risotto.

Got enough of pizza? Why not wash it all down with some good ol’ dim sum? Sun Hing Restaurant is the perfect place to be. In fact, it opens on the brink of dawn at 3 am until 4 pm so you can already get an early head start. Good morning indeed! While there’s much to love, we definitely recommend the juicy siu mai.

On the topic of local food, don’t miss Sheung Hei Claypot Rice. Yes, we recommend it but don’t just take our word for it because this restaurant is also Michelin-approved! Take your pick among the 30 different kinds of claypot rice. Make sure to leave some room for Yuan is Here, a Bib Gourmand-certified Street food spot. Chow down Taiwanese classics such as sweet plum fried potato and braised minced pork on rice (aka lo ru fan).

If you’re not exactly sure what type of dish you’d like, you can always go to a cooked food centre and KTown has its own. At Smithfield Market and Cooked Food Centre, one of the most popular options is 雞煲, a famed spot for spicy chicken hot pot. For something lighter, the congee from Cheuk Kee Congee is easy on the tastebuds. Other diverse cuisines to try include the Egyptian and Mediterranean food at Aziza, the Nepali delights at Timur, or the ever-popular tacos at 11 Westside.

Where to drink

Good and bad news for drinkers (be it coffee or booze), Kennedy Town has a lot on the table, but the exhaustive list also leaves you with a tough choice to make. That is, of course, if you’re willing to go back for another round of drinks, which we highly recommend. For coffeeholics, there are quite a few barista-made artisanal choices to choose from. Little Cove Espresso is certainly a favourite. In addition to its selection of coffee beans from Brazil, Ethiopia, and more, it also boasts a nice seaside view.

& Arabica is another cafe with a cult following. I mean, the stylish yet minimalistic interiors sure draw eyes. But the espresso brews entice even more caffeine lovers. We also love the lattes here in case you’re not a fan of cappuccino. For a place that offers both coffee and coffee-infused cocktails, the answer is Winston’s Coffee. What a haven for coffee and booze lovers, right?

kennedy town hong kong bar guide missy ho's cocktails

Now for those just loyal to booze, Missy Ho’s is the place to be. In addition to its quirky decor and Asian fusion dishes, the cocktails are just as creative. For instance, they give a Japanese spin on classics like… Bloody Ho’s. For Single offers single-malt whiskies (and single-origin coffees) and everybody is welcome! Don’t let its name fool you that this is just for all the singles out there.

Of course, you can’t miss out on Grain, a collaboration between Gweilo craft brewery and Wolly Pig restaurant group. The result? A gastropub with an extensive and exclusive offering of craft beers and brews. For something a little quieter, maybe even intimate, head to The Wilshire. The not-so-hidden speakeasy has a range of cocktails, some of which are available upon request.

Where to shop

With so many dining options, you might think that’s all there is to Kennedy Town. Surprise! There are also a few places for your retail fix, whether it’s food (again?) or home products. Slowood offers both, on top of being super eco-friendly. By that, we mean, it earned a reputation in the city for being a pioneer of eco-friendly shopping. So, expect to see sustainable products and products ranging from skincare to cleaning supplies. And in true eco-friendly fashion, any purchase doesn’t come with plastic packaging so make sure to BYOB.

Now, to spice your cooking up a little… or maybe a notch, we recommend Spice Box Organics. The grocery store is inspired by herbal remedies and Ayurvedic traditions from India. As such, they have spices and vitamins that are great additions to your cooking and health. Even better, the KTown branch has a cafe that offers healthy dishes.

Shing Fat Coconut & Spices is a true legend when it comes to herbs and spices. While its relocation to KT has only been open since 2017 (compared to its history stretching back to the 1950s), you can expect the same assortment and quality of products.

What to do

You can be sad about the Instagram Pier closing down. But trust us, there are plenty of other things to do in the neighbourhood. For one, KTown is home to a lot of… water. Or should we say, bodies of water? Start off with the photogenic Sai Wan Swimming Shed. A worthy replacement, or alternative, to the Instagram Pier.

Sai Wan Swimming Shed (Image credit: @s_tall_hk_jp/Instagram)

Then, there’s the Belcher Bay Promenade. It’s the perfect place to admire the sea view, take your furry friends for a walk, kids out in the playground, or just go for a nice stroll. Looking for a dip? Kennedy Town Swimming Pool ranks among the best public pools in Hong Kong (they don’t always have a good reputation). It overlooks Victoria Harbour and boasts both indoor and outdoor pools as well as a jacuzzi.

Not a fan of the water? Time to go exploring then! See the ruins of the Mount Davis Fort, a former British military depot built in 1911. It suffered from bombing during the Battle of Hong Kong and remnants of what once was are still visible today, although slowly succumbing to nature. To get there, you have to hike a little. But it’s a rather leisurely hike for beginners.

The neighbourhood also has several historic buildings that are worth a visit. This includes Lo Pan Temple, a Grade I historic building. KTown also has something for cinephiles: Golden Scene Cinema. This independent 283-seater cinema is among the best in the city. So much so that many film lovers are willing to go all the way to KTown to catch a film (or event) here. After all, the cinema does screen some films exclusively. But you can still enjoy international releases in addition to arthouse flicks and local movies. It’s certainly a good way to support the local film industry.

Hong Kong Dog Rescue (Image credit: @hkdr_official/Instagram)

After watching a movie, why not bring your friends (or family) to Wheat and Wood? The cafe has classic board games for everyone to enjoy. Otherwise, channel your cooking skills at FoodCraft. Simply join a workshop that matches your cooking level. All the recipes are healthy and it’s a great way to meet other chefs in the making.

Finally, we recommend spending some of your time at the Hong Kong Dog Rescue. It’s one of the oldest animal rescue shelters in Hong Kong. While you need to be at least 18 years old to volunteer and do some training, it’s a great way to take care of abandoned and stray dogs.
