Macau, the Las ‘Vegas of Asia’, has a UK-themed integrated resort called The Londoner Macao at Sands Resorts Macao of which Beckham is the global brand ambassador. The facade guests see on arrival at The Londoner Macao is a realistic interpretation of the Palace of Westminster, also known as Houses of Parliament. Famous London landmarks have been reproduced with great attention to detail, like the life-size replica of Big Ben that chime on the hour and a glass-canopied porte cochere modelled after the one at London’s Victoria Station. Right in the middle of the Crystal Palace atrium is a full-scale Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain with Anteros, the Greek god of selfless love, perched on top and statues of Henry VIII and Elizabeth strategically placed at different corners. A few minutes away from the clock tower is the iconic red double-decker bus. The original 1966 London bus has a small driver’s compartment and an open platform at the back.

The Londoner Macao that opened gates in 2021 but officially launched in May this year, completes the Europe-themed triptych by Sands Resorts Macao, following The Venetian Macao’s 2007 debut and The Parisian Macao’s unveiling in 2016. Situated at the heart of the Cotai Strip, The Londoner Macao initially began as the Sands Cotai Central in April 2012. Later, Las Vegas Sands decided to spruce up the property with a London theme. The revamping started in 2019, and the property reopened to the public in 2021.

Today, there are five global hotel brands in The Londoner Macao— The Londoner Hotel, an all-suite luxury hotel with approximately 600 suites; Londoner Court with 368 super-premium multi-bay suites from one to four bedrooms; the 659-room Conrad Macao; the 400-room The St. Regis Macao; and Sheraton Grand Macao, which, at 4,001 rooms, is the largest Sheraton in the world.

You Can Now Live In A Muji House At Muji Base Kamogawahttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/in/hotels/asia-hotels/muji-base-kamogawa-a-real-muji-house-in-japan/2023-09-08T02:30:29+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/in/?p=219930Muji House

Ever since the three branches of the Muji Hotel opened – in Ginza, Beijing, and Shenzhen – we’ve been blessed with the experience of living in the cosy, upscale Muji environment. But what if it’s not just a room in a hotel but a low-profile Muji house that encourages you to get on foot and explore the local area? This is Muji Base.

Muji Base was created with the idea of a place where people can stay and enjoy the local community, rather than visiting like a typical tourist. It can be the place where nomads choose to live and work remotely while learning about the lifestyles of the local community – with Muji products surrounding them every minute of their stay.

You can now live in a Muji house at Muji Base Kamogawa

[gallery size=”large” ids=”219933,219935″]

The first Muji Base is now open for reservations in Kamogawa, Chiba Prefecture, Japan. Situated just 90 minutes south of Tokyo, Muji Base Kamogawa is located amid the mountains and beautiful rice terrains. It’s a perfect getaway and a serene work environment for any type of traveller.

As expected, Muji Base is full of Muji amenities including food and snacks, but what’s more, there are complimentary menus to try at the nearby Cafe & Meal Muji Minnami-no-Sato.

[inline_related_article article_id="214093,206970"]

[gallery size=”large” ids=”219937,219939,219941″]

The local services are plenty. One of them is the goods delivery service from local farmers who will get you the freshest goods possible. The cafe also provides delicious-looking breakfast and homey Japanese meals as well.

The house can accommodate up to five people at JPY20,000 per night (INR 11,277) with a minimum reservation of two nights to really get to the heart of the Kamogawa way of life. Compared to its hotel counterpart, Muji Base is quite cost-effective, as you get to relax in an adorable Muji ambience, too.

Muji Base Kamogawa is now open for reservations until February 2024 via Airbnb.

Ritz-Carlton Rissai Valley Is Its First Reserve Resort In Chinahttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/in/hotels/asia-hotels/ritz-carlton-reserve-rissai-valley-jiuzhaigou/2023-09-02T08:30:34+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/in/?p=218878Ritz-Carlton Rissai Valley

Ritz-Carlton has just announced a new resort under its Reserve range of properties. Rissai Valley, located on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in Southwestern China, has officially opened in Jiuzhaigou.

Offering guests stunning views of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Jiuzhaigou Valley, Rissai Valley gets its name from the Tibetan word for “village,” and opens guests up to the World Biosphere Reserve — a spellbinding setting of alpine mountains soaring above a fairyland of forests, lakes, and waterfalls.

Here’s a peek inside the Ritz-Carlton in Rissai Valley

[gallery ids="218883,218885,218887,218889,218891,218893,218895,218897"]

“We are thrilled to debut Rissai Valley, China’s first Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Jiuzhaigou, one of the most stunningly beautiful and culturally rich areas of the world,” said Tina Edmundson, President, Luxury, Marriott International. “Rissai Valley is the sixth property in a rare portfolio of exclusive estates worldwide, offering an intimate and transformative experience rooted in heartfelt care and human connection. I cannot wait for guests to enjoy the ancient indigenous culture and traditions of Jiuzhaigou through a unique Ritz-Carlton Reserve lens.”

The property is 430 kilometres north of Chengdu and is accessible via daily connecting flights from Chengdu to Jiuzhai Huanglong Airport. The drive from the Jiuzhai Huanglong Airport to Rissai Valley takes roughly 75 minutes by car. Rissai Valley’s 87 villas face the snow-capped Minshan mountain range, forests, and ancient Tibetan villages. Designed by Wimberly Allison Tong & Goo, the firm paid homage to Tibetan heritage via traditional building forms and locally sourced materials. This is also reflected in the landscaping where John Pettigrew created immaculate gardens with indigenous planting to reflect the extraordinary landscapes.

[inline_related_article article_id="191780,186919"]

Amenities and activities include the Rissai Spa, Sichuan and Tibetan cuisine experiences, an expansive infinity swimming pool, and a Reserve Kids’ Club program with activities like guided outdoor adventures, treasure hunts, animal feeding, kite flying, and stargazing evenings. Raffles Udaipur Recently Celebrated Its Two-year Anniversary, And We Joined In On The Fun!https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/in/hotels/two-year-anniversary-of-raffles-udaipur/2023-08-11T08:59:48+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/in/?p=215043Raffles Udaipur

Raffles Udaipur recently commemorated its 2nd anniversary. The luxury hospitality establishment marked the occasion with an exquisite culinary experience, insightful dialogue and a glimpse into its future.

Raffles Udaipur, a mystical oasis located amidst the serene beauty of Udai Sagar Lake, has been creating ripples since its inception in 2021. Weaving together soirees, sojourns and stories, the brand’s maiden Indian outpost stands as the pinnacle of timeless opulence that encompasses classic luxury and conscious living, making it an ideal canvas for the discerning traveller. On its second-year anniversary, this charm continues to entice travellers, including me.

Bright and warm smiles greeted me at the marina. As I settled into the boat bound for the private island, a soft breeze delicately caressed my hair. It finally felt like I was in the city of lakes. The boat gently rocked on the tranquil waters, akin to a nostalgic lullaby, with the majestic Aravalli Hills as the perfect backdrop. 20 minutes later, I could see the icon glistening at the horizon — Raffles Udaipur.

The Majestic Oasis

Raffles Udaipur experience

After a swift check-in and the signature high tea at the iconic Writer’s Bar, I made my way to the room. Walking through the pruned gardens, the porter tells me about the 101 rooms sprawled across the property. As I stepped into mine, I was immediately whisked away to a bygone era of royal opulence. Standing on the balcony overlooking the enchanting Udai Sagar Lake, it was easy to picture myself in a world of enchanting tales and magical journeys, especially since the hotel blurs the lines between old-school fantasy and reality. Every corner reminds me of the rich cultural heritage pieced together for a new contemporary world — from its European-inspired decor and private pool to the one-button butler service and lavish spa treatments. ‘Distinctly Raffles,’ I think to myself as I explore the room.

This time, I’m visiting to celebrate this very essence of the brand that has been enthralling Indian audiences for two years now.

Two Years of Raffles Udaipur

Panel Discussion

Panel Discussion

The evening’s commencement of Raffles Udaipur’s two-year anniversary was marked by an inaugural round table discussion that delved deep into the intricate interplay of travel, culture, wellness, luxury and art, all woven around the central theme of sustainability.

The panel, boasting esteemed thought leaders, innovators, and influencers from diverse domains, sparked a dynamic discourse that discussed the future of a world where sustainability and luxury seamlessly converge. This included David Abraham, co-founder of Abraham & Thakore; Kriti Tula, co-founder of Doodlage; Niharika Rajput, founder of PaperChirrups; and celebrity and wellness enthusiast Vidya Malavade. The discussion was deftly moderated by journalist Pooja Singh.

Guests at the event

The essence of the panel discussion lay in the diverse backgrounds of the panellists, which brought forth thought-provoking viewpoints — spanning from the drawbacks of fast fashion and working with local artisans to addressing soil nutrients depletion, seeking balance across various facets, and tackling the environmental impact of fashion waste. The stimulating conversation explored the significance of responsible travel and how the hospitality sector can benefit the environment and local communities.

The discussion culminated with the panellists delivering insightful remarks that gently urged the evening’s attendees toward embracing a more holistically sustainable lifestyle as an imperative in these times. Abraham encapsulated the sentiment with a parting thought: “Question everything and don’t take anything for granted.” Following suit, Tula added encouraged individuals to “learn more and start small, but let that small step be consistent. And it will inherently pave the way for change.”

Dine and Drinks

Ami Shroff

With enough food for thought, it was time to satiate my rumbling stomach, too! Continuing the evening’s progression, the spotlight turned to Ami Shroff, India’s pioneer women flair bartender, displaying her extraordinary talent and mixology expertise. Captivated by her mesmerising performance, attendees indulged in the thoughtfully concocted cocktails that artfully captured the very essence of the destination.

As enchanting live music echoed through the hotel’s halls, the talented chefs at Raffles Udaipur prepared a magnificent and mouthwatering feast inspired by the captivating flavours of Rajasthan.  Ranging from a live pasta station to an extensive dessert counter, there was something for everyone!

Parting Words

Management

“As we celebrate the second anniversary of Raffles Udaipur, we wanted to showcase our commitment to creating experiences that not only offer luxurious indulgence, but also prioritise wellness and sustainability. It is essential for us to tread lightly on the planet while providing our guests with the best of hospitality”, said Jui Kulkarni Sharma, Owner of Raffles Udaipur when asked about her vision for the anniversary celebrations.

Rajesh Namby, General Manager of Raffles Udaipur, expressed his delight at the success of the second-year anniversary celebration, stating, “At Raffles Udaipur, we strive to curate exceptional experiences for our guests. The second-year anniversary celebration stood as an unequivocal testament to our unwavering commitment to wellness, sustainability, luxury and travel. We are proud to have created memories that will last a lifetime.”

This night, too, will remain etched in my mind for years to come. Meanwhile, I gaze at the calm Udai Sagar Lake’s water glisten under the moonlit night, mentally preparing my next visit to Raffles Udaipur.

10 Best Public Hot Springs To Visit In Japanhttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/in/trips/wellness-spas/best-public-hot-springs-to-visit-in-japan/2023-08-07T08:30:18+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/in/?p=214093Hot springs in Japan

Wellness-oriented escapes are a major trend these days, but ancient Japanese bathing traditions are a way of life dating back thousands of years. The island country in East Asia is blessed with a wealth of geothermal hot springs that reportedly possess healing benefits — including promoting circulation, soothing sore muscles, and relaxing the mind.

Over the centuries, an entire ritualised bathing culture has sprung up (no pun intended) around onsens — a catchall term used to describe the naturally warmed, mineral-rich waters and the associated bathhouse facilities — and that means certain protocols, customs, and etiquette need to be observed by both locals and travellers.

If you’re planning to participate in this age-old pastime, it’s important to respect the enduring history and heritage. Soaking in public hot springs is very much a communal activity. Most onsen remain separated between males and females. Many still don’t accept guests with tattoos. Got ink? It’s definitely something to look into in advance or risk potentially being turned away. “Before entering an onsen, it’s customary to rinse off,” says Keiko Watanabe, the spa and wellness manager across the Hoshino Resorts portfolio. “After getting out, don’t forget to drink plenty of water and moisturise.”.

Scroll on for the best public hot springs in Japan, according to local experts.

The best public hot springs in Japan

Togura Kanze Onsen — Chikuma, Nagano Prefecture

“A popular pitstop for tourists heading to Zenkoji Temple in nearby Nagano, Togura Kanze Onsen brims with emerald green hot springs,” says Watanabe. The temperature isn’t too hot, which means you can enjoy a longer soak and reap all the relaxing rewards. “Sulfur also makes the skin supple, so after bathing you will emerge feeling supple and moisturised,” says Watanabe.

Tenzan — Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture

One of the most popular hot springs towns in Japan, Hakone has plenty of peaceful places to soak. Nature lovers will feel a deep connection to the Earth and a true sense of serenity after a few minutes at Tenzan, a collection of naturally heated outdoor rock pools framed by leafy trees. There’s also a bathhouse tucked inside a traditional building.

Hirauchi Kaichu Onsen — Yakushima Island, Kagoshima Prefecture

Located at the southern end of Yakushima Island and accessible only at low tide, Hirauchi Kaichu Onsen is an open-air, sulfuric hot spring in Japan that’s set along a rocky shoreline and gushes from below sea level. “The spectacular coastal setting makes it a particularly special and unique spot to soak,” says Simon Metcalfe, a manager at the Kyushu Tourism Promotion Organisation.

Yu-no-sato — Unzen, Nagasaki Prefecture

Yu-no-sato is a small public onsen in Unzen that’s regarded as the oldest communal bath in the area. In addition to the heritage, people come here for the healing benefits that come from the hot, acidic, iron-rich hot springs. Watanabe warns that the heat can be intense, so it’s important to practice kakeyu (using buckets full of water outside the tub) before fully immersing yourself and soaking for no more than five minutes at first.

Shitan-yu — Shichirida Onsen, Oita Prefecture

There’s a newly renovated area at Konoha-no-yu called Shitan-yu that’s said to be the most concentrated carbonated spring in all of Japan. The low temperature and bubbles enliven the body (it gradually warms you up), so it’s possible to relax and relish a long bath.

Onto — Nagato Yumoto Onsen, Yamaguchi Prefecture

An emblematic example of bringing rich hot springs traditions into the modern age, Onto shines as a beautiful, newly redesigned day-use facility that reopened in historic Nagato Yumoto Onsen just a few years ago. “The lukewarm water is alkaline and smoothes the skin as it removes impurities naturally,” says Watanabe.

Matusiro-sou — Matsushiro, Nagano Prefecture

What was once a secret healing spot for the army of the powerful daimyo Shingen Takeda, Matusiro-sou, located in the castle town of Sanada Jumangoku, is now one of the most well-known spa retreats in Japan. Concentrated iron deposits give the source-fed hot spring its golden colour and myriad beneficial properties, from fighting fatigue to boosting skin health.

Monju-no-yu — Kakeyu Onsen, Nagano Prefecture

The tradition of bathing at Monju-no-yu can be traced back 1,200 years. The hot water is especially great for the feet and lower back. “It’s quite refreshing to soak for about five minutes,” says Watanabe. “Just don’t stay in too long to avoid overheating.” There are several sacred sites in the surrounding area and it’s a lovely place to go for a stroll after visiting the hot spring.

Sahako-no-yu — Iwaki, Fukushima Prefecture

Situated in a hot spring town with more than 1,000 years of history, Sahako-no-yu is a public bathhouse that dates back to the Edo period. “The high temperature of the water and sulfur provides many benefits, and there are famous cherry blossom areas to enjoy,” explains Watanabe. She suggests the act of kakeyu before entering, then dipping your feet and gradually making your way up to your chest.

Naminoyu ‘Akane’ — Unzen, Nagasaki Prefecture

Many people regard Naminoyu ‘Akane’ as the finest outdoor hot springs facility in Obama Onsen, a resort town on the eastern side of the Shimabara Peninsula. Besides the opportunity to unwind in some of the hottest spring waters, visitors can look forward to views of the Tachibana Gulf and magical sunsets.
