Lush paradise, turquoise waters, idyllic getaway — these are all phrases often used to describe the beautiful places in the Caribbean. And though this collection of countries in the middle of the ocean contains a shared allure of natural wonders, each one also has its own history and cultural traditions.

I’ve been fortunate to visit a number of Caribbean nations, bordered by white, black, and pink sands below swaying palms, and it never grows old. The vendors with freshly plucked coconuts and plastic cups filled with dark rum to enjoy as the sun sinks into sherbet-coloured clouds. A plate of jerk chicken pulled from a charcoal-fired pit on the side of the road and splashed with mango chutney to cool the scotch bonnet. A parade of smiles and feathers and palatable joy as revellers make their way down the road for Carnival Tuesday. These are all moments that make the Caribbean beautiful.

Below, you’ll find a list of places that expand on that idea, from sustainable, jungle-shrouded hotels without any crowds to flavourful, farm-to-table experiences tucked on quiet hillsides. We tapped two Caribbean experts — writer, editor and on-air travel expert Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon and author and chef Adrian Forte — to help us compile a list of 25 of the most beautiful places in the Caribbean.

The most beautiful places in the Caribbean

Tahiti Beach, Bahamas

Located on the southern end of Elbow Cay in the Bahamas, and only accessible by foot, boat, or bike, Tahiti Beach stays with you long after you’ve left it. “As many times as I’ve been to the Caribbean and to the Bahamas, you’d think I’d be immune to the beauty of this sandbar, which disappears at high tide. But its silky white sand, surrounded by a swath of iconic Bahamian blue, stuns me every single time,” says Greaves-Gabbadon. Alaska Airlines also recently launched a number of nonstop flights from my hometown of Los Angeles to Nassau, so I’ll be heading back to the country for Carnival next year.

Canouan, St. Vincent and the Grenadines

Untouched by cruise ships and crowds, Canouan is a 3.2-square-mile (8.28 square kilometre) island in the Grenadines, just a 40-minute plane ride from Barbados. It’s home to the jungly Soho Beach House and the coral-hued beachfront Mandarin Oriental. Snorkeling here is also supreme, with water so vibrantly blue, it glows.

Petit St. Vincent, St. Vincent and the Grenadines

With 135 acres of private coastline floating in the Grenadines, Petit St. Vincent is a luxury resort with just 22 cottages steps away from cerulean waters. “Posh but unpretentious, this all-inclusive private island resort is a bit of a haul to reach (from Miami, it takes two planes, a golf cart, and a boat), but the journey is worth it,” says Greaves-Gabbadon. “When I’m not reading on the porch of my cottage (all serviced by butlers in a fleet of Mini Mokes), I like to hike up Marni Hill, laze on any (or all) of the four beaches, or sip a rum punch at the beach bar, Goatie’s.”

Jakes Hotel Treasure Beach, Jamaica

beautiful places in the caribbean

I can close my eyes and see the roads from Kingston — bumpy and winding — but worth the three-hour drive to reach this slice of solitude on Jamaica’s south coast. You won’t find high-rise hotels or crowds here. Upon arrival, it’s a straightaway to my home away from home at Jakes, a boutique hotel with seaside bungalows and villas spread about Treasure Beach’s rugged coastline. Spend a day at Jakes’ poolside bar, order a rum punch, and repeat. In the morning, have a filling breakfast of ackee and salt fish with fried plantain at the property’s restaurant. And, if you love to read like I do, come for the biannual Calabash International Literary Festival, a weekend that includes communing with some of the world’s greatest literary minds as they read from their work with lapping waves in the background.

Sheer Rocks, Antigua

Sheer Rocks

Located on a cliffside on Antigua’s west coast, this is dining with a view taken up a notch. “It doesn’t get much sexier than this waterfront restaurant at Cocobay Resort, where you can dine in cabanas built into the cliff’s edge and swim in ocean-view plunge pools between courses,” says Greaves-Gabbadon.

[myaffiliate type="normal" button_name="Book your stay at Cocobay Resort Antigua - All Inclusive - Adults Only via Booking.com" url="https://www.booking.com/hotel/ag/cocobay-resort.en-gb.html?aid=356980&label=gog235jc-1DCAsoBEIOY29jb2JheS1yZXNvcnRIM1gDaGyIAQGYAQm4ARfIAQzYAQPoAQGIAgGoAgO4AsSBwKsGwAIB0gIkNzhiMzI2ZmItMjc2ZS00ZWY3LWFkZmEtODIwMGMzNTg1OGRi2AIE4AIB&sid=71a759f476efdc925754880a959dd178&dist=0&keep_landing=1&sb_price_type=total&type=total&" align="center" class="affiliate-three"]

Stush in the Bush, Jamaica

This plant-based, farm-to-table experience is offered in the hills of St. Ann, near Ocho Rios. Here, the flavours of Jamaica are presented as a love letter to the surrounding terrain that produces the food. Owners Chris and Lisa Binns seek to connect visitors to the earth at every turn, with a farm tour and rustic dinner of rotating dishes that have included a Jamaican mezze board of crispy plantain chips, coconut-crusted yams, and pineapple croquettes.

Wild Cow Run, Turks and Caicos

beautiful places in the caribbean

One of the most beautiful places in the Caribbean, Grace Bay in Providenciales sees its fair share of visitors — and for good reason: The white-sand beach rivals those seen in the Maldives.

But go beyond Provo and you’ll reach Middle Caicos, the largest of the islands in Turks and Caicos, with a wild beauty of its own. “Few visitors ever venture far enough to see this wild and wonderful beach, secreted at the southern tip of Middle Caicos, so I feel fortunate to have been introduced to it by a resident,” says Greaves-Gabbadon. “Walk through the stand of casuarina trees shielding the beach from the road and you’ll be rewarded with quite a sight: two miles (3.21 km) of completely deserted, blinding-white sand that meets gin-clear water, knee-deep for almost a mile (1.6 km) out. If beach was a religion, this would be its cathedral.”

Jardin de Balata, Martinique

Known for its world-class rums, Martinique has a slew of impressive beaches, too, from Le Diamant to Les Anses-d’Arlet. For a trip away from the island’s sandy shores, head to Jardin de Balata and learn why Martinique is called the “Island of Flowers.” At this thriving, three-hectare botanical garden just outside the capital of Fort-de-France, more than 3,000 varieties of flora and fauna bloom brightly. Take a canopy ride for panoramic views. And for cultural events, there’s Martinique’s three-day Carnival in February, where I’ve recently learned the crowd is entirely part of the parade in what’s called a vidé.

Grand Fond Natural Pools, St. Barts

On an island known for its exclusivity and luxury, visitors can opt for an adventure that only requires a good pair of walking shoes and a bathing suit. After a 30-minute walk along a winding path, you’ll reach two natural pools enclosed by craggy rocks jutting from the sea. If the waves are strong, it’s best to watch from a distance, but on a clear day, floating in the emerald-coloured water is simply magical.

Blue Hole, Jamaica

Jamaica

One of the most sought-after locations in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, the crystal-clear waters of the Blue Hole are surrounded by vegetation and a hilly interior. “This is a series of natural limestone sinkholes and lush untouched forestry. I visited with my fiancé and a few of our closest friends. The view from the top of the tropical falls is stunning, and if you’re the adventurous type like me, jumping off a 30-foot cliff makes you feel like you can conquer anything afterwards,” says Holmes.

Dominica

Image Credit: Joseph Thomas Photography/Getty Images

Nicknamed the “Nature Island,” Dominica is home to rain forests, bubbling rivers, ocean kayaking trails, and rushing waterfalls. A few of the island’s most beautiful natural wonders include Morne Trois Pitons National Park, Champagne Reef, and the Botanic Gardens. For an eco-friendly retreat, check into Coulibri Ridge, a 14-suite, off-the-grid luxury hotel that uses solar energy as its main power source and features an open-air yoga pavilion. For a black-sand beach escape, my favourite pick is Secret Bay, set on a secluded cliff with residential-style villas that have their own plunge pools. In February, the streets become filled with revellers for Dominica’s Mas Domnik Carnival celebration, which includes music competitions, a variety of parties, and masqueraders dressed in bright regalia.

Nayara Bocas del Toro, Panama

Panama

With 16 overwater villas, this adults-only eco-resort on a private island along the Caribbean coast does not disappoint. Flanked by three miles (4.82 km) of coral reefs teeming with sea life, snorkellers will have lots to explore at Nayara Bocas del Toro. Kayak, paddleboard, and swim directly from your room, but not before enjoying Caribbean breakfast classics like Johnny Cakes. Some villas here include glass floor panels for viewing underwater life, while two one-bedroom bamboo tree houses tower some 40 feet above the ground. The property also boasts the world’s first overwater beach, suspended on stilts and stretching 90 feet long by 20 feet wide.

Port of Spain, Trinidad

beautiful places in the caribbean

You’ve likely seen images of Trinidad’s Carnival — one of the greatest and most beautiful traditions in the Caribbean — but you may not know its origin, which is rooted in rebellion and celebration against all odds by enslaved West Africans. Today, Trinidad’s capital, Port of Spain, draws travellers from around the Caribbean, Europe, and even Japan to party into the early morning — rum in hand. My favourite moment of it all is J’ouvert — a call to meet the rising sun, bodies splashed in powder and paint — and Caesar’s Army’s A.M. Bush — a wild party that takes place in an open field. A word to the wise: Get tickets early, as Caesar’s Army events are always the most popular during Carnival. In 2024, the energy is sure to be as magnetic as ever.

Pigeon Point, Tobago

Easily one of the most picturesque beaches in the Caribbean, Pigeon Point contains all the elements of a postcard-perfect day: sugary white sand, strikingly turquoise water, and palm trees swaying slowly above it all. Located on the southwestern tip of Tobago, it’s a popular place for sunbathing and water sports, without much foot traffic or noise.

Oil Nut Bay, Virgin Gorda

beautiful places in the caribbean

Tucked in the North Sound area of Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands, Oil Nut Bay is 400 acres of luxurious relaxation. Visitors here will find a beach club with three pools and a swim-up bar; Nova, an overwater restaurant; and hiking trails with views overlooking the Caribbean. One of the villas, Compass Rose, spans 3,653 square feet and features two swimming pools. Another way to see the British Virgin Islands? The Moorings offer chartered catamarans and yachts to various destinations around the region, including Virgin Gorda, the less-frequented coral island of Anegada, and Saba Rock.

Grenada

Grenada

Nicknamed the Caribbean’s “Spice Isle” because of its abundance of cinnamon, nutmeg, and more, Grenada lures visitors with fewer crowds than neighbouring islands, beautiful Grand Anse Beach, the history of Jab Jab during Carnival season (when bodies are splashed in black oil and paint as a symbol of Black pride), and an addictive plate of crab back at BB’s. To take in the island’s beauty, drive up to Fort Frederick for a panoramic view. Want to learn more about the island? My favourite guide, Roger Augustine, provides the best tours on the island. When it’s time to find a hotel, my first choice is always the Black-owned Spice Island Beach Resort. Six Senses La Sagesse will also open in early 2024, stretching across 38 acres in the bucolic parish of St. David.

Jade Mountain, St. Lucia

Jade Mountain

Set between two beaches on St. Lucia’s southwestern coast, Jade Mountain offers views that seamlessly blend into its cliffside location above the Piton Mountains, plus rooms with 15-foot ceilings, infinity pools, and 24-hour butler service. Even from a distance while approaching by boat, it’s easily one of the most striking hotels in the Caribbean. Looking for a honeymoon location? This is it. It will be hard to leave your room, but if you do, the village of Soufrière, filled with great restaurants like Orlando’s and the island’s famous Sulphur Springs, is not far.

Yemaya Reefs, Little Corn Island

beautiful places in the caribbean

Past rows of mangroves and jungle, Yemaya Reefs on Little Corn Island reveals itself some 50 miles (80.46 km) off Nicaragua’s eastern coast. Step onto the sand and head to one of 16 individual casitas, some with plunge pools. Everything here is intimate, from the service to the communal yoga pavilion and thatched-roof restaurant. The food at Yemaya Reefs is particularly impressive, with dishes that celebrate Afro-Nicaraguan influences like gallo pinto (rice and beans) and rondón, a filling coconut-based stew with root vegetables and seafood like fish and crab. To get to Yemaya, you’ll need to take a 90-minute flight from the capital city of Managua, and then a 30-minute boat ride from Big Corn Island — all of which can be coordinated with the hotel.

[myaffiliate type="normal" button_name="Book your stay at Yemaya Reefs via Booking.com" url="https://www.booking.com/hotel/ni/yemaya-island-hideaway-amp-spa.en-gb.html?aid=356980&label=gog235jc-1DCAsoqAFCHnllbWF5YS1pc2xhbmQtaGlkZWF3YXktYW1wLXNwYUgzWANobIgBAZgBCbgBF8gBDNgBA-gBAYgCAagCA7gC_5zAqwbAAgHSAiQ4YmI0NmQ1Zi02ZDVjLTQxZjktYjgxYy00MzdiMTIwOGVmMTHYAgTgAgE&sid=71a759f476efdc925754880a959dd178&dist=0&keep_landing=1&sb_price_type=total&type=total&" align="center" class="affiliate-seven"] [myaffiliate type="normal" button_name="Book your stay at Yemaya Reefs via Agoda.com" url="https://www.agoda.com/yemaya-island-hideaway/hotel/little-corn-island-ni.html?cid=1844104&ds=krX0NA1CGzbWBbEX" align="center" class="affiliate-eight"]

Pinel Island, St. Martin

Pinel Island

A tropical nature reserve located just off the coast of St. Martin, Pinel Island checks off all the boxes for a memorable beach day: soft white sand, beachfront restaurants, and a number of water activities. The best way to spend the day here? Grab a table or beach lounger at Karibuni and choose from dishes like octopus ceviche or a platter of conch boudin and codfish fritters. The ocean views are worth admission alone.

[myaffiliate type="normal" button_name="Book your stay at Karibuni via Booking.com" url="https://www.booking.com/hotel/mf/karibuni-lodge.en-gb.html?aid=356980&label=gog235jc-1DCAsokAFCDmthcmlidW5pLWxvZGdlSDNYA2hsiAEBmAEJuAEXyAEM2AED6AEBiAIBqAIDuALQksCrBsACAdICJDlhODI5Y2JiLTUyNzYtNDViNS04Mjk0LTA5MDgxOWJlZDA0NNgCBOACAQ&sid=71a759f476efdc925754880a959dd178&dist=0&keep_landing=1&sb_price_type=total&type=total&" align="center" class="affiliate-nine"]

Flamenco Beach, Puerto Rico

beautiful places in the caribbean

When I first visited Flamenco Beach on the island of Culebra, I stood still for a few moments, knowing the short plane ride I feared was well worth this remote slice of beach in front of me. The horse-shaped bay with shallow turquoise waters can be reached via a 15-minute flight or a 1.5-hour ferry. Upon arriving, there are a number of food stalls to enjoy as well.

Ambergris Cay, Turks and Caicos

Ambergris Cay

This 1,100-acre private island is a place to get away from it all, with 17 bungalows, eight villas, and a collection of privately owned homes and luxury accommodations. You’ll share the place with sunbathing iguanas and, if you’re lucky, a few whales in the distance. My favourite rooms are the beachfront suites with private plunge pools and an unobstructed view between the front door and the ocean.

[myaffiliate type="normal" button_name="Shop the best travel experiences here " url="https://experiences.travelandleisureasia.com/" align="center" class="affiliate-ten"]

La Cabane, Barbados

If you’re looking for the perfect Caribbean afternoon, this is your place. It includes all the necessary elements: good rum and wine; a pristine, uncrowded beach; and, of course, easy vibes. La Cabane on Barbados’ west coast provides a St. Tropez-style beach club experience without any unnecessary frills. Walk barefoot and order a lobster. While you wait, take a dip in Batts Rock Beach just steps away, and don’t leave without a rum punch. Another favourite? Cutters. “I’ve frequented Barbados for the last five years consecutively to attend the Food and Rum Festival. I can say, without a doubt, the best experience I’ve had on the island is at Cutters. They make the best rum punch in the world, using the best ingredients, including freshly pressed sugar cane for their simple syrup” says Forte.

Guana Island, British Virgin Islands

beautiful places in the caribbean

Total seclusion is king on this private island in the British Virgin Islands. “There are private island resorts and then there’s Guana Island, a private island resort that’s so exclusive, non-guests can’t even swing by for a drink or dinner. The result? A luxe, low-key getaway that’s reliably tranquil, and whose seven beaches you’ll share with a maximum of 31 other (lucky) guests,” says Greaves-Gabbadon.

Emara Estate, Turks and Caicos

Emara estate

For a gorgeous group getaway located on its own six acres, check into Emara Estate in Providenciales. One of the most beautiful places in the Caribbean, this 17-bedroom villa is tucked away on its own private peninsula, nestled between tropical trees. “It’s one of the most beautiful private villas I’ve been to — and it was also formerly owned by legendary musician Prince Rogers Nelson,” says Forte.

Piton Mountains, St. Lucia

beautiful places in the caribbean

Sprouting from the Caribbean Sea like a scene from Jurassic Park, these two volcanic plugs on St. Lucia’s southwestern coast leave me in awe every time I see them. While winding the hillsides of the country, the mountains peak out at various turns, but my favourite spot to view them is by boat or from the sand at Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort. Afterwards, head to the town of Soufrière and have lunch at Fedo’s. (Tip: Don’t skip the fresh juice of the day.)

Savour A Slice Of San Francisco And Toast To Its Timeless Culinary Offeringshttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/in/destinations/culinary-offerings-in-san-francisco/2023-12-07T06:17:49+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/in/?p=237632San Francisco

It would be a shame indeed if you departed from San Francisco in the United States of America without getting a taste of its culinary offerings—from timeless American and Latino dishes to Asian delights, fusion food, innovative ice creams, and drinks.

Culinary Offerings in San Francisco

Fisherman’s Wharf
Explore the iconic Fisherman’s Wharf for a taste of the city’s culinary delights.

Be it Wayfare Tavern and Tadich Grill in the Financial District for the American experience; bayside dining at La Mar, Waterbar, and EPIC Steak; Boudin Bakery at Fisherman’s Wharf; Dungeness crab at PIER 39; or the historic Scoma’s, you are never far from a famous restaurant or bar in San Francisco.

In the shopping hub of Union Square, there is Campton Place Bar & Bistro which offers an interesting twist on Indian cuisine, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian. While Cafe de la Presse is known for French specialities, Le Colonial weaves a fusion of French and Vietnamese cuisine.

Global Flavours on a Platter

Dungeness crab.
The city is famous for its Dungeness crab.

If Little Italy is the right place for the best pizzas on the West Coast, then the best burritos can be found in Mission, the hub of San Francisco’s Latino community. If you are in the Castro district, the hub of the city’s LGBTQ scene, must-try places include Hot Cookie (colossal cookies in various flavours) or Marcello’s (for pizza by the slice).

Enjoy seafood in the Bayview on San Francisco’s south side, especially at The Old Clam House (running since 1861). Radio Africa & Kitchen, a pioneer in SF’s restaurant pop-up trend, offers favourites like chicken jambalaya and saffron prawns on select days. Finally, stop by the heart of San Francisco Bay on Treasure Island. The Woods Island Club offers a diverse beer selection.

This Canadian Wine Region Has North America's First Indigenous-Owned Wineryhttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/in/destinations/north-america/this-canadian-wine-region-has-north-americas-first-indigenous-owned-winery/2023-12-03T07:30:56+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/in/?p=235983Oliver Osoyoos Wine Country

Oliver Osoyoos Wine Country’s 4,000 acres of vineyards in South Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, represents more than half of the wine produced in Canada. Within that space is Nk’Mip Cellars, North America’s first Indigenous-owned and operated winery, led by Osoyoos nation member and winemaker Justin Hall. The diverse mix of nationalities in the area helped shape the region through their winemaking heritage and agricultural knowledge.

Some, like Kismet Estate Winery, even have on-site restaurants where their British Columbia wines are paired with traditional Native Canadian cuisine. At Phantom Creek, Napa veteran Mark Beringer puts his touch on the region’s winemaking. Beyond his knowledgeable approach to this fledgling area, Phantom Creek features a hidden wine cave where guests can dine in luxury underneath a custom-designed Chihuly sculpture crafted to represent the evolution of the winery.

All you need to know about this picturesque Canadian wine region

Jennifer Busmann, executive director of Oliver Osoyoos Wine Country, told Travel + Leisure what makes Oliver Osoyoos an undiscovered gem among other Canadian wine regions is “the diversity in terroir and all the microclimates. In one tiny region, we can grow beautiful pinot noir, then a mile (1.6 km) down the road we’re growing some of the world’s best syrah, across the valley, we have three wineries growing cabernet franc that competes on a world-stage.”

And now you can collect stamps on a digital passport to track which of the 50 wineries and tasting rooms you’ve visited, unlocking exclusive experiences, discounts, and prizes. Here’s how to plan a trip to the underrated Canadian wine region.

Best hotels and resorts

Watermark Beach Resort

Steps from Osoyoos Lake, Watermark Beach Resort features condo-style suites with expansive patios and views of the beach and mountains. Adding to the charm are two swimming pools, outdoor hot tubs, an on-site spa and yoga/pilates studio, and a marina nestled against the shores of Canada’s warmest lake. The central location offers easy access to the award-winning wineries, as well as a walkable downtown with coffee shops and small boutiques.

Spirit Ridge Lake Resort at Nk’Mip winery sits amid Canada’s only desert (sacred to the Osoyoos nation) with gently sloping vineyards, Osoyoos Lake, and Anarchist Mountain wrapping around. Each of the 226 adobe-style suites features spacious kitchens and cosy fireplaces, and some are even pet-friendly. Check in at Solterra Desert Spa for a sacred mud wrap or test your game at the on-site Sonora Dunes Golf Course. The Nk’Mip Desert Cultural Centre’s exhibits teach about the history of the nation, as well as the land and traditions through multi-sensory theatre experiences. Hester Creek Villas

The six Hester Creek Villas overlook rows of wine grapes, orchards, and a panoramic view of the South Okanagan Valley. The Mediterranean-style suites come equipped with two electric vehicle charging stations, a homemade breakfast, and stunning sunrises over the vineyard. “The on-site restaurant Terrafina has a fantastic menu,” Busmann said. “You can also take cooking classes, and make charcuterie and cheese boards to enjoy out on the patio, listening to live music while your kids run around the grass. Hester Creek really makes every day a special occasion.”

Burrowing Owl Guest House

Busmann also recommends the Burrowing Owl Guest House with its 10 spacious rooms. Each space has a cosy fireplace, a private deck overlooking the 140-acre environmentally sustainable vineyard, and a daily wine country breakfast. Get in some laps at the 82-foot outdoor pool or soak after a long day of biking around the vineyards in the all-season hot tub.

Best things to do

The Festival of the Grape

Festival of the grape
Image Credit: Oliver Osoyoos Wine Country

Canada’s only grape stomp happens annually in September in Oliver Community Park. Food trucks, an artisan market, an art show, and live entertainment sit alongside 50 wineries from across the region to celebrate The Festival of the Grape. Busmann added, “It’s family-friendly, and it reminds people that wine doesn’t have to be pretentious. We have fun, make memories, and break bread together while highlighting all the great winemakers of our region.” The feature of the event is the stomp where teams compete to crush the most grapes, just like in the scene from I Love Lucy.

Half Corked marathon

In late May, the roads fill with wine-fueled runners competing in Canada’s buzziest race, the iconic Half Corked Marathon. The 13.1-mile (21.08 km) course winds through the vineyards, valleys, and along the Okanagan River with winery stations on the route to keep the cheer flowing. T+L even covered the event, reporting, “The event’s laidback wine tasting vibe speaks to the approachable and unpretentious nature of wine touring in the valley — you can still pop in to many of the valley’s wineries without a reservation, and tasting fees rarely top CAD 10 (INR 614) per person.”

The Pig Out Festival

Oliver Osoyoos Wine Country
Image Credit: Oliver Osoyoos Wine Country

Wine and barbecue? Yes, please. The annual Pig Out Festival is another family-friendly event that showcases local ingredients, wines of the region, and casual outdoor fun every May. Busmann elaborated, “All of the dishes are pork-focused and we always incorporate a theme like ‘May the Pork Be With You’ where everything was inspired by Star Wars. It’s outdoors, there is world-class food from top chefs around Canada, there’s award-winning wine, and you’re in this juxtaposition of being in a beautiful vineyard while eating with your hands.”

Venables Theatre

Catch a performance at Venables Theatre — the modern community theatre featuring a wide range of performing arts events from dance and music to shows and children’s events. Visitors can enjoy “Venables Alive!,” a local artist series featuring musicians, actors, dancers, comedians, and spoken word poets between November and March.

International Hike & Bike Trail

Whether you are cycling on a traditional bike, e-biking, or just looking for a beautiful walking path, the International Hike & Bike Trail features some gorgeous views. The 12.5-mile (20.11 km) trail begins at Osoyoos Lake’s north end and follows the Okanagan River Channel through farms and vineyards. It’s well-maintained, relatively flat, and is accessed at the wooden bridge on Road 22.

Best Restaurants

Masala Bistro

Kismet Winery’s Masala Bistro is unlike anything else you will find in Oliver. The modern restaurant sits amid a picturesque vineyard with mountain views. The classic Indian menu features favourites like butter chicken, lamb vindaloo, whole fish cooked tandoori-style, and so much more. Each dish has a suggested wine pairing and the knowledgeable staff can guide you with bottle selections. Busmann loves this place and added, “They do some North Indian dishes, which we don’t see a ton of here, and it’s all outstanding.”

TacoRiendo Mexican Cantina

Originally from Mazatlán, Mexico, Jany Lopez moved to the area in 2002. She and her husband opened TacoRienda in 2021 and it has been bursting at the seams with customers ever since. The menu features comforting classics like tortas, tostadas, and tacos, and the portions are ample. Busmann brings people from all over the world to eat at this humble eatery. “I love it. I love to eat and eat and eat and eat. They make a really mean burrito, and I’m a sucker for their enchiladas,” she said.

The Restaurant at Phantom Creek

phantom creek winery

For an ultra-luxe experience head to the Restaurant at Phantom Creek Estates. The winery produces delicious bottles of single-vineyard Bordeaux reds, Alsatian whites, and varieties of viognier and syrah from certified organic vineyards. The glass-encased restaurant offers sweeping vineyard, desert, and lake views while dining on Indigenous-inspired dishes. For something really special, book the Founder’s Cellar Experience in the hidden wine cave where guests dine underneath a custom-designed Chihuly sculpture crafted to represent the evolution of the winery.

The Sonora Room at Burrowing Owl Estate Winery

At Burrowing Owl Estate Winery you feel the care locals have for conservation — each aspect is dedicated to preserving and growing the local population of burrowing owls. The Sonora Room overlooks the 140-acre vineyard and features a seasonal menu filled with organic produce, artisan bread and cheeses, and thoughtfully prepared meats and seafood that highlight local farmers. The wine list rotates to include a selection of Burrowing Owl library wines no longer publicly available for sale alongside other Okanagan wines.

Best time to visit

Oliver Osoyoos Wine Country

Fall is bountiful in Oliver Osoyoos Wine Country. The sunny skies and mild temperatures make the perfect atmosphere for biking around the vineyards, getting out on the lake for some stand-up paddleboarding, and meandering through the vines of the approximately 50 vineyards.

And September is harvest season. “There’s melons, peaches, and apples. Tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers are coming alive,” Busmann said. “Then of course there’s wine harvest. On any day, you can go to a winery and get an impromptu interactive experience on the crush pad. Sometimes they’re sorting grapes, or pressing them — there is always something going on in September Including the annual Festival of the Grape.”

Don’t discount winter in Oliver Osoyoos though — many wineries put on special events from lighting up the vines, to mulled wine pop-ups, to fondue parties amid the backdrop of snow-capped vineyards. And the Half Corked Marathon in May brings all the Spring revelry.

How to get there

The Kelowna International Airport (one hour) and regional Penticton Airport (30 minutes) are the closest options to Oliver Osoyoos Wine Region. From there, most visitors rent a car and drive the picturesque route to Oliver, British Columbia. It’s also easily reached by car from major cities like Vancouver, and other parts of Canada. Because the vineyards are large and spread out, it’s best to have a car for getting around, though e-bikes are also available at most resorts and hotels. Oliver’s downtown is very walkable and has a number of coffee shops, boutiques, and restaurants.

If renting a car is not an option for you, there is a bus service that runs between Kelowna and Oliver. Mountain Man Mike’s can be booked for CAD 40 (INR 2,456) – CAD 55 (INR 3,377) and the journey takes roughly 2.5 hours. If you fly into Penticton, Mountain Man Mike’s runs routes to Oliver or you can grab a taxi (CAD 65 – CAD 80 or INR 3,989 – INR 4,910 for a 35-minute ride), or hop on the Line 40 bus (CAD 2 or INR 123 fare and 40-minute ride).

Another option for those heading to Phantom Creek Estate is flying in by private jet using the estate’s luxury partners.

Other not-to-be-missed wineries

Covert Farm and Winery

Since 1959, Covert Farms Family Estate has been setting the pace for organic, regenerative agriculture. Gene and Shelly Covert operate the fourth-generation, 650-acre organic farm, vineyard, and winery. “Wine starts on the farm, and Gene and Shelly have done a variety of things over my lifetime of living here that leads the pack as far as sustainable practices,” Busmann said. Educational and immersive experiences including tours around the property in the red 1952 truck restored by Gene’s mom, tastings of their award-winning wines, and fields of u-pick fruit and vegetables make Covert a must-stop.

vinAmité

This family-owned, decade-old winery has a secret weapon: Catherine Coulombe, the winemaker at vinAmité, is also a trained chef who puts together perfectly paired bites and charcuterie offerings in the wine lounge. Busmann added, “The wines that they’re doing are amazing. Their pinot gris stands out in a very large group of producers here, and their pinot noir which has faded from the region is delicious. The unique wines, locations and overall experience are just heartwarming,”

Nk’Mip Cellars

North America’s first Indigenous-owned and operated winery, led by Osoyoos nation member and winemaker Justin Hall, Nk’Mip Cellars presents the story of this place better than any other winery. Pioneers of riesling ice wine in the region, Nk’Mip has gone on to cultivate a portfolio of award-winning wines that reflect their dedication to preserving the land. “They kept their roots while growing, developing, and moving forward in the industry over the last 20 years,” Busmann said. “It’s a story that we don’t really see anywhere else in the world.”

Rust Wine Co.

Oliver Osoyoos Wine Country

Busmann calls them “New Kids on the Block,” even though the vineyard and the facility have been around since 1973. Like Oliver Osoyoos, Busmann said, “This one hasn’t quite been discovered yet, but they are getting lots of attention as their wines come online. Their zinfandel is especially impressive.” Rust Wine Co. features an outdoor patio, garden, and tasting room. Guests have the opportunity to submit photos that may become labels on bottles — artistic rust shots from all over British Columbia and beyond are poured over to find the shots that match specific varietals, and then the photographer’s name, subject, and location are printed on the back of the label.

Road 13 Vineyards

Rolling up to the Bavarian castle, you know you’re in for something different, and Road 13 Vineyards delivers. Plus, you can bring your pup along for the experience of chilling in their “Barking Lot” equipped with biscuits and cold water. Rows of wine grapes fan out below the vineyard patio where you can enjoy a variety of targeted tastings paired with their signature harvest boards.

How to get around

There’s no getting around it, you need to rent a car to get the full experience here. Kelowna International Airport has all the major car rental companies like Enterprise, Avis, Budget, and more. Penticton has Budget and National car rental kiosks. Once in Oliver, there are a number of e-bike rental shops, as well as e-bike wine safari tours. Busmann agreed a rental car is a must, “We don’t have the infrastructure for public transportation, but if you’re coming in the Spring, Summer, or Fall, you can enjoy the outdoors using e-bikes for short day trips. It’s physically beautiful riding or driving around the region.”

Don’t forget to download the Wine Country Digital Passport to help plan your winery tours and experiences. Another helpful tool for navigating the region is the Wines of BC Explorer App, which provides information on grapes grown, maps, wine pairings for dinner, and more.

There's A Real Town Called Santa Claus In The US — And It’s As Festive As It Soundshttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/in/destinations/north-america/guide-to-santa-claus-town-in-the-us/2023-11-26T06:30:21+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/in/?p=234899Santa claus town in US

Welcome to Santa Claus, Indiana: a real-life town that celebrates Christmas all year long. This town is jolly 365 days a year, with plenty of holiday-fuelled fun (including numerous Christmas-themed attractions to enjoy) — even in the heat of summer.

This town’s quirky story dates back to the 19th century when the town’s original name application was rejected, and its community decided on “Santa Claus” instead. The town’s first tourist attraction, Santa’s Candy Castle, opened in the 1930s — and the rest is history.

Santa Claus’s crown jewel is a theme park aptly named Holiday World, with lands dedicated to different holidays, a water park, and the most impressive collection of roller coasters in the area. This small town is also home to an official Santa Claus post office that draws in thousands of letters to Father Christmas from around the globe each year.

And it’s not all whimsy. Visitors can also walk in the footsteps of President Abraham Lincoln and enjoy the outdoors at Lincoln State Park between holiday-themed activities.

Here’s what you need to know before visiting Santa Claus, Indiana

Places to stay

Accommodation options include kitschy-themed hotels like Santa’s Lodge, one and two-bedroom cottages at Santa’s Lakeside Cottages, campsites and cabins at Sun Outdoors Lake Rudolph, and spacious home rentals like Mistletoe Manor.

Holiday World and Splashin’ Safari

The highlight for many is Holiday World, a theme park that dates back to the 1940s when it opened as Santa Claus Land. It’s grown throughout the years, expanding from solely a Christmas-themed land to include other holidays, like Halloween, the Fourth of July, and Thanksgiving. The family-owned park now offers an impressive line-up of award-winning roller coasters, but it has maintained a charming, small-town feel. Plus, fewer crowds, affordable prices, and friendly employees make it a great place for a  family excursion.

The Voyage, a high-speed wooden roller coaster, is a must for serious thrill seekers. And in the warmer months, check out Cheetah Chase, the world’s first launched water coaster, at Splashin’ Safari. The fun extends to food with the park’s signature blue ice cream (a Midwest favourite) and a bounty of holiday-inspired treats. Holiday World is typically open from May through October; check the theme park’s website for exact dates.

Other things to do

Lincoln State Park

Lincoln State Park is a calming oasis of over 2,000 acres of stunning scenery with trails, campsites, boat rentals, and picnic areas set along Lake Lincoln. Santa’s Candy Castle

Santa’s Candy Castle dates back to 1935, and it’s a can’t-miss stop when visiting. The shop offers a staggeringly large collection of candies, including vintage and rare sweet treats, as well as, homemade confections. It’s also known for a special beverage that fits right in with the town’s theme — frozen hot chocolate.

Santa Claus Museum & Village

Start your holiday-inspired trip with a visit to the Santa Claus Museum & Village. It’s home to the 1880 Santa Claus Church, a 22-foot-tall Santa Claus statue that dates to 1935, and the original Santa Claus Post Office. Explore the town’s origins through exhibits and artefacts you won’t find anywhere else, and don’t forget to write a letter to jolly Saint Nick while visiting.

As one of the newest additions to Santa Claus located just across the street from Holiday World, this brewery is pouring an ever-rotating lineup of suds handcrafted right in their on-site taproom. Beyond the beer, the brewery offers a menu of pub favourites, including wings, burgers, and its twist on pretzel nuggets, and reindeer balls.

Of course, Santa Claus is also a popular destination during the holiday season. Santa Claus Christmas Celebration takes place the first three weekends in December, adding merriment with drive-thru light displays, shopping experiences, chestnut roasting, meet and greets with Santa, and the Santa Claus Christmas Parade.

How to get there

Given its proximity to major cities in the US including Chicago, Louisville, and Cincinnati, it’s a popular road trip for families in the Midwest. If you fly, you’ll want to rent a car so you can get around.

This Caribbean Destination Is The No. 1 Winter Travel Spothttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/in/destinations/north-america/dominocan-republic-is-the-no-1-winter-travel-spot/2023-11-24T10:30:02+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/in/?p=234748Winter travel

Globetrotters across the world say they plan to travel this upcoming season, according to Tripadvisor’s Winter Travel Index, released recently. While most of the respondents say they plan to travel for specific reasons like winter festivals, skiing, and cultural holidays, some plan to go off to far-flung destinations to enjoy time for themselves too. That includes heading to Tripadvisor’s top trending destination, Las Galeras, in the Dominican Republic.

Here’s why Las Galeras is the top winter travel destination

“This season, we’re seeing Americans confident in taking bigger trips. About half plan to travel more than they did last winter, and they are more likely to take a long trip (5+ nights),” Alice Jong, senior research analyst at Tripadvisor, said in a statement provided to Travel + Leisure. “Price and weather top the list of hesitations about travel, while COVID-19 has dropped to a more moderate concern. The bottom line is the vast majority (73 percent) agree that travel is extremely important to them, and they’ll prioritise it this season and into 2024.”

So, how much more, exactly, are people planning to travel this winter? According to the findings, the majority (76 percent) said they would take one to two trips, while almost a quarter (24 percent) plan to take three or more. And though the findings note that domestic travel still reigns supreme, with 68 percent of travellers noting they plan to stay in the country this winter, one-third of respondents said they plan to travel internationally.

[inline_related_article article_id="234483,231147"]

Tripadvisors report also noted that many of those international trips will occur in the Caribbean, including the aforementioned number one trending destination, Las Galeras in the Dominican Republic.

The remote fishing village in the Caribbean nation is well-known and loved for its rugged landscape, awe-inspiring white sand beaches that flow into the crystalline sea, and fantastic land-based adventures like horseback riding and ATVing through the forests.

The second-most popular destination, Fasmendhoo, Maldives, echoes people’s desires for a tropical getaway. It’s followed by a city escape in Hong Kong in third, the town of Frederiksted in the US Virgin Islands in fourth, and rounding out the top five, is a particular favourite here at T+L, Herradura.

House on Fire Ruin

Considered the first archaeological site located along the trail in the South Fork of Mule Canyon, House of Fire Ruin is stunning, to say the least. The picturesque flames above the house are best captured post a hike in the late morning, a time when the lights reflect off the opposite walls of the canyon. Past this, several additional archaeological sites dot the space — including some that are nestled high in the canyon walls. The trailhead for this hike is located on County Road 263 near mile marker 102. Newspaper Rock

One of the largest and most easily accessible petroglyph panels in Utah, Newspaper Rock is located in the Indian Creek Unit of Bears Ears National Monument. One of the biggest wonders to see in Utah is the twinkling heavens above. Home to one of the darkest night skies in the world, Utah’s Canyon Country has five dark sky parks and places to choose from. Natural Bridges National Monument, designated the world’s first International Dark Sky Park, has three of the world’s largest natural stone bridges that, when made a silhouette to the night sky, make for a beautiful spectacle. Canyonlands National Park puts the spotlight on preserving celestial sights and starry skies, while Goosenecks State Park doubles as a small campground for sleeping under one of the darkest night skies in the USA. Rainbow Bridge National Monument, a designated Dark-Sky Sanctuary, boasts of being the tallest and longest natural bridge in the world created in the glacial period. Hovenweep National Monument, a Gold-tier Dark-Sky Park, promises some of the darkest night skies that offer a monumental experience no one can forget.

The Sarasota Modern

Located in the Rosemary District, The Sarasota Modern is an architectural stunner. “The hotel pays homage to Paul Rudolph, a pioneer of the Sarasota School of Architecture during the years he lived in Sarasota in the 1950s,” says Hauser. Less than four miles (6.43 km) from Sarasota Bradenton International Airport, the hotel comes with complimentary bicycles, a plunge pool, a hot tub, and a pool.

The oceanfront property is not situated directly on the sand, but it does feature a complimentary shuttle that transports guests three miles (4.82 km) to the shore.

Best things to do

Longboat Key

There’s a reason why Travel + Leisure readers ranked Longboat Key as one of their favourite islands in the US this year. Lido Beach and Siesta Key are also fantastic options, boasting fine white sand and stunning views.

Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium

Located on City Island, the Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium is a world-class indoor/outdoor facility that houses manatees, sharks, sea turtles, otters, and more than 100 other marine species. The space offers touch pools and viewable labs that allow guests to peer into the working world of the researchers on site.

Marie Selby Botanical Gardens

The 45-acre Marie Selby Botanical Gardens has two campuses. The downtown Sarasota campus features 15 acres along Sarasota Bay, including a bayfront mangrove walkway. This space will also soon be home to the world’s first net-positive rooftop restaurant, featuring an edible garden and plantings that will showcase some of the plants researchers at the Selby study.

The Ringling

sarasota florida
Image Credit: Jacqueline Dole/Travel + Leisure

The Ringling is an expansive 66-acre estate made up of several museums and attractions. Guests can wander the property and visit the Ca’ d’zan, a Venetian-inspired waterfront mansion that was once the home of John and Mable Ringling. The Circus Museum features the world’s largest collection of miniatures — more than 42,000 pieces that give guests a peek into the history and early days of The Ringling Circus. The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art consists of the original 21 galleries that opened to the public in 1932, a James Turrell installation, and other travelling and resident exhibitions.

The Bay

Outdoor enthusiasts can spot manatees on a Siesta Key kayak tour and enjoy the shore along one of six islands lining Sarasota’s coastline. The newly opened Bay makes the most of Sarasota’s public space by transforming 53 acres of city-owned land into an expansive park with a full schedule of activities, from free kayak tours to outdoor movies under the stars.

Sarasota Ballet

There’s no shortage of live shows to enjoy in Sarasota — the area is part of Florida’s Cultural Coast, after all. Guests here can visit the Sarasota Ballet, the only professional ballet company on the Gulf Coast; the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe, one of only two professional black theatre companies in Florida; and the Sarasota Opera, which is located in one of the most historic venues in the city.

Discover Sarasota Tours

Discover Sarasota offers 90-minute trolley tours multiple times a day that acquaint visitors with the city’s layout, history, neighbourhoods, and more than 48 places of interest.

Best Restaurants

Owen’s Fish Camp

Located in a cottage built in 1923, Owen’s Fish Camp specialises in fresh seafood and Southern classics. The space includes a lush outdoor courtyard and is even home to a banyan tree that was given to the restaurant’s namesake — Owen Burns, a prominent Sarasota developer — by Thomas Edison.

Walt’s Fish Market

Walt’s Fish Market is a Sarasota institution that serves up conch chowder, stone crab, and a menu full of freshly caught seafood straight from the Gulf.

Whitney’s

Located in a converted 1950s garage, Whitney’s is a delight for modern design enthusiasts. It offers an all-day menu, weekend brunch, and live music.

O’Leary’s Tiki Bar & Grill

Sink your feet in the sand and enjoy a tropical drink at O’leary’s Tiki Bar & Grill. With live music daily, this low-key waterfront spot in Bayfront Park is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the sunset.

Best time to visit

The fall is the best time to visit Sarasota for great weather, smaller crowds, and lower humidity. While hurricane season in Florida runs from June through November, it peaks between August and September, so keep this in mind when planning a trip.

“My favourite month to be here is November. The weather is ideal, the crowds are minimal, and everything is open.” says Hauser. Duggan echoes this sentiment, saying, “I’m a big fan of fall because you still have warm days with the occasional breezy day in between.”

How to get there

The Sarasota Bradenton International Airport, located just three miles (4.82 km) from downtown, is the most convenient destination for quick transport to and from the city. Sarasota is under two hours south of Tampa International Airport and 2.5 hours west of Orlando International Airport — keep in mind that traffic in the area fluctuates greatly throughout the day, so the closer the airport, the better.

If you’re planning to drive to Sarasota, consider finding accommodations with parking. The city can experience a good deal of traffic, and between public transportation and ride-share services, it’s often more convenient to skip driving yourself.

Neighbourhoods to visit

Downtown Sarasota

Downtown Sarasota is the centre of the city’s arts district, with a number of galleries, theatres, and museums. The area hosts a weekly farmers market, bakeries, and Bayfront Park, the best place to watch the sunset in Sarasota.

Siesta Key

sarasota florida

Siesta Key is a barrier island off the coast of Sarasota, best known for its award-winning beach. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy bike tours, boat rentals, snorkelling, and more.

St. Armands Circle

St. Armands Circle began as a passion project of John for Mable Ringling, who wanted to build a destination within the community where visitors and residents could shop, live, and thrive. True to the city’s roots, Ringling used circus elephants to haul the timbers that were used to construct the causeway and bridge to connect St. Armands Key to the mainland.

How to get around

Unless you’re driving to Sarasota, consider skipping the rental car here. “Avoid parking and driving if you can — Ubers are easy to get and reduce all the stress. There’s a lot of traffic in season and finding parking is a challenge.” says Hauser.

In addition to ride-share services, The Bay Runner is a complimentary open-air trolley that provides service seven days a week. It runs until midnight, with stops between Lido Key, St. Armands Circle, and downtown Sarasota.

Sarasota County also offers a bus system, SCAT. While the bus has a slightly limited schedule, routes offer stops near can’t-miss attractions, like the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, Lido Beach, and the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. Visitors can purchase one-way tickets in addition to one-day, seven-day, or 30-day passes.

The Sunshine State attracts more than 130 million visitors per year, and a big part of the appeal is its natural (and manmade) beauty. From tropical islands to thick forests to astoundingly clear freshwater springs, there are a lot of beautiful places to visit in Florida. Luckily, with warm weather and ample sun year-round, there’s no bad time to visit.

As a fourth-generation Floridian, this writer is well aware of the state’s treasures, both popular and lesser-known, and I’m happy to spread the love.

We also asked Florida blogger Amanda Conkel of The Wandering Conk for her favourite spots around the state and tapped Dana Young, president and CEO of Visit Florida, for her insight. As a sixth-generation Floridian born and raised in Florida’s capital city, Tallahassee, Young knows a thing or two about Florida tourism and the state’s most beautiful spots.

Here are 26 beautiful places in Florida, from national parks to island towns.

The most beautiful places in Florida

Three Sisters Springs

There are a lot of stunning springs in Florida, but Three Sisters Springs in Crystal River holds a special place in this Floridian travel writer’s heart as the site of many fond memories of scalloping in the summer and swimming with manatees in the winter. The springs, accessible only via private boat or kayak, provide refuge to more than 150 manatees during cold snaps. Book a clear kayak tour with my friends at Get Up And Go Kayaking Crystal River for the full experience.

Miami Beach Art Deco Historic District

Of course, South Beach is one of the most beautiful places in Florida, but Miami Beach’s historic art deco district is worth exploring off-sand.

Famous for the plethora of pastel Art Deco dreams and as the former home of Italian fashion designer Gianni Versace (you can stay or book a table for dinner at his mansion), the Art Deco Historic District has the largest concentration of this classic 1920s and 1930s architectural style in the nation and has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1979. A walking tour is the best way to take in a sampling of the 800 designated historic buildings.

Boneyard Beach

Named for the giant bleached oak skeletons lining this mile-long (1.6 km) stretch of sand in Big Talbot Island State Park, Boneyard Beach is a must-visit detour from nearby Jacksonville. Between the driftwood “sculptures” and the 30-foot bluffs along the shoreline, you may find yourself wondering if you’ve been transported out of Florida entirely.

Everglades National Park

Beautiful places in Florida
Image Credit: Stephanie Pollak/Travel + Leisure

There are few places in the world as wild and ecologically significant as Everglades National Park, which is why this 1.5-million-acre subtropical wilderness is one of the best places to visit in Florida. This biologically diverse landscape homes hundreds of species of birds and probably more alligators than you ever hoped to see. Take it all in on an airboat tour.

Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens

Delray Beach might be the last place you’d expect to find a veritable portal to Japan, but that’s exactly what awaits at the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens. With humble beginnings as a Japanese farming colony more than a century ago, Morikami today spans 200 acres of nature trails and pine forests, with 16 groomed acres of Japanese gardens, strolling paths, a world-class bonsai collection, and koi ponds surrounding the two museum buildings.

Flagler College

Beautiful places in Florida

With Spanish Renaissance architecture, more than 450 years of history, and tons of things to do, St. Augustine is one of Florida’s most beautiful cities — and with its Tiffany glass windows and ornate murals, the Flagler College campus is an outstanding centrepiece.

“As the longest continually inhabited European-founded city in the US, St. Augustine is filled with historical landmarks and architecture,” Young adds. “Some cultural highlights include Ponce de Leon’s Fountain of Youth and Castillo de San Marcos, as well as outdoor adventures including kayaking, fishing, and eco-tours.”

Conkel agrees, recommending a visit between November and January to see St. Augustine at its most magical — during Nights of Lights. “It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen,” she says. “Each building, rooftop, and street is even more magical than before. Throughout Nights of Lights, they have lit-up boat parades and other weekly events.”

Walt Disney World — During the Holidays

Image Credit: Matt Stroshane/Walt Disney World

Yes, we all know that Walt Disney World is built to be picture-perfect — it’s the “Most Magical Place on Earth,” after all — but to see Disney in all its glory, go when the parks are all decked out for the holidays. Highlights include Halloween, Christmas, and the EPCOT International Flower and Garden Festival when the spring flowers are in full bloom.

The Dalí

Beautiful places in Florida

If there’s a cooler-looking building in Florida than The Dalí, I’d like to know about it. While the contents of the Salvador Dalí Museum are plenty interesting, the exterior architecture — a free-form geodesic glass bubble erupting from 18-inch-thick walls — is worth a visit in its own right. Plus, you can stay at another one of Florida’s most beautiful places, The Vinoy — a pretty-in-pink historic hotel — while you’re in St. Petersburg.

Dry Tortugas National Park

A national park that’s 99 percent underwater, 70 miles (112.65 km) from civilisation, and accessible only by seaplane or boat? Only in Florida. Pay a visit to Dry Tortugas National Park and prepare to be amazed.

Westgate River Ranch Resort & Rodeo

Beautiful places in Florida

Whether you’re there to glamp in a covered wagon or boot-scoot-boogie at the Saturday night rodeo, the largest dude ranch east of the Mississippi is a glimpse at the beauty of Old Florida, with massive live oak trees, swampland, and wide-open spaces.

The Breakers

I’m admittedly biased, but I firmly believe the Palm Beaches represent the most beautiful parts of Florida, and nowhere is this spirit captured more elegantly than The Breakers, a Gilded Age jewel stretching 140 acres along the Atlantic shoreline of Palm Beach. From the ornate lobby to the perfectly manicured grounds, the entire historic resort is a visual feast.

Weeki Wachee

Beautiful places in Florida

“Kayaking the Weeki Wachee River from Weeki Wachee State Park is my number one recommendation when visiting Florida,” Conkel says. “The water is consistently the most perfect blue-green colour year-round, and it’s an easy and relaxing activity because you essentially float down the river with the current. You’ll usually see a few manatees and tons of fish. It’s a great activity any time of year as the water is a constant 72 degrees (22.22 degrees Celsius).”

Whatever you do, don’t miss the live mermaid show on a visit to Weeki Wachee — a fantastical tradition since 1947. Mermaid shows take place at 11 am and 3 pm daily. Seating is first-come, first-served.

The West Palm Beach Green Market

There’s a reason the West Palm Beach Green Market is repeatedly ranked among the best farmers markets in the nation — with 125 fresh and funky vendors, this scenically situated market is a weekly pitstop for locals and a must-do itinerary item for visitors. Out-of-towners can also take a food tour of the market, and if you go at Christmastime, look out for a 35-foot sand tree capping off the festivities. (Need somewhere to stay? My West Palm Beach Airbnb is located nearby.)

Sunrise Rocket Launch at Cape Canaveral

Beautiful places in Florida

Anyone familiar with the Space Coast may be raising an eyebrow at its inclusion on a list of the most beautiful places in Florida, but a sunrise launch from the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station or Kennedy Space Center will take your breath away. Bundling up on the beach to marvel at a rocket blasting through a colourful sky is truly an only-in-Florida experience.

[myaffiliate type="normal" button_name="Shop the best travel experiences here " url="https://experiences.travelandleisureasia.com/" align="center" class="affiliate-five"]

Key West

There are a lot of beautiful places and unique things to do in the Florida Keys (America’s only private island resort, anyone?), but Key West rightfully tops most visitors’ lists.

“Located at the southernmost point in the US, Key West is known for its lively nightlife, historic sites, conch-style architecture, and water sports,” says Young. “As the sun sets, Mallory Square welcomes jugglers, musicians, and acrobats, and the streets are filled with famous pubs and restaurants serving some island specialties.”

Go during the low season for the best prices and lightest crowds.

Bok Tower Gardens

Beautiful places in Florida
Image Credit: John Greim/LightRocket via Getty Images

Located atop Iron Mountain, one of the highest points of Florida at 295 feet above sea level, Bok Tower Gardens spans 250 acres of contemplative garden and bird sanctuary. This central Florida gem was established in the 1920s and remains devoted to the mission of Edward Bok today: “Wherever your lives may be cast, make the world a bit better or more beautiful because you have lived in it.” The singing tower, the centrepiece of the gardens, offers a rare chance to hear a carillon in action.

Blowing Rocks Preserve

Conkel considers Blowing Rocks Preserve, located in quiet Hobe Sound, a hidden gem of Florida. “Here you’ll find the coast lined with Anastasia limestone,” she says. “During high tide, the ocean creates a show as it blows up through the rocks. At low tide, you can walk on the shoreline underneath the limestone cliffs. It’s something you don’t typically see in Florida. When visiting, be sure to take a stroll on the Dune Trail through the tunnel of sea grapes.”

Ocala/Marion County

Beautiful places in Florida

While most Florida tourists head to nearby Orlando for the theme parks, Ocala (which recently debuted a USD 800 million (INR 66,59,76,00,000) resort) has plenty to offer outdoor enthusiasts.

“Ocala and Marion County boast miles of untainted nature, making it a great destination to experience natural wonders, outdoor adventure, world-class sporting facilities, and culture,” Young says. “Visitors can take in the sights as they kayak, camp, go tubing, hike, bike, or zipline through canyons — yes, Florida actually has canyons!”

She adds, “Officially named the Horse Capital of the World, Ocala is home to more horses than anywhere else in the country, producing some of the finest champions in the sport. It’s also home to national and international equestrian events and competitions, including multiple competition series at the World Equestrian Center.”

Don’t miss the nearby Devil’s Den historic spring for another beautiful central Florida spot.

Vizcaya Museum & Gardens

Image Credit: Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

Most people go to Miami for the beaches and nightlife, but Vizcaya Museum & Gardens is well worth a visit. This National Historic Landmark is a 1916 waterfront estate with 32 rooms and 10 acres of formal gardens, a trip to the Gilded Age just minutes from downtown Miami.

Destin

Beautiful places in Florida

“Located along Florida’s Gulf Coast, Destin is an ideal destination for the whole family, as it has various family-friendly resorts and vacation homes to choose from,” Young shares. “Destin is home to some of the world’s most beautiful and unique beaches, known for its soft, sugar-white sand and glistening emerald waters.”

The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art

The Ringling Museum in Sarasota is a sight to see,” according to Conkel. “Between the bayfront gardens, Ca’d’Zan, and the actual museum, you can spend an entire day there and not see everything. My favourite time of year to visit is toward the end of spring when the rose garden and multitude of flowers are in bloom.”

For another beautiful Florida spot, drive an hour south to Boca Grande, named America’s best small beach town by T+L in 2023.

Okefenokee Swamp

Straddling the Florida–Georgia border, the Okefenokee Swamp spans 438,000 acres of shallow, peat-filled wetland and is home to many threatened and endangered species — plus a population of around 15,000 alligators.

Tampa

Image Credit: Michela Sieman/Travel + Leisure

“With a mix of historic landmarks, a vibrant culture infused with Hispanic flavours, lively districts, year-round pro sports offerings, and a thriving culinary scene, there’s something here in Tampa for everyone,” Young, a Tampa resident herself, shares. “Experience cigar rolling or a flamenco show in Ybor City; visit the parks, restaurants, and bars alongside Tampa Riverwalk; ride a thrill-coaster at Busch Gardens; or simply treat your tastebuds to one of the city’s numerous Michelin-recognised culinary options.”

There’s a reason Tampa is listed as one of the best places to live in Florida.

Washington Oaks Gardens State Park

Located in northern Florida, Washington Oaks Gardens State Park is most famous for its picturesque oak hammock, reflection ponds, and formal gardens, which house impressive displays of both native and non-native plants. Make sure to leave time to stroll the park’s Atlantic shoreline, which is marked by coquina rock formations and tidal pools.

This Tiny Mountain Town In Washington Looks Like A Snowglobe Every Winterhttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/in/destinations/north-america/this-tiny-mountain-town-in-washington-looks-like-a-snowglobe-every-winter/2023-11-10T10:30:15+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/in/?p=232006Leavenworth

If someone showed you a photo of Leavenworth, Washington, there’s a good chance you’d mistake it for a small town in Germany. Alpine-style storefronts, twinkling lights, and signs touting sausages, soft pretzels, and hefty beer steins create a magical, European-inspired atmosphere, one that was first brought to Leavenworth in the 1960s.

Following the rerouting of the railroad in the 1920s — and the ensuing hardships created by a lack of tourism — the town switched gears. Several decades later, local leaders proposed turning Leavenworth into a complete Bavarian experience to inspire travellers to visit the area.

Today, the nearly 2,400-person town continues to draw millions of tourists each year, most of whom are looking for a dose of Leavenworth’s mountain charm. “While downtown is, without a doubt, a highlight for visitors, what really draws locals and tourists alike to this Bavarian-themed destination in the Cascade Mountains is its natural surroundings and limitless recreation opportunities,” says Shila Reeves, a Leavenworth resident and the box office manager at Icicle Creek Center for the Arts. During the warmer months, hiking, biking, and rafting on the Wenatchee River are all excellent ways to spend your time; come winter, it’s all about snow sports and the holidays — but more on that later.

“Leavenworth is a great getaway for families and couples alike,” says Robin John, the manager at Posthotel Leavenworth. Its “year-round attractions, festivals, and special events (can be) enjoyed by guests of all ages,” whether they’re hoping to take part in the Oktoberfest festivities in the fall, see the Christmas lights in December, or stroll through the town’s picturesque streets in the summertime.

  • PostHotel Leavenworth is the place to stay for a relaxing, wellness-focused getaway.
  • Andreas Keller Restaurant offers classic German fare like schnitzel and sausages.
  • Admire the town’s famous Bavarian-inspired architecture with an easy stroll or an e-bike tour.
  • Visit during the holidays to see Leavenworth decked out in twinkling lights, and stop by the reindeer farm for a festive photo op.
  • Or plan an autumn trip to take advantage of colourful foliage and Oktoberfest celebrations.

Travellers who prefer to lean into Leavenworth’s mountain town identity will appreciate the “high-end rustic and very comfortable,” according to Reeves, accommodations at Sleeping Lady Mountain Resort. Made up of a cluster of treehouse-style cabins, the property boasts an ideal location by Icicle Creek and incredible views of the Cascade Range. Bookend one of your days exploring Leavenworth with a massage at the spa or hot chocolate by the firepit.

Best things to do

Explore downtown Leavenworth

Image Credit: Wolfgang Kaehler/LightRocket via Getty Images

“My favourite thing to do downtown is to walk through the streets during a [quieter] hour, either in the early morning or evening,” says Reeves. Her ideal itinerary involves grabbing a coffee, tea, or cocoa from a cafe — try J5 Coffee or Argonaut Coffee & Biscuits — doing some window shopping, and “just enjoying the lights and magic that is downtown Leavenworth.”

Embark on a guided e-bike tour

You’ll cover more ground on two wheels versus on foot, so a bike tour is one of the best ways to see as much of Leavenworth as possible. Bavarian E-Bike Tours takes visitors on a 16-mile (25.74 km) ride through downtown Leavenworth and by Icicle Creek and the historic Leavenworth Ski Hill.

Go on a hike

“There are so many stunning views of our valley, and getting out in the fresh mountain air is wonderful any time of the year,” says John. If you’re in Leavenworth in the summer, she recommends “hiking to one of the alpine lakes,” like Colchuck Lake or Icicle Lake. Reeves also notes Leavenworth’s access to nature and the beauty of the river trails at Blackbird Island and Enchantment Park: “These trails are easily accessible from downtown… It’s a very family-friendly stroll through nature and open year-round.”

Float (or paddle) the Wenatchee River

Leavenworth

In the summer, Leavenworth serves as a jumping-off point for all types of water-based adventures. “There are a handful of companies that rent out tubes, kayaks, or stand-up paddleboards for you to get out on the [Wenatchee] River,” says Reeves. She shares that the river is relatively gentle closer to town, but visitors should “still use caution.”

“If you seek a bit more adrenaline, there are also whitewater guide companies that will take you on rafting trips a little further downstream,” she adds.

Spend a day tasting Leavenworth’s wine, beer, and cider

Along with Bavarian architecture, German-inspired food, and stunning mountain scenery, Leavenworth is known for its variety of wineries and tasting rooms. If you prefer beer, stop by Doghaus Brewery; for wine, there are Silvara Cellars, Icicle Ridge Winery, or Usurious Wines. Another particularly unique tasting experience can be found at Bushel & Bee Taproom, which has a rotating selection of 12 craft ciders and meads on tap.

Holiday season in Leavenworth

As Thanksgiving comes to an end, the town of Leavenworth transitions into the holiday season. While many festive shops and activities can be enjoyed all year round — including the Leavenworth Nutcracker Museum, The Gingerbread Factory, and Kris Kringl, a Christmas store filled with gifts and home decor — there are several seasonal happenings that only occur in the winter months.

Village of Lights Christmastown

Twinkling lights are the star of the show in Leavenworth during the colder months. “Seeing kids’ faces as the town is lit up with Christmas lights — and feeling the excitement and holiday spirit of everyone in town — makes winter in Leavenworth so special,” says John. This year, from November 24 to December 24, visitors can take part in all things Christmastown — carolers, photo opportunities, gift-wrapping stations, gingerbread houses, and more. Additional details on the 2023 Christmastown are expected to be posted here.

Leavenworth Reindeer Farm

The Leavenworth Reindeer Farm is open most of the year, but its special “Celebrate the Season” Reindeer Farm Experience is only offered in November and December. Meet and feed the herd, take some photos — with the reindeer and with Santa — then fill up with Norwegian potato lefse washed down with seasonal drinks.

Icicle Creek Center for the Arts Holiday Shows

The Icicle Creek Center for the Arts calendar is filled with shows and performances during the holiday season. In 2023, the lineup includes llluminate the Night: a Winter-Themed Guided Concert and Magical Strings Presents: Celtic Yuletide. “Come out to the beautiful Snowy Owl Theatre — cradled in the valley right below some of our most magnificent mountain peaks — sip on a cup of cocoa… and let Leavenworth’s finest entertain you and put you in the mood to enjoy the holidays,” says Reeves.

Sleigh Rides with Leavenworth Sleigh Rides or Icicle Outfitters

Make sure you dress warmly for a sleigh ride with either Icicle Outfitters or Leavenworth Sleigh Rides. “The sleighs and horses are beautiful, the guides are friendly and knowledgeable about the history of the valley, and there is a nice little stop by a campfire where guests partake in a cup of cider or cocoa and visit with other passengers,” says Reeves. “Plus, there’s just something undeniably magical about gliding across the snow in a horse-drawn sleigh,” she adds.

Winter Karneval

Leavenworth

Leavenworth’s cosy and charming festivities don’t end with the arrival of the new year. In fact, Winter Karneval extends the season by honouring the German tradition of “Fasching,” the period before Lent. Ice carving, fireworks, and live entertainment are expected each weekend in January, but be sure to check the official website for more details on the 2024 Winter Karneval.

Best Restaurants

Yodelin Broth Company

Yodelin Broth Company is, hands down, the local’s favourite place to dine and meet friends. They have delicious food, friendly staff, [and] a nice atmosphere with indoor and outdoor dining options… overlooking the river, Blackbird Island, and surrounding mountains options,” says Reeves. As far as entrees go, expect dishes like a wild salmon rice bowl, a sweet potato báhn mì, and a variety of made-from-scratch bone broth soups.

Andreas Keller Restaurant

If you’re “seeking out a traditional German experience,” John recommends Andreas Keller for “their Wiener schnitzel and spaetzle.” The family-owned restaurant has been open since 1989, and most nights are accented by live German music.

Larch

Both John and Reeves named Larch as one of the best restaurants in Leavenworth. “Their handmade pasta, arancini, seasonally themed menu, and creative drinks — both alcoholic and non — will leave you feeling full and very satisfied,” says Reeves, who also says visitors should “make reservations well in advance as they often fill up.”

München Haus

“No visit can be complete without enjoying a brat, sausage, or warm pretzel from the München Haus,” says Reeves. “Sit and soak up their outdoor atmosphere and enjoy a locally brewed beer from their sister company, Icicle Brewing Co., or take it to go and have a casual lunch while walking around town.”

Best time to visit

Winter is the best time to visit Leavenworth, particularly if you want to see the Bavarian-themed town in all its glittering glory — but, according to Reeves, you don’t have to brave the peak holiday season crowds in order to get the full experience. “To avoid the crowds, but still enjoy the holiday lights of Leavenworth, come anytime from Thanksgiving through the last day of February,” she says. Autumn in Leavenworth also has its own draw. Cider tasting, foliage peeping, and Oktoberfest celebrations fill the calendar in late September and October.

How to get there

For most travellers, flying into Seattle–Tacoma International Airport (SEA) is the easiest way to reach Leavenworth. From there, you’ll need to rent a car to drive the two hours — or, there’s the option to fly from SEA to Pangborn Memorial Airport (EAT) in Wenatchee. Alaska Airlines operates a once-a-day flight to and from the smaller airport, which is about 30 minutes away from Leavenworth. Shuttles and taxis are available upon arrival. Those who prefer to travel by train can also book a ticket from Seattle to Leavenworth via Amtrak.

How to get around

A car will be helpful to get to Leavenworth and explore the surrounding area, but it’s not necessary while in town. “Downtown Leavenworth is best experienced by foot,” says John.
“Front Street is a walking street, lined with shops, restaurants, and tasting rooms.”
