Adventure Awaits in Sydney and New South Wales

Head North

Begin your adventure holiday with hiking trails in and around Sydney. The Bondi to Coogee Walk is dotted with Sydney’s iconic sights along the way. When at Bondi beach, sign up for a quick surfing lesson. A short ferry ride across the harbour, head to Manly for The Spit to Manly Walk—another coastal stretch near the state capital—promises a mix of bush and brushland, picturesque bays, along with aboriginal rock engravings. An hour’s drive north of the city, make time to visit Glenworth Valley Outdoor Adventures. Located in the Central Coast region, this 3,000- acre unspoiled wilderness—credited as Australia’s largest horse-riding centre—is ideal for guided rides, as well as to hire horses for solo adventures. Those looking for fast-paced action can strap on to one of the world’s longest and fastest rollercoaster-style ziplines at TreeTops Crazy Rider in Ourimbah State Forest.

Continue further north towards Port Stephens for quad biking adventures at the Stockton Bright Sand Dunes or go scuba diving alongside bottlenose dolphins. Make a pitstop to swim with grey nurse sharks at Fish Rock Cave or enjoy whitewater rafting on the Nymboida River, before venturing further north to Byron Bay where one of the must-dos is the Cape Byron Walking Track where you can enjoy spectacular coastal views while you hike through rainforest, beach, grassland and clifftops. Byron Bay is also famous for skydiving—enjoy views of the most eastern point of the continent from up to 15,000 feet!

Southern Sojourns

On the southern side of Sydney, more adventures await. Start with Grand Pacific Drive from Sydney to Wollongong, which passes through Royal National Park and over Sea Cliff Bridge. Stop by Jervis Bay Marine Park—a park located only two hours away from the metropolis—for swimming, snorkelling, fishing, and stand-up paddle boarding.

Alternatively, Illawarra Fly Treetop Adventures in Southern Highlands offers one of Australia’s popular rainforest canopy experiences. Those with more time on hand can attempt Six Foot Trek, a three-day 46-kilometrelong trek best reserved for experienced hikers; or Five Mile mountain bike trail with wall rides, flowing bridges, and a pump track.

Heading west from Sydney? Visit Blue Mountains. These UNESCO World Heritage-listed landscapes are ideal for trekking, rock climbing, and abseiling. Squeeze in a ride to the edge of the Grose Wilderness on the Burramoko cycle trail or escape to the mainland to marvel at the world’s southernmost coral reef at Lord Howe Island Marine Park.
