Take a break from rocking around the Christmas tree and visit these Christmas markets in Bangkok if you are visiting.

We know it doesn’t feel like it and may not necessarily look like it either, but it’s Christmas in Bangkok. The tree at CentralWorld and all the other malls are out, supermarkets display extravagant hampers, and Phrom Phong is jam-packed with traffic—oh wait, that’s just because of EmSphere. Despite only having the briefest of cold spells and the return of the usual Bangkok heat, the holidays are in full swing here in the City of Angels. To mark the occasion, several festive Christmas markets are happening all around the city. If you love Christmas as much as I do, then you should check these out.

EmSphere

christmas markets bangkok

The newest mall in Bangkok may have just opened its doors last week but it already has a festive market you could visit—that is, if you can handle the crowds. Located in the middle of the ground floor, EmSphere’s market boasts a variety of things for you to enjoy from drinks to food. There are also some seats and tables for you to enjoy your delicacies there and then, but again, it’s going to be a bit of a challenge with the crowds. There’s no definite date as to when this market will end but it will probably be around January, so pay a visit soon.

There are 30 stations connecting Nonthaburi to the Northeastern part of Bangkok, and the MRT Pink Line provides ease of access for a lot of suburban residential zones running along the line, as well as cultural sites and a few notable spots for food and drinks. So if you’re making plans in Thailand, let us throw you a few ideas.

What to do along Bangkok’s new MRT Pink Line

The Makut Rommayasaran Park is a large park popular among joggers and those who want to relax and watch the world go by. The pond in the middle has an abundance of wildlife, from birds and fish to friendly water monitors.

The Japanese-style yakiniku place is packed to the brim with different cuts of beef, pork, and even fresh sashimi if you want to switch things up. Station: Muang Thong Thani

Impact Muang Thong Thani is perfect for many visiting artists and performers to show off their talents to Thai fans, but sometimes, we think it’s just better to miss the chance to see them in person than to even bother going there. This is due to the traffic jams, the sheer distance, and the lack of public transportation. Now, thanks to the MRT Pink Line, it’s just a short motorcycle taxi ride from the station.

Vietnam’s capital city, Hanoi is eclectic and enigmatic at the same time, steeped in culture, influenced by colonialism, ravaged by wars, and known for its chaotic traffic. With 1,000 years of history, Hanoi, known as Thang Long or “Soaring Dragon” is vibrant, diverse, legendary, and traditional.

This is where you will find a train chugging along a narrow lane filled with cafes while you get lost in the atmospheric labyrinthine maze of streets in the Old Quarter. Lakes and temples are filled with legends, while cathedrals and opera houses jostle for space with pagodas and citadels. Step back in time in the leafy French Quarter, or feel the Zen at the sprawling Temple of Literature.

The flavours of Hanoi can also be experienced through delicious street food and its famous egg coffee. Take a cruise along Halong Bay or head on day trips to Ninh Binh Province to explore caves. For your next trip to the Vietnam capital, here is your curated travel guide with a list of some of the best things to do in Hanoi.

Best time to visit Hanoi

October to March is a good time to visit Hanoi as most tourists prefer travelling in autumn or spring if they are planning a cruise to Ha Long Bay. The low season is from April to September when it gets very hot and humid with frequent storms and showers. Winters see a peak of tourist traffic as temperatures cool off but the prices shoot as well.

Best free thing to do in Hanoi

Feel the calm at Hoan Hiem Lake

Located at the heart of Hanoi near the Old Quarter is a vast expanse of an enchanting lake named after a divine sword that was sent apparently by the Gods through a mystical turtle to the Emperor to defeat the Chinese. The sword was later reclaimed by the giant turtle who vanished under the lake and hence it was called Hoan Hiem Lake or “The Lake of the Restored Lake, “ or simply put, “ Sword Lake.”

There is even a Turtle Tower built on a mound in the middle of the lake. Explore the lake at sunset for mesmerising photos as you lose yourself in this oasis of calm. While entry to the lake is free, there is a fee to enter the Ngoc Son Temple located on an island in the lake that can be accessed by the red Cau The Huc Bridge.

Best fun thing to do in Hanoi

Try Egg Coffee

If you love coffee then you must go cafe hopping in the Old Quarter and try the famous Egg Coffee which was created at Cafe Griang in 1946. Ca Phe Trung or egg yolk coffee was however a wartime invention when milk became scarce and whipped egg yolk was used as a substitute.

If you are feeling experimental, then try coconut coffee with a dash of coconut milk and condensed milk or yoghurt coffee with frozen yoghurt. You can also try the classic black Vietnamese drip coffee or add a dash of condensed milk and ice if you like it chilled. Other cafes where you can try Egg Coffee are Note Cafe, Dinh Coffee, Cafe Pho Co, Leu Coffee, and Bar among others.

Best thing to do in Hanoi with Family and Kids

Watch a water puppet show

Immerse yourself in a world of fantasy and folklore, with colourful characters set in “liquid stages” as these shows with lively puppets are presented in pools of water. Water puppet shows, patronised by royalty, originated in the Red River Delta in the 11th century and were performed then in the harvested paddy fields filled with water.

The wooden puppets, painted with lacquers are manoeuvred with long bamboo sticks and strings, while puppeteers choreograph the show, creating a dramatic and vivid atmosphere. Head to Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre for a dramatic performance where there are five multilingual shows every day.

The Best Time To Visit Thailand For Great Weather, Low Prices, And Fun Festivalshttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/in/destinations/southeast-asia/the-best-time-to-visit-thailand-for-great-weather-low-prices-and-fun-festivals/2023-11-27T10:30:36+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/in/?p=234994best times to visit Thailand

Thailand is one of the most accessible and well-loved travel destinations in Southeast Asia. It’s a great place to visit any time of year, but if you’re looking to hit the beach, you’ll want to book a trip for some time during the dry, sunny season between November and early April. Weather can vary throughout the year, and crowds and prices fluctuate accordingly.

“Thailand is a tropical country with two distinct seasons,” said Jack Tydeman, a member of T+L’s A-List of travel advisors and the Southeast Asia senior specialist at Audley Travel. “It is typically warm all year round. However, the winter months from November through March are the peak dry season and are considered the best time to travel to the majority of the country. April is the hottest month in Thailand before the country moves into the wetter season from May through October.”

These are Thailand’s three travel seasons:

  • High: November to March
  • Shoulder: April to June and the month of October
  • Low: July to September

One caveat is that Thailand is a big country stretching more than 1,000 miles (1,609.34 km) from north to south, so conditions will also depend on where you are. For example, November marks the beginning of the sunny high season on the Andaman coast, but also the start of the monsoon season on the Gulf side.

So, before you book your jungle tree house and island boat tour, read on for the best times to go to Thailand.

The best times to visit Thailand

The best times to visit Thailand for great weather

For ideal weather, visit Thailand during the dry season, which for most of the country kicks off in November and lasts through March or even into April and May. A major exception is the Lower Gulf — home to the island paradises of Koh Samui, Ko Pha-ngan, and Koh Tao — which is rainiest from September through December.

On the Andaman coast, November to February has the coolest, most comfortable weather, with average temps in the 80s and little chance of rain. This means clear, blue waters and gorgeous scenery that’s lush from the previous monsoon season. On top of perfect weather, this time of year sees major Thai festivals and the Western Christmas and New Year holidays, so you’re also looking at Thailand’s biggest crowds and highest prices. Time your trip for early November and you might just beat the throngs.

[inline_related_article article_id="233392,232730"]

As for the low season, it’s best to temper your expectations. “It is possible to travel over the summer months. However, you may see some short, sharp showers,” he said. “As the east coast of Thailand has its own unique weather patterns, summer is actually the drier season there.”

The best times to visit Thailand for low prices

Thailand is a relatively affordable destination throughout the year, though travellers may find the steepest discounts on flights, accommodations, and tours during the low/monsoon season (July to September).

“The low season does have its advantages, as it’s quieter and the rates are typically lower. This makes Thailand a great value destination during the summer,” said Tydeman. “However, some months are hotter and some are wetter. As Thailand is in a tropical region, the rains tend to be short, sharp showers for most of the country. Summer is now commonly referred to as ‘green season’ due to the rains turning the countryside green and filling the rivers and waterfalls.”

Naturally, visiting during the wet season is a gamble. Rains could come in brief cloudbursts, or they could come in days-long downpours that affect boat service and island access. July brings more summer tourists and August tends to see cloudy skies and regular heavy rainfall. September is the wettest and least crowded month. To split the difference, consider visiting during the shoulder season (April through June, or October), when rains are generally of the brief afternoon storm variety.

The best times to visit Thailand for festivals

Travelers should try to experience at least one of Thailand’s many festivals, which celebrate everything from flowers and fruit to monkeys and elephants.

Two of the most beloved are the late-November Lantern Festivals: Yi Peng, during which participants release thousands of rice-paper lanterns into the sky; and Loy Krathong, for which Thais create banana-leaf baskets, fill them with flowers and burning candles, and release them onto lakes, rivers, and canals. Chiang Mai is the Yi Peng epicentre (tourists can participate with ticketed entry, starting at around USD 130/INR 10,839) and Loy Krathong is celebrated across the country.

The Chinese New Year in January or February turns Bangkok‘s Chinatown into a sea of dragons, drummers, worshippers, and visitors, all under the glow of firecrackers and red lanterns. Also in February is the three-day Flower Festival in Chiang Mai, which culminates with a parade of elaborate floats painstakingly decorated with chrysanthemums, damask roses, and other varieties.

Songkran (a.k.a. Water Splashing Festival) ushers in the Thai New Year in mid-April with parades, parties, and performances across the country. “Songkran turns Thailand turns into one big water fight,” said Tydeman. “It also coincides with the hottest month of the year, so it’s a perfect excuse to get wet.”

The Vegetarian Festival takes place in late September or early October and commemorates nine-day abstinence from meat in honour of the Nine Emperor Gods of Taosim.

Divers from all over the world flock to Thailand to explore the country’s famous underwater sites and stunning marine parks. Thailand’s east coast is largely dive-friendly throughout the year. If you plan an excursion to the Andaman Sea — home to the extraordinary Similan and Surin Islands — time the trip between November and April when the seas are calm and visibility is clearest. Also, keep in mind that Similan and Surin marine parks close from mid-May to mid-October.

The best times to visit Thailand for Island-hopping

Boating from one jungle-topped limestone island to another is a great way to explore Thailand, but downpours between May and October can put the kibosh on nautical fun. Some southern Andaman resorts even close for the rainy season.

“The islands off the west coast, like Phuket, are best to visit in the winter months, whereas the islands off the east coast, like Koh Samui, are great to visit in the summer,” said Tydeman.

This means you should time your bouncing around Phuket, the Phi Phi Islands, Ko Lanta, and other Andaman isles between late October (when the rains taper off) and May or June. Ko Lanta is effectively closed during the monsoon season — you may be able to get there, but accommodation options are seriously limited. Conversely, Gulf of Thailand idylls Koh Samui, Koh Tao, and Ko Pha-Ngan are at their rainiest and windiest between October and December.

If you want to avoid the crowds, keep in mind that students from Australia and Europe flock to Thailand’s islands in June and July to work and party during their summer breaks.

No matter what time of year you visit Thailand, try to fit in at least one weekend in Bangkok so you can experience the vast Chatuchak Weekend Market, open from 9 am – 6 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. In fact, most of the stalls are covered, so you can visit even on a rainy day.

Tydeman also recommended visiting Bangkok’s night markets, which offer “everything from original artwork and designer bags to kitschy souvenirs and secondhand books.”

Chiang Mai’s weekend markets deserve a look as well. Every Saturday night, Wua Lai Road (just south of the Old City) closes to traffic and hosts hundreds of silversmiths, wood carvers, clothing purveyors, sketch artists, and performing musicians. On Sundays, the scene essentially repeats itself along the length of Ratchadamnoen Road, which bustles with artisans, food vendors, and massage stations.

The Quiet Islands In Thailand You May Not Have Heard Abouthttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/in/destinations/southeast-asia/quiet-islands-in-thailand-you-may-not-have-heard-about/2023-11-20T02:30:43+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/in/?p=233392quiet islands thailand

Phuket and Koh Samui are certainly gems to check out, but sometimes you may prefer somewhere in Thailand more quiet, and less tourist-y. Check out these quiet islands in Thailand instead.

The glistening beaches, the deep blue sea, the welcoming hospitality — there are things in Thailand that just seem to take you back again and again. While the popular attractions are a great starting point for many, there are times you want to really have a bit of R&R, far away from the crowds and the noise of the mainstream. You want something lowkey, something that feels local, and not just fire shows and random shots from girls with henna tattoos.

Why not check out some of the more quiet islands in Thailand for a change and get away from it all? Here’s a handy guide.

Quiet islands in Thailand you may not have heard about

Koh Nom Sao

Located in Phang Nga Bay, Koh Nom Sao is made up of twin islands that got their names from resembling the shape of women’s breasts from certain angles (we’re not joking). With a 500-metre-long shallow reef and a gorgeous beach, it’s perfect for snorkelling and surrounding yourself with sealife or just cracking open a book on the beach which is normally not busy at all.

Koh Kradan

Koh Kradan is known as one of the most beautiful islands in Trang, and it doesn’t get as much attention as it should, due to its remote location. The conservation efforts here keep the water pristine and the vibes not tourist-centric. For the full experience, allocate three hours of your day so you can kayak around the island.

Koh Phayam

A short ride away from Ranong will take you to this remote sanctuary. Most of the community makes its living with plantations and coastal fishery and is very welcoming to those who want to get more in touch with local culture. The sandy white beaches are far away from the crowds, and the bay on the East is perfect for watching the sunset. Even though it’s quite a large island, there are plenty of bicycle rental shops and motorcycle taxis, so sightseeing around the island is easily arranged.

Koh Tarutao

Koh Tarutao is considered one of the most unspoiled islands of the Andaman, located a short boat ride away from Satun province. Between 1938 and 1948, the island was used as a prison to hold political prisoners and other criminals. Now, it’s part of Tarutao National Park, Thailand’s first marine national park that was recognised by UNESCO as an ASEAN Heritage Park and Reserve. Since it’s a national park, there are no hotels on the island, but you can find allocated campsites, or simply live along the Satun coast and make this island a day trip.

Koh Muk

Translating to “Pearl Island,” Koh Muk has one attraction that you cannot miss at all costs: the Emerald Cave. On a boat, you must float along the waters of the cave in complete darkness for about 80 metres in order to get to the other side. But once you make it through, you’ll see how the sunlight reflects on the cave water, causing the water in the beautiful lagoon inside to be emerald green in colour as it is surrounded by white, glimmering sand. You also have the option to swim inside, if that’s your thing. It’s quite a unique experience and is annually closed from June to September to let nature inside heal.

Koh Sukon

Koh Sukon
Image credit: Thailand Authority of Tourism

If you want a low-key experience as you surround yourself with the essence of the local community, Koh Sukon is the perfect quiet island to be at. All year long, you’ll get to walk along rice paddies, fisheries, children collecting shells, people planting rubber, and more. Other than that, it is fantastically quiet, and you can really feel rested and relaxed for as long as you choose to stay. Trang is famous for its delicious watermelons in the Summer, so grab one if you happen to be around during that season.

Koh Wai

Koh Wai

Located South of Koh Chang, Koh Wai is home to beautiful coral reefs and clear blue waters. The island is very small in size; only 3km in length and 1km wide. As the middle part is largely covered by a forest, Koh Wai is a lovely place to go sightseeing and bird-watching, as the more rugged West side serves as a nesting ground for birds. There are bungalows if you plan on staying the night, but many choose to make it a day trip and stay on the mainland instead.

Koh Jum

The gorgeous Krabi province normally has travellers flocking to Phi Phi and Lanta islands, and the beautiful Koh Jum is overlooked by many. Each beach is easily reachable via a scooter (rentals can be found on the island), and a few beach bars make watching the sunset all the better. Even in high seasons, you’ll have the beach mostly to yourself — it’s certainly a big contender for one of the best quiet islands in Thailand. You can also go for a jungle hike and visit villages on the island, which are filled with very welcoming locals.

10 Tips For A Wallet-Friendly Thailand Triphttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/in/travel-tips/planning/tips-for-travelling-in-thailand-on-a-budget/2023-11-15T07:30:04+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/in/?p=232730thailand on a budget tips hacks

If you’re visiting Thailand, there are ways to make the most of your money. Here are some tips for a wallet-friendly trip to Thailand.

Thailand is on many travel bucket lists, in part for being cost-effective. The white, sandy beaches, the rich cultural heritage, the mouthwatering food, the lively nightlife — all of those and more can be yours for a relatively lower price.

However, if you are looking for a pocket-friendly trip, we’ve gathered all the local insights and tips on how you can make the most of your trip to Thailand. No need to spend like a king to be treated like one.

10 tips for a pocket-friendly trip to Thailand

1. Avoid the taxi if you can

It’s not that uncommon to find taxis that will charge exorbitant prices, especially during rush hours, heavy rain, or going to and from popular tourist destinations. Make sure every taxi you jump into uses the meter like they’re supposed to, and be wary of those who detour from the fastest route to drive up the meter.

Check if your destination is near the MRT or the BTS. Public transportation may offer a cost-effective method of getting to your destination, but note that it gets very crowded during rush hours.

Buses are the most pocket-friendly, although you will need plenty of planning as these routes can be quite complicated. We recommend downloading the ViaBus app beforehand to help.

[inline_related_article article_id="224406,224081"]

2. Stay a bit away from the urban sprawl

Some areas in Bangkok are more popular than others when tourists look for accommodation. The Old Town, along the river, or any of the Greater Bangkok districts offer more budget-friendly rooms. Staying in Sukhumvit area means you’ll be close to many food spots, shopping malls, and nightlife venues. Those things also mean the prices will run a bit higher.

Consider looking at accommodations that may not be near attractions, but are near the BTS or the MRT. Stations such as Sanam Pao and Onnut don’t really have anything much to visit, but heading somewhere from there won’t take much time.

3. Travel during the low season

Fun fact: Thailand is not the most popular destination between April to May, and July to September. It will be easier to book flights and find accommodation during this time as more rooms are available. Still, there’s a reason why it’s not popular to travel to Thailand during this time of year. April to May are the hottest months, so pack your sunscreen and portable fans. July to September is monsoon season, which makes it significantly harder to travel around the city.

4. Dine at local places

By local, we mean really, really local — the ones down the street with all the menus in Thai language. A good krapow with rice and topped with fried egg will cost around THB 60 or INR 140 (even less outside of Bangkok), and you can point at the pictures on the walls to order. Street food is also the way to go if you’re looking to try multiple things in one meal.

You might want to prep a handful of Thai phrases to order, ask how much something is, and saying thank you. You’ll find most Thais adoring foreigners who try to speak the language, even if it’s not perfect. Local places also tend to prefer cash, and rarely take card payments, so keep this in mind.

5. Avoid stores with no price tags

Contrary to the 2011 pop hit by Jessie J, one should not forget about the price tag. If a stall doesn’t list their prices, they’re most likely giving out different prices for different people.

You can ask and try to bargain, but it’s most likely best to just keep walking until you find another stall. Chances are you’ll find another selling similar items in no time.

6. Haggle (where appropriate) for a decent price

Especially during your first trip to Thailand, it’s hard to resist the thrill of a tuk-tuk ride around town. While they’re not the most pocket-friendly, it’s definitely a fun way to get to your destination. What you want to do is to make sure they know where exactly you are going to, and negotiate a good price. Once you get a price that feels acceptable for you, then you jump in. Whilst haggling isn’t that common in Thailand anymore, it is still very much common practice when it comes to tuk-tuks.

7. Visit free attractions in Thailand

There are many things to do and places to visit in Thailand that are completely free of charge. In Bangkok, take relaxing walks in parks (Lumphini Park, Benjakitti Park, Chatuchak Park), or visit museums (Bangkok Arts and Culture Centre, National Museum Bangkok, Erawan Museum), all free of charge. Most temples charge a very small fee for foreigners to enter, though you can likely find smaller temples that allow you to enter free of charge. The famous Wat Saket allows you to visit the sanctuary for free, but has a THB 50 (INR 117) fee if you want to walk up the Golden Mount.

It’s not just in Bangkok, either. Visiting Jomtien Beach and the Big Buddha Temple in Pattaya doesn’t cost anything, and hitting beaches in the South is also free.

8. Take advantage of happy hours

When you’re out to get something to drink, Thai beers are cost way less than imported ones. Many restaurants and bars also offer generous happy hours. There are various reasons why people flock to Khaosan, and one of them is how budget-friendly the drinks can be. If you’re willing to drink from buckets, you could get smashed for around THB 400 (INR 938).

9. Get acquainted with 7-Elevens

You can stock up a lot for very less in the 7-Eleven convenience stores everywhere in Thailand. They’ve got snacks, convenience foods, hygiene products — you name it. It’s a great spend if you don’t feel like going anywhere and decide to spend some me-time in your room.

And if you haven’t tried the 7-Eleven toasties, you’re in for a good time.

10. Travel with overnight trains

Kill two birds with one stone with this trick. Trains are, of course, a better alternative to plane tickets when travelling domestically, and you spend less if you travel during night time versus day time, making it one of the best ways to travel through Thailand on a budget. Plus, it saves you money on a night of accommodation. Just sleep as the train runs, then wake up and suddenly you’re in Chiang Mai. Budget-friendly travel in Thailand done right.
