Chasing Dubai's Winter Magic: Skiing, Dune-Bashing, And Other Unforgettable Adventureshttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/in/destinations/middle-east/winter-in-dubai-adventures-like-skydiving-dune-bashing-you-must-try/2023-11-16T08:30:53+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/in/?p=232510dubai adventure

Home to the world’s tallest building, the world’s most luxurious hotel, rip-roaring theme parks, and a culinary landscape dotted with Michelin stars, Dubai is a city that is synonymous with gilded getaways. While the Dubai experience is consistently splendid, it reaches its pinnacle when temperatures take a dip during the winter season.

As opposed to the typical four-season pattern observed by most countries, Dubai basks in sunshine around the year. Some locals may even contest that the Gulf Tiger has only two seasons: hot and hotter. But if you’re keen on dune-bashing and flyboarding under gentle sunshine and cool breeze, winter months are the ideal time to take flight. In this article, discover edge-of-the-seat winter adventures, the best Dubai destinations to hit up during winter, and more.

Winter months in Dubai

In Dubai, winter extends from mid-to-late December and continues to comfort until late March. The lowest temperatures dip to around 12.2 degrees Celsius and the hottest days in winter hit 25 degrees Celsius. Typically, January is the coolest month with an average temperature of 19.4 degrees Celsius, accompanied by relentless rainfall. Ideally, the months right before and after peak winter — November and early April — are unmatched for sightseeing and soaking up the winter sun.

Hop on a quad bike, drift through the mystical deserts, and admire the sand’s golden glow and limitless expanse of Dubai as the 4×4 vehicle freewheels down the dunes. Whether you choose a morning tour, an evening escapade, or the excitement of a midnight safari, each experience offers glimpses of local dance performances, camel rides, and exploration of Bedouin markets. The overnight safari raises the bar with spectacular sunset and sunrise views, belly dancing, tanoura performances with Arabian music, and a wholesome dinner buffet. Some travel agencies also couple sand skiing with dune-bashing for a comprehensive desert experience.

Sandboarding

Witness the desert’s version of snowboarding amidst the majestic dunes of Dubai. Although the sport initially seems simple, we recommend tying up with licensed experts for a safe and cherishable experience. The teams will scout the best sand dunes for you and also provide the necessary equipment. Among the best places for sandboarding are Al Badayer, also known as the Red Dune, along with the Lahbab Desert and Al Qudra. Sandboarding is a family-friendly activity that everyone can enjoy. The only rule of thumb is to practice on humble slopes before resorting to the steeper dunes.

Microlighting

Flying in a microlight is a no-brainer for thrill-seekers. We recommend the Jazirah Aviation Club at Ras Al Khaimah for a bucket-list experience. After an initial introduction and briefing, set foot in the cockpit of the two-seater microlight. The experienced pilot will fly you over Ras Al Khaimah’s coastal belt and sweeping cityscape. Depending on the package, the ride will last anywhere between 30 minutes to an hour.

A dive master as well as an instructor will closely supervise every group of divers. If you’re a certified diver, indulge in the underwater escapades at your disposal. For those who don’t have a certification, fret not, you can partake in the adventure after completing a short Scuba Diving Program with Al Boom Diving, a partner at the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo.

Skydiving

Brace yourself for a gravity-defying free fall from 13,000 feet over the spell-binding Palm Jumeirah. As your parachute springs open, admire the Arabian waters and cityscapes from up above. This heart-pumping experience at Skydive Dubai should be on top of your list. In addition to the free fall, adventure-seekers can also opt for a gyrocopter ride, and advanced alternatives like tandem skydiving and solo skydiving. Alternatively, iFly Mirdif offers indoor skydiving within a 10-metre-long, double vertical glass tunnel. Float over the gust of wind generated from the bottom and, depending on your comfort level, the instructor will help you pocket some spins and flips, which also make for great pictures.

The Best Times To Visit Turkey For Pleasant Weather, Lower Prices, And Beach Dayshttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/in/destinations/middle-east/best-times-to-visit-turkey-for-pleasant-weather-lower-prices/2023-10-13T04:30:35+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/in/?p=226216best times to visit Turkey

A crossroads of cultures, history, and climate, Turkey offers a little bit of something for everyone. Visitors are drawn to the rich history and architecture of Istanbul, the beaches of the Mediterranean coast, the adventure of the central mountains, the food and festivals throughout, and so much more.

“As a country nestled on two continents — Europe and Asia — Turkey attracts visitors from all over the globe with its blend of ancient history, vibrant culture, and delectable cuisine,” says Mina Agnos, president of Travelive and a Travel + Leisure A-List advisor. “Turkey is a destination that can be explored any time of year, but spring and autumn would be the best times to visit, with mild temperatures, favourable weather, and gorgeous colours.”

Read on if you’re ready to discover more about the best times to visit Turkey, as well as what each time of year has in store.

The best times to visit Turkey

Best time to visit Turkey for smaller crowds

One of Turkey’s greatest attributes is its beautiful Mediterranean climate — even in the winter, the temperatures hardly dip below freezing. For example, January and February temperatures in Istanbul average around 48 degrees (8.8 degrees Celsius) and 49 degrees (9.4 degrees Celsius). These numbers might lower slightly as you travel further north or higher up into the mountains, but snowstorms are rarely a thing. Still, winter is the best time to avoid crowds, as most people save their travels for the spring and summer. Liam Dunch, Abercrombie & Kent product manager for Europe, agrees that January and February are the best times to visit Turkey for fewer crowds.

Because Turkey is such a large country, with so many different areas to explore and things to do, experts may tell you there is no wrong time to visit Turkey for the weather. “It depends on your purpose,” says Dunch. “If you’ll explore the historic and cultural treasures, anytime is good. But the best times would be from mid-May to late June, and September and October.”

In Istanbul, for example, temperatures in May average around 71 degrees (21.6 degrees Celsius). In June, they rise to 80 degrees (26.6 degrees Celsius). The summer can be hot, with an average high of 85 degrees (29.4 degrees Celsius), but it’s still quite comfortable. By September and October, the temperatures dip back down to 77 degrees (25 degrees Celsius) and 68 degrees (20 degrees Celsius), respectively.

Spring and autumn also bring the best weather for hot air ballooning in Cappadocia, now a world-famous experience. While you can float above this landscape any time of year, the mild climate of April to June and September to October are most comfortable.

Best time to visit Turkey for lower prices

As is true with most tourist destinations, lower prices are usually available when fewer tourists are in town, as businesses make their rates more attractive to lure in travellers during the slow season. The same is true in Turkey. Another option to save on cost is to book way in advance.

“The best way to get low prices is to book early enough to get low rates on the hotels,” says Dunch. “Otherwise, January and February in general.”

Best time to visit Turkey for festivals

Turkey is a country that positively pops with festivals; if you want to see how the locals celebrate, there many opportunities to do so. Istanbul is the destination with the most celebrations. The Istanbul Arts Festival is the leading one, and it takes place in mid-summer. To attend the Istanbul Jazz Festival, visit in July. Then there are others a bit more off the beaten path.

“The little village of Alaçatı, west of Izmir, hosts an incredible herbs festival in April,” says Dunch. “Spring herbs are used as a specialty, fried into certain dishes in western Turkey in the spring.” He adds that in Antalya a classical music festival is hosted in the world’s best-preserved, 1,900-year-old amphitheatre.

“Another interesting one is the Rose Harvest Festival in Isparta in early April,” he says. “Come and see the black roses.” Gallipoli and Urla also host grape harvest festivals in October. And this is just the beginning. Year-round, Turkey is a destination that packs in the celebrations and the festivals.

Best time to visit Turkey for the beach

best times to visit Turkey

From Izmir to Bodrum, Antalya, and beyond, Turkey has some truly stunning seaside destinations. The best time to go to Turkey for beach weather is definitely the summer, when temperatures are at their hottest and driest — in July, Bodrum can get as hot as 95 degrees (35 degrees Celsius). In general, June, July, August, and September are considered to be the best times to hit the beach in Turkey.

Worst times to visit Turkey

If you do go to the beach during the summer months, know that you’ll likely be there with thousands of other tourists. Across the board, summer in Europe — and August in particular — is hot, crowded, and expensive.

“Twenty years ago, no one in Istanbul had air conditioning; there was no need,” said Dunch. “With the changing of the climate and global warming, the seasons are changing. August is still the warmest month, which receives a huge amount of European holiday-goers.”

Diving Into A World Of Adventures At Ras Al Khaimah, UAEhttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/in/destinations/adventures-at-ras-al-khaimah/2023-10-12T04:30:33+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/in/?p=224717Ras Al Khaimah Adventures

From flying over UAE’s highest mountains on the world’s longest zipline to cracking open oysters for pearls, there are many adventures to be had in Ras Al Khaimah. Travel+Leisure India & South Asia’s contributor joins in on a few.

The lub-dub of my thumping heart grew louder with every passing second, until it seemed to drown the wail of the wind whooshing through the mountains. My throat was parched as I surveyed the landscape of the rugged Hajar mountains from my vantage point atop Jebel Jais the highest peak in the UAE. Having done numerous hikes across the mighty Himalayas and the Alps, this 1,934-metre-high mountain should’ve barely caused any concern—if only I wasn’t about to fly down from it at hair-raising speed on the world’s longest zipline! The thrill coursing through my veins was electrifying, a feeling I’d soon get accustomed to through various adventures in Ras Al Khaimah.

The oldest of the seven emirates that make up the UAE, Ras Al Khaimah, or RAK as it’s often abbreviated, has been continually inhabited for over 7,000 years. It was the last emirate to join the UAE after its formation in 1971, and unlike its popular, glitzy neighbours Dubai and Abu Dhabi, this small and sparsely populated emirate manages to retain much of its heritage, culture, and natural charm. The only emirate that boasts a landscape of desert, sea, and mountains, RAK is the epicentre of adventures for varied interests, age groups, and levels of daring.

Zipping Through Ravines

Jais Flight
Jais Flight lets you zipline for almost three kilometres over jagged peaks and deep ravines.

Inarguably, the most thrilling of them all is the Jais Flight. Reaching speeds of up to 160 kmph, it promises three minutes of pure adrenaline as you zipline for almost three kilometres over jagged peaks and deep ravines. In any other instance, even the thought of such an activity would’ve sent my acrophobic self running in the opposite direction. But the fact that over 70,000 people have attempted the flight with zero incidents and that it’s a once-in-a-lifetime bucket-list experience, made me muster the courage to give it a go.

Ras Al Khaimah Adventures
The Jais flight platform is located at the top of Jebel Jais.

The drive from Ras Al Khaimah city to Jais Adventure Park up in the mountains was short, smooth, and picturesque. After signing a bunch of forms, my fellow adventurers and I were shown a demo video and then fitted with suits, helmets, GoPro cameras, and harnesses, before being driven to the launch platform at the top of Jebel Jais. One last set of instructions, and soon I was standing on the launch pad, with my instructor swiftly fastening my harnesses to the zipline. “So far, so good. I can do this,” I kept telling myself over and over.

It wasn’t until I was instructed to lie prone in a push-up position and then lifted off the ground to secure the last of the harnesses, that I knew my fragile heart couldn’t take it. Dangling from the zipline, with no ground beneath my feet, just the endless expanse of mountains, I engaged in one last furious inner dialogue in an attempt to face my fears. But alas! Seconds away from my flight, I was half-shouting, half-crying to be let off, even as my friends zipped down without a second thought. They’d later narrate the fantastic experience with excitement still writ in their eyes, while I listened with the disappointment of chickening out at the last moment.

Desert Delights

Jais Sledder
Jais Sledder sits comfortably on a lowslung track and goes up to a speed of 40kmph.

There should be no room for regret anymore; I was determined to go headlong into the next adventure, come what may. Jais Sledder sits comfortably on a low-slung track. On it, I hurtled down the Hajar mountains at a top speed of 40 kmph, swerving over 1,840 hairpin curves and undulating waves, with glorious panoramas of the mountains around and the coastline in the far distance. Now this was something more suited to my disposition—thrilling, yet not terrifying, with the complete freedom to speed up or brake the sled as I pleased.

Al Wadi Desert
Al Wadi Desert is within a 1,235-acre private nature reserve.

On the second day, we drove into the Al Wadi Desert through small mounds of sand dunes interspersed with sparse vegetation. The ultraluxe Ritz-Carlton Ras Al Khaimah, Al Wadi Desert lay sprawled within a 1,235-acre private nature reserve, which we set out to explore aboard a handsome 4×4. Over the hour-long drive that took us over steep dunes, we came face to face with herds of gazelles, Arabian oryx, and other fascinating desert natives from the animal world.

Camping
Camping in Ras Al Khaimah is a great way to connect with the outdoors.

As the sun began its descent on the horizon, we drove deeper into the desert and arrived at the Bassata Desert Village. Designed like a colourful Bedouin camp, it offers an array of adventure activities such as sandboarding, quad biking, camel rides, and the popular dune bashing, which sent us squealing as we drove up, down, and sideways on the dunes, revving up mounds of sand along the way. After a relatively quiet sunset break atop one of the dunes, we arrived back at the village to an assortment of barbecues served alongside the entertainment of the night—traditional belly dancing and swirling Tanoura dance, followed by a dazzling fire show.

Water Adventures in Ras Al Khaimah

Ras Al Khaimah Adventures
A traditional boat at the Suwaidi Pearls demo station.

The last day was especially exciting for the water baby in me, as we set out to the Arabian Gulf in a traditional-style boat. Cruising through the azure waters of the Arabian Gulf, we passed by lush mangrove ecosystems and desert shores with camels milling about, arriving at what looked like a floating house in the middle of the water. This was the demo station of Suwaidi Pearls, the Arab world’s first pearl farm established by the world’s first Arabian pearl farmer, Abdulla Rashed Al Suwaidi.

Pearl Farming
Professional pearl farmers give a lesson on sustainable farming techniques.

Here, we met Obaid who gave us a lowdown on pearl farming, its chequered history, and newer sustainable farming techniques. Hands-on lessons on different types of pearl oysters and pearl grades followed a quick tour of a traditional pearl diving boat. Obaid also pulled up one of the oyster baskets from the sea to demonstrate how the oysters grow alongside corals, sponges, and other sea creatures. He then asked for a volunteer, to which I promptly raised my hand. The sea is my favourite playground, and I would’ve been up for any adventure there.

I was instructed to plunge my arm into a tank full of oysters and pick one. Putting my theory lessons to practice, I pried its shell open with a special knife and gingerly felt my way around its mushy organs with one finger. Within seconds, I felt the hardened round surface of a pearl. “Only 60 per cent of the farmed oysters produce a pearl. You sure are lucky to find one,” Obaid said, as I pulled out a shiny white pearl and held it in the palm of my hand. Now that was a whole other definition of adventure, one I wasn’t going to forget anytime soon!

The garden is replete with 3D floral designs like giant mushrooms, humanoid ants, and swans.

This City Has Strict Rules Against Drinking Alcohol — But Its Cocktail Scene Is Thrivinghttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/in/destinations/middle-east/dubai-has-strict-rules-against-drinking-alcohol-but-its-cocktail-scene-is-thriving/2023-09-20T04:31:31+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/in/?p=222150cocktail spots in Dubai

It’s evening in Dubai: the air is hot, the streets full, and the skyscrapers sparkling. I am at Jun’s Restaurant sipping a Pure Shores cocktail, a delicious combination of tequila, mezcal, pomegranate, elderflower, citrus, and grapefruit soda. I close my eyes and savour the fresh, crisp, and invigorating cocktail before reminding myself that I’m enjoying this beverage in a place where drinking alcohol is illegal.

In Islam, the main religion of the city, consuming alcohol is prohibited. Under Sharia Law, the religious legal system for the Islamic faith, even an indirect association with alcohol is not allowed. So, it’s interesting that a report from the World Health Organization records drinkers in the UAE consuming almost twice the global average in alcohol per year, outboozing traditionally heavy-drinking Western nations such as the UK, Ireland, the US, and Australia.

Check out some of these amazing cocktail spots in Dubai

According to Global Data, in 2021, the UAE spirits market was valued at USD 7.4 billion and is forecasted to grow at least 13 percent in five years. These numbers include the 85 percent expat population but do not account for the approximately 14.36 million tourists that visit Dubai each year.

[inline_related_article article_id="214908,214321"]

But if drinking alcohol is illegal, how is this happening? Why did cocktail giant, Diageo, hold their 2023 bartending competition here, and how did three Dubai hot spots make the World’s 50 Best Bars list?

There are loopholes that allow non-Muslim tourists and expats living in Dubai to drink in specific licensed locations. It is these licensed restaurants, hotels, and hotel bars that are contributing to the epic rise of Dubai’s cocktail scene.

There are almost 13,000 restaurants in Dubai (11 with Michelin stars), and with top-quality food comes discerning customers in search of high-standard cocktails. Some bars are nestled in hotels helmed by world-class brands, like Nikki Beach and the SLS, while others are only-in-Dubai haunts. For many mixologists, Dubai to the perfect place to hone their craft, dazzle drinkers with something new, and most importantly, be recognised.

Kelvin Cheung is an award-winning Canadian chef who launched his restaurant, Jun’s, in downtown Dubai in 2019. After opening two successful cocktail bars in India, he knew that Dubai was the best next step.

“All the big players [in food and cocktails] are here now,” he tells me as he presents a new and colourful drink. “There is a dense multicultural diaspora in Dubai and things that get started here go international. If you want things to happen, they will happen here.”

Cheung’s unique cocktail menu reflects his multicultural past, the child of Asian immigrants growing up in Toronto, living in India and travelling the world. Both the food and cocktail menus are very personal and flavour-forward. He even has a drink called PB&J, an homage to his time as a latch-key kid in the ’90s.

He gestures to downtown Dubai, sparkling lights in palm trees line the spotless streets and luxury cars are parked along the curb. Everything here is glitz and glamour, distinctiveness, and exceptionality. Cheung attributes the rise in distinctive and delectable cocktails to the ease and accessibility of fresh and exclusive ingredients. “We can get anything imported,” he says. “Literally anything we want. And it’s not crazy expensive. The rate of consumption is so high that we can have premium products at a good price.”

cocktail spots in Dubai

Later that week, I’m sitting in Ginger Moon, the boho-inspired, poolside bar and kitchen at the W Hotel Mina Seyahi, an adults-only hotel that opened just over a year ago. I am overlooking the giant yachts resting in the handsome human-made harbour while the breeze floats by as though it, too, were manufactured.

Ginger Moon understands the importance of providing guests with a superior cocktail experience and approaches mixing drinks like an art. The cocktail menu is written like a poem, lyrical and flowery with descriptions that start with “fly on the wild side,” and “get lost in the jungle.”

I am sampling their ‘no waste’ dinner menu, part of Dubai Food Week that highlights this year’s theme: sustainability. The beverage manager, Emanuel Ferraz, has designed a cocktail for each course, crafted from kitchen leftovers. With the kitchen leading the way, this project has allowed Ginger Moon’s mixologists to get creative, combining new flavours, and playing with the sweet and the savoury.

“There is a big connection between the W brand and cocktail culture, it’s in our DNA,” says Ferraz as I sample his gin, tomato, and basil concoction. “When [guests] arrive in the hotel they already expect to find something unique. [They want] something different than the classic, something quite extravagant and [for us] we can say that cocktails are a big part [of that].”

As with everything in Dubai — the new buildings, the meals at Michelin-starred restaurants — the cocktails are executed with precision. From the moment I stepped onto my luxurious Emirates flight, greeted by a perfect old-fashioned, I was dazzled by the city’s ability to capture its five-star brilliance in a glass. Drinks in Dubai are not merely drinks: they are artistic masterpieces that represent the glamour and bounding success of the UAE.

24 Best Things To Do In Dubaihttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/in/destinations/middle-east/best-things-to-do-in-dubai-2/2023-09-19T04:30:16+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/in/?p=221586Things to do in Dubai

In Dubai, it’s possible to chill on the beach, stroll in the desert, and have a cocktail at the top of a skyscraper all on the same day. “Dubai’s got a glorious magnetism to it,” says Nada Badran, a Dubai resident for more than 30 years and experienced curator and tour guide with Wander With Nada. “There’s so much palpable energy in the air, and every day the city offers a new opportunity for creative fulfilment.”

Despite the above, Dubai is sometimes shrouded by misconceptions, says Isabella Sullivan, founder and editor of Near+Far, a travel magazine for modern Middle East travellers. “The first misconception is that it’s all glossy, fake, and superficial, which couldn’t be further from the truth,” she told Travel + Leisure. Another misconception is that it’s not a safe place to visit. On the contrary, Dean Hayter, travel product manager at Origin, says that “living in Dubai is the safest I have ever felt in any city.”

So if any of the above has kept you from booking a trip to this vibrant city, you can set your mind at ease. And once you’ve arrived, here are the best things to do in Dubai.

The best things to do in Dubai

Learn about local coffee culture

The Arab world is known for its coffee — from traditional Turkish coffee to modern delights like cereal lattes — and Dubai has myriad cafes in which to get your daily fix. “[There are] so many cool, unique, artsy, and design-led coffee shops,” says Sullivan. “Some have beautiful gardens and outdoor spaces, while a new slew of them have moody interiors and unique, immersive themes.” Sullivan’s favourites are The Grey, Nightjar Coffee and Tom&Serg.

Cruise Dubai Creek

Things to do in Dubai

In the past, Dubai Creek was part of the trade route connecting ports in the Arabian Gulf. Today, it’s a beautiful way to see the city and one of Hayter’s top suggestions in Dubai. “Go to Dubai Creek before sunset and hire an abra (traditional wooden boat) for a private cruise,” Hayter says. “When you’re in the middle of the creek and the sky turns pink and the call to prayer fills the sky, it is magical.”

Go stargazing in the desert

Fascinated by the night sky? Book a night safari with ecotourism company Platinum Heritage, which includes guidance from an astronomer and the use of a telescope. “The sky is so dark that you get to see the most incredible blanket of stars,” says Hayter. “If you’re with an astronomer who can explain everything you’re looking at, it’s an amazing experience.”

Play a round of golf

Golf may not come to mind immediately when planning a vacation to the Middle East, but Dubai has several recognisable courses, including The Emirates Golf Club – Majlis Course, which is considered one of the best in the destination. Kelvin Cheung, chef-partner at Jun’s and a Dubai resident for two years, suggests checking to see if any of your credit cards include free rounds of golf as a perk. Note that the best time to golf here is between November and March when the weather is more comfortable.

Relax at a Dubai beach

“Dubai has some great and uncrowded public beaches, where you can just enjoy the warm Arabian sea and sunshine at no cost,” says Sullivan. Try Kite Beach, since it also offers fantastic showers and bathrooms, plus a handful of food stands and coffee shops. For an extra treat, rent a Careem bike and cruise along Kite Beach’s lengthy boardwalk.

Enjoy the diverse dining scene

Between the innovative design of its restaurants and the exceptional diversity of its culinary offerings, Dubai is a fantastic place for foodies. When planning your meals, consider chic restaurants like Amazonico, which takes you on a sensory journey through the Amazon; SEVA, a laid-back, plant-based cafe within a wellness centre; and Jun’s, a fusion restaurant with the Burj Khalifa skyscraper as its backdrop and where the chef aims to introduce himself to each table.

“The city offers a wide range of flavours and textures, and truly pushes boundaries,” says Chef Cheung of Jun’s. “Because the Dubai food scene offers top-quality food and service in every corner of the city, my team and I stay motivated to deliver excellence with every experience. There are very few places in the world that cater to such a diverse set of people.”

Indulge in the facilities of a luxe hotel

Visiting a world-class hotel in Dubai and enjoying its wellness offerings is a must. “Dubai has so many gorgeous hotels, and more often than not, you can purchase day passes to enjoy their facilities, including beaches, pools, and spas; some also have tennis and padel courts,” says Sullivan. “Apps like Privlee and Viya are great for tourists and residents; you pay a fee and have unlimited access to partner hotels, beach clubs, and gym facilities, so you can try somewhere new every day.”

Get lost in the streets of Old Dubai

Things to do in Dubai

“I am probably at my happiest when wandering in Old Dubai’s streets, sikkas (alleys), and souks, which are swarming with activity,” says Badran of Wander With Nada. “The labyrinthine souks are where everyone wants to sell you something; ‘Shakira’ and ‘professor’ are heard countless times, as vendors appear to have unanimously agreed it’s the best way to capture customers’ attention. People duck into beckoning small shops where stools are commonplace, as is a cup of chai, and every transaction involves a lengthy bargaining debate. Sounds of carts mingle with scents of aromatic spices and musky perfume.”

Explore Al Serkal Avenue

Image Credit: GIUSEPPE CACACE/AFP via Getty Images

Al Serkal Avenue is an industrial warehouse district that has been transformed into a creative hub. “It’s an oasis of art, community spaces, and all things quirky,” says Badran. “To visit is to be transported to another world of art galleries, cosy cafes, boutique shops, and plenty more.” The venue’s galleries are open to the public at no cost, and it’s fun to wander here even if you’re not an art buff.

Go on a desert adventure

Things to do in Dubai

Tour through the desert in a 4×4, or go extreme off-roading in a dune buggy or on a quad bike with Expert Rangers. And if you want the full Arabian desert experience, book the package that includes sandboarding, camel riding, an Arab dinner, and entertainment.

Get the best view of Dubai

If you’re a thrill seeker, consider a dive with Skydive Dubai. Divers fall 13,000 feet through the sky over the Palm Jumeirah — what a memory to take home with you.

Book a traditional spa treatment

A hammam is a traditional cleansing ritual that involves hot steam, a revitalising scrub, rhassoul clay, and vitamin-E-rich products — you are bound to exit this experience feeling the softest you’ve ever felt. We recommend booking a hammam treatment at the Guerlain Spa at the One&Only The Palm.

Head to Hatta

Things to do in Dubai

Hatta is in the Hajar Mountains, about 60 miles (96.56 km) outside of Dubai. This is the perfect place to appreciate nature — go for a hike with spectacular views, kayak in the reservoir, or mountain bike on designated trails. There’s also a heritage village that’s home to restored traditional houses and a defence tower.

Scuba dive in a pool

Deep Dive Dubai isn’t your typical swimming pool — it’s the deepest in the world at about 197 feet deep. Scuba, freediving, and snorkel courses are offered here, and if you’re already certified, you’re welcome to explore this underwater world designed to look like a sunken city.

Visit the Museum of the Future

Things to do in Dubai
Image Credit: KARIM SAHIB/AFP via Getty Images

This building is an architectural wonder in shape and design. The exterior is wrapped in Arabic poetry, and the structure’s circular shape represents humanity while the abyss in the middle signifies the indefinite future. Inside you will find immersive exhibitions that ask observers to reflect on the world, the future, and themselves. Purchase tickets in advance, as the museum is a popular attraction and day-of tickets aren’t always available.

Visit Expo City Dubai

This venue is a future-forward miniature city that maintains much of what was offered during the World Expo (Expo City was part of the exhibitions, which took place in 2022, delayed due to the pandemic). The sustainable city offers educational experiences and attractions that revolve around global topics, plus multiple playgrounds and parks.

Spend a day at Dubai’s newest resort

Beyonce performed an exclusive show for the opening ceremony of Atlantis The Royal — what a way to get the world’s attention. This ultra-luxurious resort is worth checking out, even if you aren’t staying the night. It’s home to eight restaurants helmed by celebrity chefs (including Nobu by the Beach), a sky-high infinity pool, a club with panoramic views of the skyline, and dozens of other experiences.

Book a tour with Wander with Nada

Nada of Wander With Nada is a fun and peppy guide, sure, but she’s also incredibly knowledgeable about Dubai, and therefore just the guide you want to get to know the destination. Choose from several tour options, including one that highlights Dubai landmarks and another that focuses on Old Dubai.

Party at a beach club

Beach clubs in Dubai are worth the hype, with Twiggy by La Cantine and Nammos being two of our favourites. Rent a cabana or beach chair and spend the entire day (or just a few hours) soaking in the sun with a drink in hand, listening to vibey beats.

Shop in Dubai Gold Souk

Things to do in Dubai

The streets may as well be paved with gold in Dubai’s Gold Souk, a fascinating marketplace with nearly 400 vendors. You will see gold of all karats and styles, from simple to elaborate. Note that if you do plan to purchase something special, don’t be shy about negotiating for a better price, as that is custom here.

Shop in a Dubai mall

Image Credit: Jakub Porzycki/NurPhoto via Getty Images

Dubai has no shortage of malls, where you’ll find just about every brand you can name. Visit Dubai Mall to see one of the largest malls in the world (it’s also home to the Dubai Aquarium); the textile souk for traditional shopping; or the Dubai Design District (D3), which is home to pop-up fashion boutiques and rotating art installations.

Go skiing indoors

Things to do in Dubai
Image Credit: Buena Vista Images/Getty Images

If you can dream it, Dubai can execute it, and Ski Dubai is proof. Want to ski indoors and then step outside into warm weather? This is the place. Maintaining freezing temperatures all year long, this ski resort provides guests with ski suits to keep them cosy. Lessons are available, and there’s even a chair lift — and penguins — inside.

Order a tailor-made outfit

If there’s one thing foreigners may not know about the Middle East, it’s that the tailors are amazing and that most locals have everything from simple, everyday outfits to wedding gowns tailor-made for them. A trip to Dubai is therefore an opportunity to have your dream design brought to life. Visit the textile souk for fabric, get measured by a tailor, and voila, you’ll have a new outfit within days. Getting fit for traditional dishdasha (for men) or abaya (for women) is a nice way to bring a bit of Dubai home, too.

Ride the Dubai Metro

The Dubai Metro is an extensive and well-maintained public transportation system that connects major locations in Dubai at an affordable price. Residents typically use these trains for their daily commute, so hop on a train to feel like a local.
