The Art Of Making Travel Inclusive, As Decoded By Hotelier Keshav Suri

Keshav Suri, the executive director of The Lalit Suri Hospitality Group, is a prominent LGBTQIA+ activist and founded the celebrated queer-friendly nightclub Kitty Su. The hotelier who remains dedicated to creating opportunities for marginalised communities believes that the conversation around inclusive travel in India has just begun and there’s a long road ahead.

“I have been an avid traveller all along. For me, travel is not a hobby. It’s a way of life, an ongoing love affair with the boundless beauty and diversity our planet has to offer. I have been very lucky to be ableto immerse myself in various cultures. It was my time living in the UK and Paris that truly transformed me; where I fell in love with nightlife, burlesque shows, and cabaret, and got to experience the true art of drag. It was there that the seed for Kitty Su was planted in my head. I came back to India and emphasised what I learned abroad—to create and find your tribe and make a safe space for queer people”, Keshav Suri shares.

Hospitality and Safe Spaces

Globally, many travel and hospitality businesses are making significant strides towards inclusion. Initiatives such as hosting LGBTQ+ events, special experiences tailored for the community, and partnering with LGBTQ+ influencers are becoming more common.

In India, the conversation is just beginning. Travel and hospitality businesses need to come together and understand the requirements of a queer- inclusive travel experience. At The LaLiT, we ensure each hotel is LGBTQIA+ friendly offering them privacy and their own space. We have also started working with other hotels to sensitise and build more inclusive spaces for both the teams and the guests.

The LaLiT has established a workplace that is secure and encouraging. We appreciate diversity and are committed to promoting inclusivity every day. We have employed more than 200 people from the LGBTQIA+ community, including 100+ transgender people across the group in various functions. We have also opened our doors to LGBTQIA+ travellers, recognising their unique needs and preferences and creating an environment where they feel respected, safe, and valued. The LaLiT’s ‘Pure Love’ initiative, which includes same-sex wedding packages and LGBTQIA+ sensitivity training for staff, exemplifies this commitment.

My idea for growth is not an exclusive concept, but a vision where all stakeholders— the environment, people, destinations, and the country— grow with us.

Inclusivity and Travel

When I look to travel, I look for safe spaces for people from my community. Inclusive travel aligns with the changing expectations of travellers and the growing emphasis on social responsibility within the hospitality sector. I research the socio-cultural attitudes and legal standpoints towards LGBTQIA+ individuals at the destination. Additionally, I also look into LGBTQIA+-friendly establishments and activities, ensuring my travels are not just safe but also enjoyable.

Destinations like London, Puerto Rico, Taiwan, and Paris have been at the forefront of championing LGBTQIA+ rights and have always welcomed visitors with open arms. They not only have inclusive policies in place but are also trailblazers with policies that embrace same-sex relationships.

One incident that stands out for me for inclusive and safe travel is my recent participation in the IGLTA (International LGBTQ+ Travel Association) Global Convention in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The locals embraced diversity wholeheartedly—a warm welcome from diverse faces at the front desk, inclusive housekeeping teams ensuring your comfort, and a concierge who understands the nuances of your unique travel.

The Road Ahead

The future of hospitality industry is characterised by a commitment to diversity, accessibility, cultural sensitivity, and responsible practices. The hospitality sector is poised to lead in creating welcoming environments that cater to a wide range of backgrounds, abilities, and preferences, fostering a sense of belonging and respect for all. I am confident that the opportunity presented by pink tourism will be a huge contributor to the economic growth of India in the years to come.
