It was early evening in Barcelona — that wonderful time in Spain when work was over, but the sun was out, and dinner was still a few hours away. I lounged outside a bar called Morro Fi, drinking vermouth over ice and nibbling olives, potato chips, and conservas, those tinned fish that are such a delicacy in Iberia.

Morro Fi is sleek and modern, with a minimalist interior and an equally minimalist menu. “We only serve vermouth, beer, and snacks,” owner Marcel Fernandez said. “As a kid, I went out with my parents after church for a vermouth, before going to lunch with the family. So, I haven’t been very creative. It’s the same menu a vermutería would have served when I was a kid.”

The best Vermouth bars in Barcelona

The hora del vermut, “vermouth hour,” is a sacred time of day in Barcelona. Originally, it meant sometime around noon or 1 pm, when you had a vermouth and a snack to tide you over until lunch. But these days, the vermouth hour can be any time before a meal, though it usually means day drinking. “We don’t like to be open late at night,” Fernandez said.

Morro Fi operates in a narrow space that was a wineshop from the 1950s until 2010, when Fernandez first opened, after covering the city’s bar scene as a blogger. “This is the perfect bar for me, a contemporary place that hasn’t invented anything,” he said. “I don’t know if this bar would work if you put it in the US”

Vermouth is an aromatised wine, infused with botanicals, herbs, spices, and fruits, that clocks in at around 17 per cent alcohol by volume. The ingredients vary but generally include quinine, wormwood, citrus peel, vanilla, gentian root, thyme, ginger, and baking spices. “Producers will say, ‘Ah, our vermouth has thirty or sixty or one million herbs,’ ” said Fernandez, who created his own house vermouth for Morro Fi. “Ours has ten ingredients,” he said, “but they’re secret.”

“Spanish vermouth is not something you spend your time thinking about how complex it is, or how sophisticated you are,” Monti said.”

The historical roots of vermouth lie in Turin, Italy, where the aperitivo became a staple in the late 18th century. By the mid to late 19th century, it was being exported all over the world. Barcelona, in that era, had the largest community of Italian immigrants in Spain, and the local importer of Martini vermouth built a bar that was decorated, in part, by legendary Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí.

[inline_related_article article_id="2856,28435"]

“That’s when vermouth became the drink of choice for Catalans,” François Monti, a Spain-based drinks writer and author of El Gran Libro del Vermut, told me. Catalonia is now the center of vermouth production in Spain, home to brands including Casa Mariol, Yzaguirre, and Timbal, which can all be found in the US.

One night, I met my friend Lucy Garcia — a Barcelona-based film producer who worked with Anthony Bourdain when he shot in Spain — at Cala del Vermut, near the city’s old Gothic cathedral. There we ate a fantastic tortilla, patatas bravas, and pan con tomate with our vermouth, which was poured from a barrel on the bar. “Fer el vermut (literally ‘to do the vermouth’) was a ritual all around Catalonia but almost disappeared in Barcelona, pretty much around the same time people stopped going to Mass,” Garcia said. “It was basically an old man’s drink until about ten years ago.” That’s when a new generation of trendsetters — like Fernandez — ushered in a vermouth rebirth. At Cala del Vermut that evening, I was surprised to see there were no old men, but rather a good-looking, smartly dressed young crowd.

Spanish vermouth has quite a different taste than its Italian cousin. For one thing, it’s not as bitter, but more citrusy and fresh. And it’s meant to be consumed not in cocktails, but on the rocks, with food. “Spanish vermouth is not something you spend your time thinking about how complex it is, or how sophisticated you are,” Monti said.

In Barcelona, my favourite vermuterías have less to do with the quality of the vermouth, and more with the general feeling, a vibe. When I asked Garcia which was her favourite vermouth bar in Barcelona, she chuckled. “I love the one in front of my apartment.”

This natural marvel is just one of the many wonders of Panchgani, attracting travellers with its towering mountains. These hills have some breathtaking viewpoints like Parsi Point, Sydney Point and Kates Point. Go boating at Dhom Dham in Wai and explore the Rajpuri Caves as well as Pratapgad Fort. Don’t forget to enjoy a scenic picnic at Sherbaug, learn about the local art at Devrai Art Village and shop at Budh-ka-Bazaar. If you are keen on adventure, try paragliding here. Last but not least is Durshet, another underrated hill station in Maharashtra. About 40 km away from Lonavala-Khandala, Durshet is calmer than its neighbours and is more about experiencing untamed nature. The quaint village is set across the banks of the river Amba, offering more camping options and nature lodges. Try the Umberkhind trek to witness the battleground where Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj defeated General Kartalab Khan.

Ballad Coffee Bar

The team behind Klongsarn’s home cafe Walden has opened their new spot in Charoennakorn where soothing coffee beans meet vinyl music. Pick a seat by the gleaming window or go upstairs to find a little collection of books. The coffee offerings start at THB 90 (SGD 3), but we’d recommend their Coffee Libre (THB 120/SGD 4), a refreshing, fizzy concoction made with crafted Coca-Cola and lime.

Ballad Coffee Bar. 1337 Chaoren Nakorn Rd. Open Sun – Mon 8am-5pm.

%Arabica

Kyoto’s popular coffee chain known for its minimalist aesthetic, %Arabica has just unveiled its latest branch at Sathorn’s lifestyle community Park Silom. The new branch still adamantly follows the same minimalist aesthetics from its previous outlets with the brand iconic “%” signage, all-white counters, and sleek metallic lines. Choose from the cafe latte (starting at THB 130/SGD 4) or the smooth Kyoto latte (THB 150/SGD 5). There’s also a matcha latte (THB 150/SGD 5) in case you’re not keen on drinking coffee.

Not under our usual radar for sure, but if you have the chance to head to Klongsan, this spot is an OG for quality beans you can trust. The coffee options start at THB 60 (SGD 2), but we’d recommend you go for their creme brulee crumble latte topped with caramelised sugar and cookie crumbs for THB 100 (SGD 3).

After opening its first outpost in Talat Noi, the Danish coffee roastery known for its light-roasted beans has expanded its empire to Ari. The venue still sports that Scandinavian minimalism in its decor–think light wood elements, clean lines, and functionality-forward furniture. Recently, they unveiled a ‘Coffee Course’ where coffee aficionados can sample up to 6 varieties of their offerings in one go for THB 1,200 (SGD 45). Still, we love their hand-brewed coffee (starting at THB 180-300/SGD 6-11) featuring both local and international beans.

La Cabra Ari. Vanit Village. 304 Phaholyothin Rd. Open daily 8am-5pm. Tel. 065-945-6109

Still, if you happen to work in the Thonglor neighbourhood, go to their OG location and order their iced espresso (THB 85/SGD 3) or their aeropress offerings.

25 Most Beautiful Places In The Caribbean — From Emerald-Coloured Sinkholes To Private Islandshttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/sg/destinations/north-america/most-beautiful-places-in-the-caribbean/2023-12-10T10:00:15+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/sg/?p=47693beautiful places in the caribbean

Lush paradise, turquoise waters, idyllic getaway — these are all phrases often used to describe the beautiful places in the Caribbean. And though this collection of countries in the middle of the ocean contains a shared allure of natural wonders, each one also has its own history and cultural traditions.

I’ve been fortunate to visit a number of Caribbean nations, bordered by white, black, and pink sands below swaying palms, and it never grows old. The vendors with freshly plucked coconuts and plastic cups filled with dark rum to enjoy as the sun sinks into sherbet-coloured clouds. A plate of jerk chicken pulled from a charcoal-fired pit on the side of the road and splashed with mango chutney to cool the scotch bonnet. A parade of smiles and feathers and palatable joy as revellers make their way down the road for Carnival Tuesday. These are all moments that make the Caribbean beautiful.

Below, you’ll find a list of places that expand on that idea, from sustainable, jungle-shrouded hotels without any crowds to flavourful, farm-to-table experiences tucked on quiet hillsides. We tapped two Caribbean experts — writer, editor and on-air travel expert Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon and author and chef Adrian Forte — to help us compile a list of 25 of the most beautiful places in the Caribbean.

The most beautiful places in the Caribbean

Tahiti Beach, Bahamas

Tahiti beach

Located on the southern end of Elbow Cay in the Bahamas, and only accessible by foot, boat, or bike, Tahiti Beach stays with you long after you’ve left it. “As many times as I’ve been to the Caribbean and to the Bahamas, you’d think I’d be immune to the beauty of this sandbar, which disappears at high tide. But its silky white sand, surrounded by a swath of iconic Bahamian blue, stuns me every single time,” says Greaves-Gabbadon. Alaska Airlines also recently launched a number of nonstop flights from my hometown of Los Angeles to Nassau, so I’ll be heading back to the country for Carnival next year.

Canouan, St. Vincent and the Grenadines

beautiful places in the caribbean

Untouched by cruise ships and crowds, Canouan is a 3.2-square-mile (8.28 square kilometre) island in the Grenadines, just a 40-minute plane ride from Barbados. It’s home to the jungly Soho Beach House and the coral-hued beachfront Mandarin Oriental. Snorkeling here is also supreme, with water so vibrantly blue, it glows.

Petit St. Vincent, St. Vincent and the Grenadines

Petit St. Vincent

With 135 acres of private coastline floating in the Grenadines, Petit St. Vincent is a luxury resort with just 22 cottages steps away from cerulean waters. “Posh but unpretentious, this all-inclusive private island resort is a bit of a haul to reach (from Miami, it takes two planes, a golf cart, and a boat), but the journey is worth it,” says Greaves-Gabbadon. “When I’m not reading on the porch of my cottage (all serviced by butlers in a fleet of Mini Mokes), I like to hike up Marni Hill, laze on any (or all) of the four beaches, or sip a rum punch at the beach bar, Goatie’s.”

Jakes Hotel Treasure Beach, Jamaica

beautiful places in the caribbean

I can close my eyes and see the roads from Kingston — bumpy and winding — but worth the three-hour drive to reach this slice of solitude on Jamaica’s south coast. You won’t find high-rise hotels or crowds here. Upon arrival, it’s a straightaway to my home away from home at Jakes, a boutique hotel with seaside bungalows and villas spread about Treasure Beach’s rugged coastline. Spend a day at Jakes’ poolside bar, order a rum punch, and repeat. In the morning, have a filling breakfast of ackee and salt fish with fried plantain at the property’s restaurant. And, if you love to read like I do, come for the biannual Calabash International Literary Festival, a weekend that includes communing with some of the world’s greatest literary minds as they read from their work with lapping waves in the background.

Sheer Rocks, Antigua

Sheer Rocks

Located on a cliffside on Antigua’s west coast, this is dining with a view taken up a notch. “It doesn’t get much sexier than this waterfront restaurant at Cocobay Resort, where you can dine in cabanas built into the cliff’s edge and swim in ocean-view plunge pools between courses,” says Greaves-Gabbadon.

Stush in the Bush, Jamaica

This plant-based, farm-to-table experience is offered in the hills of St. Ann, near Ocho Rios. Here, the flavours of Jamaica are presented as a love letter to the surrounding terrain that produces the food. Owners Chris and Lisa Binns seek to connect visitors to the earth at every turn, with a farm tour and rustic dinner of rotating dishes that have included a Jamaican mezze board of crispy plantain chips, coconut-crusted yams, and pineapple croquettes.

Wild Cow Run, Turks and Caicos

beautiful places in the caribbean

One of the most beautiful places in the Caribbean, Grace Bay in Providenciales sees its fair share of visitors — and for good reason: The white-sand beach rivals those seen in the Maldives.

But go beyond Provo and you’ll reach Middle Caicos, the largest of the islands in Turks and Caicos, with a wild beauty of its own. “Few visitors ever venture far enough to see this wild and wonderful beach, secreted at the southern tip of Middle Caicos, so I feel fortunate to have been introduced to it by a resident,” says Greaves-Gabbadon. “Walk through the stand of casuarina trees shielding the beach from the road and you’ll be rewarded with quite a sight: two miles (3.21 km) of completely deserted, blinding-white sand that meets gin-clear water, knee-deep for almost a mile (1.6 km) out. If beach was a religion, this would be its cathedral.”

Jardin de Balata, Martinique

Jardin de Balata

Known for its world-class rums, Martinique has a slew of impressive beaches, too, from Le Diamant to Les Anses-d’Arlet. For a trip away from the island’s sandy shores, head to Jardin de Balata and learn why Martinique is called the “Island of Flowers.” At this thriving, three-hectare botanical garden just outside the capital of Fort-de-France, more than 3,000 varieties of flora and fauna bloom brightly. Take a canopy ride for panoramic views. And for cultural events, there’s Martinique’s three-day Carnival in February, where I’ve recently learned the crowd is entirely part of the parade in what’s called a vidé.

Grand Fond Natural Pools, St. Barts

On an island known for its exclusivity and luxury, visitors can opt for an adventure that only requires a good pair of walking shoes and a bathing suit. After a 30-minute walk along a winding path, you’ll reach two natural pools enclosed by craggy rocks jutting from the sea. If the waves are strong, it’s best to watch from a distance, but on a clear day, floating in the emerald-coloured water is simply magical.

Blue Hole, Jamaica

Jamaica

One of the most sought-after locations in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, the crystal-clear waters of the Blue Hole are surrounded by vegetation and a hilly interior. “This is a series of natural limestone sinkholes and lush untouched forestry. I visited with my fiancé and a few of our closest friends. The view from the top of the tropical falls is stunning, and if you’re the adventurous type like me, jumping off a 30-foot cliff makes you feel like you can conquer anything afterwards,” says Holmes.

Dominica

Nicknamed the “Nature Island,” Dominica is home to rain forests, bubbling rivers, ocean kayaking trails, and rushing waterfalls. A few of the island’s most beautiful natural wonders include Morne Trois Pitons National Park, Champagne Reef, and the Botanic Gardens. For an eco-friendly retreat, check into Coulibri Ridge, a 14-suite, off-the-grid luxury hotel that uses solar energy as its main power source and features an open-air yoga pavilion. For a black-sand beach escape, my favourite pick is Secret Bay, set on a secluded cliff with residential-style villas that have their own plunge pools. In February, the streets become filled with revellers for Dominica’s Mas Domnik Carnival celebration, which includes music competitions, a variety of parties, and masqueraders dressed in bright regalia.

Nayara Bocas del Toro, Panama

With 16 overwater villas, this adults-only eco-resort on a private island along the Caribbean coast does not disappoint. Flanked by three miles (4.82 km) of coral reefs teeming with sea life, snorkellers will have lots to explore at Nayara Bocas del Toro. Kayak, paddleboard, and swim directly from your room, but not before enjoying Caribbean breakfast classics like Johnny Cakes. Some villas here include glass floor panels for viewing underwater life, while two one-bedroom bamboo tree houses tower some 40 feet above the ground. The property also boasts the world’s first overwater beach, suspended on stilts and stretching 90 feet long by 20 feet wide.

Port of Spain, Trinidad

beautiful places in the caribbean

You’ve likely seen images of Trinidad’s Carnival — one of the greatest and most beautiful traditions in the Caribbean — but you may not know its origin, which is rooted in rebellion and celebration against all odds by enslaved West Africans. Today, Trinidad’s capital, Port of Spain, draws travellers from around the Caribbean, Europe, and even Japan to party into the early morning — rum in hand. My favourite moment of it all is J’ouvert — a call to meet the rising sun, bodies splashed in powder and paint — and Caesar’s Army’s A.M. Bush — a wild party that takes place in an open field. A word to the wise: Get tickets early, as Caesar’s Army events are always the most popular during Carnival. In 2024, the energy is sure to be as magnetic as ever.

Pigeon Point, Tobago

Easily one of the most picturesque beaches in the Caribbean, Pigeon Point contains all the elements of a postcard-perfect day: sugary white sand, strikingly turquoise water, and palm trees swaying slowly above it all. Located on the southwestern tip of Tobago, it’s a popular place for sunbathing and water sports, without much foot traffic or noise.

Oil Nut Bay, Virgin Gorda

beautiful places in the caribbean

Tucked in the North Sound area of Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands, Oil Nut Bay is 400 acres of luxurious relaxation. Visitors here will find a beach club with three pools and a swim-up bar; Nova, an overwater restaurant; and hiking trails with views overlooking the Caribbean. One of the villas, Compass Rose, spans 3,653 square feet and features two swimming pools. Another way to see the British Virgin Islands? The Moorings offer chartered catamarans and yachts to various destinations around the region, including Virgin Gorda, the less-frequented coral island of Anegada, and Saba Rock.

Grenada

Grenada

Nicknamed the Caribbean’s “Spice Isle” because of its abundance of cinnamon, nutmeg, and more, Grenada lures visitors with fewer crowds than neighbouring islands, beautiful Grand Anse Beach, the history of Jab Jab during Carnival season (when bodies are splashed in black oil and paint as a symbol of Black pride), and an addictive plate of crab back at BB’s. To take in the island’s beauty, drive up to Fort Frederick for a panoramic view. Want to learn more about the island? My favourite guide, Roger Augustine, provides the best tours on the island. When it’s time to find a hotel, my first choice is always the Black-owned Spice Island Beach Resort. Six Senses La Sagesse will also open in early 2024, stretching across 38 acres in the bucolic parish of St. David.

Jade Mountain, St. Lucia

Jade Mountain

Set between two beaches on St. Lucia’s southwestern coast, Jade Mountain offers views that seamlessly blend into its cliffside location above the Piton Mountains, plus rooms with 15-foot ceilings, infinity pools, and 24-hour butler service. Even from a distance while approaching by boat, it’s easily one of the most striking hotels in the Caribbean. Looking for a honeymoon location? This is it. It will be hard to leave your room, but if you do, the village of Soufrière, filled with great restaurants like Orlando’s and the island’s famous Sulphur Springs, is not far.

Yemaya Reefs, Little Corn Island

Past rows of mangroves and jungle, Yemaya Reefs on Little Corn Island reveals itself some 50 miles (80.46 km) off Nicaragua’s eastern coast. Step onto the sand and head to one of 16 individual casitas, some with plunge pools. Everything here is intimate, from the service to the communal yoga pavilion and thatched-roof restaurant. The food at Yemaya Reefs is particularly impressive, with dishes that celebrate Afro-Nicaraguan influences like gallo pinto (rice and beans) and rondón, a filling coconut-based stew with root vegetables and seafood like fish and crab. To get to Yemaya, you’ll need to take a 90-minute flight from the capital city of Managua, and then a 30-minute boat ride from Big Corn Island — all of which can be coordinated with the hotel.

Pinel Island, St. Martin

Pinel Island

A tropical nature reserve located just off the coast of St. Martin, Pinel Island checks off all the boxes for a memorable beach day: soft white sand, beachfront restaurants, and a number of water activities. The best way to spend the day here? Grab a table or beach lounger at Karibuni and choose from dishes like octopus ceviche or a platter of conch boudin and codfish fritters. The ocean views are worth admission alone.

[myaffiliate type="normal" button_name="Book your stay at Karibuni via Booking.com" url="https://www.booking.com/hotel/mf/karibuni-lodge.en-gb.html?aid=356980&label=gog235jc-1DCAsokAFCDmthcmlidW5pLWxvZGdlSDNYA2hsiAEBmAEJuAEXyAEM2AED6AEBiAIBqAIDuALQksCrBsACAdICJDlhODI5Y2JiLTUyNzYtNDViNS04Mjk0LTA5MDgxOWJlZDA0NNgCBOACAQ&sid=71a759f476efdc925754880a959dd178&dist=0&keep_landing=1&sb_price_type=total&type=total&" align="center" class="affiliate-nine"]

Flamenco Beach, Puerto Rico

When I first visited Flamenco Beach on the island of Culebra, I stood still for a few moments, knowing the short plane ride I feared was well worth this remote slice of beach in front of me. The horse-shaped bay with shallow turquoise waters can be reached via a 15-minute flight or a 1.5-hour ferry. Upon arriving, there are a number of food stalls to enjoy as well.

Ambergris Cay, Turks and Caicos

This 1,100-acre private island is a place to get away from it all, with 17 bungalows, eight villas, and a collection of privately owned homes and luxury accommodations. You’ll share the place with sunbathing iguanas and, if you’re lucky, a few whales in the distance. My favourite rooms are the beachfront suites with private plunge pools and an unobstructed view between the front door and the ocean.

La Cabane, Barbados

If you’re looking for the perfect Caribbean afternoon, this is your place. It includes all the necessary elements: good rum and wine; a pristine, uncrowded beach; and, of course, easy vibes. La Cabane on Barbados’ west coast provides a St. Tropez-style beach club experience without any unnecessary frills. Walk barefoot and order a lobster. While you wait, take a dip in Batts Rock Beach just steps away, and don’t leave without a rum punch. Another favourite? Cutters. “I’ve frequented Barbados for the last five years consecutively to attend the Food and Rum Festival. I can say, without a doubt, the best experience I’ve had on the island is at Cutters. They make the best rum punch in the world, using the best ingredients, including freshly pressed sugar cane for their simple syrup” says Forte.

Guana Island, British Virgin Islands

Total seclusion is king on this private island in the British Virgin Islands. “There are private island resorts and then there’s Guana Island, a private island resort that’s so exclusive, non-guests can’t even swing by for a drink or dinner. The result? A luxe, low-key getaway that’s reliably tranquil, and whose seven beaches you’ll share with a maximum of 31 other (lucky) guests,” says Greaves-Gabbadon.

Emara Estate, Turks and Caicos

For a gorgeous group getaway located on its own six acres, check into Emara Estate in Providenciales. One of the most beautiful places in the Caribbean, this 17-bedroom villa is tucked away on its own private peninsula, nestled between tropical trees. “It’s one of the most beautiful private villas I’ve been to — and it was also formerly owned by legendary musician Prince Rogers Nelson,” says Forte.

Piton Mountains, St. Lucia

Sprouting from the Caribbean Sea like a scene from Jurassic Park, these two volcanic plugs on St. Lucia’s southwestern coast leave me in awe every time I see them. While winding the hillsides of the country, the mountains peak out at various turns, but my favourite spot to view them is by boat or from the sand at Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort. Afterwards, head to the town of Soufrière and have lunch at Fedo’s. (Tip: Don’t skip the fresh juice of the day.)

Tis’ the season to be jolly, and what better way to deck the halls than with a Christmas tree that’s worth its weight in gold (almost literally)? Holiday decor goes beyond tinsel and ornaments, and it’s time to take a twinkling journey through some of the most expensive Christmas trees across the world.

What sets these extravagant Christmas trees apart is their break from tradition. No traditional evergreen boughs here, as our list features designs by sparkle-loving creators who prefer precious gems and metals over natural branches and leaves. After all, during the festivities, a touch of glamour can take the celebrations to a whole new level. So, only for a while, let’s trade the cosy fireplace for a world of opulence where diamonds, gold, and platinum turn an ordinary Christmas tree into a jaw-dropping masterpiece.

Abu Dhabi, not exactly synonymous with Christmas, surprised the world in 2010 by presenting the most expensive Christmas tree in history. Housed in the luxurious Emirates Palace Hotel, the tree itself wasn’t the costly part. Rather, it was the extravagant decorations that sent the price soaring. The tree is lavishly decorated with an array of gilded ornaments, including gold and jewel-encrusted baubles, creating a stunning visual spectacle. Gold is one of the hotel’s signature features, and it’s prominently featured in the Christmas tree’s design. Crowning the towering masterpiece is a star crafted from pure gold and adorned with diamonds and precious gems, significantly enhancing its value.

From bracelets and necklaces to watches and other unusually expensive ornaments, the tree is collectively adorned with a stunning array of 181 diamonds, pearls, emeralds, sapphires, and various other precious gemstones. Its impressive size, often towering over 43 feet, not only contributes to its grandeur but also requires an abundance of decorations, further elevating its cost.

Situated in the hotel’s grand atrium, this show-stopping fixture offers guests an immersive and luxurious festive experience, with the spectacular backdrop of the Emirates Palace Hotel enhancing the tree’s opulence, making it a symbol of extravagance and holiday spirit.

As reported by the BBC, the tree itself is valued at a modest USD 10,000 (SGD 13,315), but the jewellery adorning it, as stated by the hotel’s general manager Hans Olbertz, elevates its total worth to over USD 11 million (SGD 14,647,050). According to reports, the hotel has 24/7 security including four dedicated security guards closely watching the space. Phew!

Ginza, Tokyo doesn’t clinch the top spot, but its solid gold creation is nothing short of awe-inspiring. Standing at 2.4 metres tall, this USD 4.27 million (SGD 55,92,510) Christmas tree features 50 Disney characters crafted in pure gold. Weighing a total of 88 pounds, all in 24k, this tree is a true masterpiece and goes down in history to be one of the most expensive Christmas trees around the world. It took 10 skilled artisans two months to bring this Disney-themed treasure to life, making it a holiday spectacle like no other.

In 2015, Swarovski, in partnership with Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, unveiled its tallest Christmas tree in Asia. In collaboration with Malaysia’s premier shopping destination, a majestic Christmas tree was put up, impressively standing at 23 metres. It featured 175,000 clear crystals adorning over 3,100 crystal strands, collectively valued at over RM 3 million (USD 700,000/SGD 932,085). The tree was proudly showcased in the mall’s Centre Court, radiating its sparkling charm for all to enjoy.

Inspired by Swarovski’s festive collection designed with Miranda Kerr, the Christmas tree included heart, star, and snowflake ornaments, symbolising love, joy, and the spirit of the season. At its pinnacle, a large star-shaped crystallised ornament shone brilliantly, serving as a reminder of hope and the future.

Size isn’t everything when it comes to commanding attention. Takashimaya, Japan, inspired by Parisian flower boutique Claude Quinquaud, created a 40-centimetre (16-inch) tree adorned with preserved roses, each featuring an alleged total of 400 diamonds from Australia and Africa. Diamonds sparkle like dewdrops on the petals, making this tree a true masterpiece. An accompanying diamond pendant lends an added touch of luxury to this USD 1.8 million (SGD 23,96,790) creation.

Ginza Tanaka Jewelry Shop – Tabletop Tree (USD 1.95 million/SGD 25,96,522)

Ginza Tanaka, the renowned Japanese jewellery company, is celebrated for its craftsmanship in unconventional items. Its portfolio boasts a remarkable array of creations, including a dress meticulously assembled from precious coins, a swimsuit intricately woven from the finest gold threads, a calendar crafted entirely from this noble metal, and even a Santa Claus figurine.

However, the crowning jewel of the collection lies in its exquisite assortment of Christmas trees, each meticulously handcrafted from pure gold. In 2016, Ginza Tanaka in Tokyo took the stage with a 6.6-foot Christmas tree made from 42 pounds of pure 24-carat gold processed into thin golden wires. One of the world’s most expensive Christmas trees, this tree spreads Christmas cheer with a generous touch of grandeur.

In Washington, D.C., the tradition of a grand Christmas tree continues, dating back to 1964. This massive tree, sometimes exceeding 20 metres in height, is replanted right in front of the White House, roots and all, once it’s holiday-ready. Adorned with thousands of light bulbs, the logistics of transporting this conifer while ensuring its roots remain intact make it a million-dollar spectacle that both locals and visitors eagerly anticipate.

The price for putting on this extravagant display? A whopping USD 1 million (SGD 13,31,550).

In 2007, Singapore’s Bugis Junction shopping mall commissioned local jeweller Soo Kee to create a 6-metre, 3-ton Christmas tree adorned with 21,798 diamonds totalling 913 carats. With 3,762 crystal beads and 500 light bulbs, this dazzling creation was a sight to behold. To protect the expensive tree, it was placed under 24/7 surveillance, ensuring every precious gem remained untouched and secure.

In 2007, jeweller Steve Quick set out to create an elegant and charitable masterpiece. Fashioned from 18k of solid gold, this glistening Christmas tree is scattered with diamonds, evoking the image of crisp snow. Topping this golden creation is a star made from platinum and a 4.52-carat diamond, which can be detached and used as a pendant. An eBay auction of this exquisite tree raised funds for the American Cancer Society. Quick also introduced more affordable silver and gold-plated versions, ensuring that everyone could enjoy a touch of luxury.

Tokyo’s Ginza Tanaka, known for its affinity for gold, created a 12-kilogram solid gold Christmas tree, which, in today’s currency, is valued at USD 468,000 (SGD 623,165). Ginza, historically known as a mint, holds a reputation as a place where money was coined. It’s not just famous for its gold creations but also for its astronomical land values. Westerners find themselves right at home in this vibrant district, which has embraced Western influences since the 1872 fire that transformed the area. Ginza Tanaka’s creations are so opulent, that it’s no surprise the company features on the list of the most expensive Christmas trees more than once.

Over in London, the Sofitel London St. James Hotel pays homage to the city’s unique blend of pub culture and posh elegance. Their Christmas tree, priced at USD 55,000 (SGD 73,235), is far from traditional. It features a seemingly ordinary metal frame adorned with 200 miniature 24k gold bottles containing Louis XIII Grande Champagne Cognac.

Handcrafted by Baccarat masters, this tree also boasts an exclusive smoky-blue chandelier. To make the experience even more special, the hotel offered guests the chance to indulge in a USD 3,600 (SGD 4,793) Christmas spa package, complete with a gift of exquisite Baccarat decorations. Caution is advised when navigating this spectacular creation; starting from the top might be wise to avoid a potentially dizzying mishap.

I’ve Been Visiting This Remote Region In Northern Australia For More Than 2 Decades Nowhttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/sg/destinations/australia-and-south-pacific/top-end-in-northern-territory-of-australia-is-a-must-visit/2023-12-10T06:00:44+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/sg/?p=45933Northern australia

Australia is best known for its beautiful beaches, iconic landmarks, friendly people, and varied wildlife. Its sheer size, on the other hand (it’s the sixth-largest country on the planet), often takes visitors by surprise.

There’s no better example of this than the Top End region of the Northern Territory — to put this into perspective, the Northern Territory is double the size of Texas with less than one percent of its population. The contrasting landscapes here, including coral coastlines, vast floodplains, rocky escarpments, and the ochre sands of the outback, are astounding.

Here’s why Top End in the Northern Territory of Australia should be on everyone’s list

I first visited the Top End in 1999 while scouting for ideas and experiences that would fit an experiential luxury traveller. In those days, Google was in its infancy and the main way to research travel experiences was through personal connections, making phone call after phone call, and exploring destinations and connecting with locals.

Disembarking the plane in the city of Darwin, in the northern part of Australia, I was struck by the sheer scale of this remote landscape — the ruggedness of the outback juxtaposed against the lush, green backdrop of the tropics. The air was warm and muggy. There was a lingering smell of smoke from the traditional Indigenous land management practice of burning native savanna early in the dry season using small fires, lit in mosaic patterns to avoid the buildup of highly flammable undergrowth. It felt like being in another world.

[inline_related_article article_id="36314,19120"]

I began my Top End adventure in Arnhem Land, one of the largest parcels of Aboriginal-owned land in Australia. It comprises 37,000 square miles (95830 square km) of untouched wilderness and culturally significant sites and requires a special permit to visit. Only a few select guides are granted access to this area.

It’s here that I encountered an older hunter, Ray, who had the look of a British captain with a fine moustache and slicked-back hair. Ray worked for Umorrduk Safaris, one of the few operators in the region at the time.

With Ray as my guide, we toured the ancient landscapes of the region, from the coral-laden coastline to the secluded billabongs (crescent-shaped lakes) and rocky peaks. Wildlife was plentiful — giant saltwater crocodiles, wallabies, dingoes, wild boar, and some 280 bird species live here.

The Top End region is one of the last true frontiers of Australia that, to this day, remains relatively untouched. Travellers here can expect to encounter some of the best natural history experiences in the country. The best way to visit is with a local, private guide, who can interpret the land, the First People who call it home, and ancient stories.

Named after Greek mythology’s popular hero, the Tower of Hercules stands proudly at the entrance of A Coruña harbour in Spain. Believed to be the oldest functional lighthouse in the world, it dates back to the first century (AD). According to UNESCO, the first 34 metres (111.54 feet) of this majestic 55-metre (180.44 feet) structure showcases iconic Roman architecture. The remaining 21 metres (68.89 feet) were restored in the 18th century under the supervision of architect Eustaquio Giannini.

The historic city of Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu is home to both the modern and ancient Mahabalipuram Lighthouses, located very close to each other. The modern one, completed in 1904, contrasts with the old one, dating back to the eighth century, constructed under the reign of Pallava king Mahendravarman I (600-630 CE). This artistic structure on top of the popular Mahishasura Mardini cave temple in Mahabalipuram, also known as the Olakaneeswara temple, is the oldest lighthouse in India. It is part of the Group of Monuments designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984.

This 36-metre structure (118.11 feet), standing about 67 metres (219.81 feet) above the ground, is probably the highest lighthouse along the Baltic Sea. As one of the most important trade routes in Northern Europe passed through the island of Hiiumaa, there was a requirement for a lighthouse to help mariners navigate their way in the Baltic Sea. Due to claims of ship losses by merchants, the construction of Kõpu Lighthouse was undertaken, which spanned approximately 40 years. After undergoing massive changes since its inception in 1531, a new LED system was introduced in 2020.

The first, made from timber by Henry Winstanley in 1698, was followed by the second, made of oak and iron, designed by John Rudyerd. The third one was built by John Smeaton using interlocking stones, and the current one, standing tall at 40 metres (133 feet), was designed by Sir James N. Douglass in 1882.

This Is The Best City For Luxury Shopping, According To New Datahttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/sg/news/tokyo-is-the-best-city-for-luxury-shopping/2023-12-10T02:00:56+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/sg/?p=47970tokyo shopping

There’s nothing better than finding the perfect souvenir on vacation. Getting that little something special can help you fondly remember this particular trip for years to come. But, rather than pick up any old bauble, why not make it something … fancy? For that, you’ll have to head to the city that was just named the world’s best for luxury shopping — and no, it’s not Paris or Milan.

Lartisien, an agency offering bespoke travel experiences, unveiled its list of the top 10 best cities in the world for luxury shopping. To come to its conclusion, the editors at Lartisien crunched the numbers on who had the most designer stores across “cities with prestigious reputations.” After parsing the data, it ranked Tokyo as No. 1.

Tokyo is the best destination for luxury shopping

“Tokyo’s fashion reputation — spurred by the inspiring street style and Rakuten Fashion Week — constantly attracts shopping lovers to the city,” the team wrote in the findings. “According to our research, Tokyo is the best city in the world for luxury shopping. We found that Japan’s capital had 217 designer stores — the most in our analysis — with Armani having the biggest presence.”

The findings noted that many of the city’s high-end designer shops reside in Ginza (fitting, as the name “Ginza” means “silver mint” in Japanese), including the must-see seven-floor Louis Vuitton and the upmarket shopping complex, Ginza Six.

As for the second-best city for shopping, that honour went to Hong Kong, which Lartisien noted has 211 designer stores. “The choice is plentiful for shoppers in Hong Kong, from the Landmark and Elements malls to the many flagship stores,” it wrote, adding that while the city doesn’t have as many shops as Tokyo, it is home to the highest number of “ultra-high-net-worth individuals” on Earth, who are more than happy to shell out big bucks for designer duds.

Lartisien named  Seoul, Paris, and New York City it’s third, fourth, and fifth-best spots to shop. So, are you ready to find that special — likely very expensive — souvenir? Check out the website’s entire top 10 spots to shop at lartisien.com.

The newest mall in Bangkok may have just opened its doors last week but it already has a festive market you could visit—that is, if you can handle the crowds. Located in the middle of the ground floor, EmSphere’s market boasts a variety of things for you to enjoy from drinks to food. There are also some seats and tables for you to enjoy your delicacies there and then, but again, it’s going to be a bit of a challenge with the crowds. There’s no definite date as to when this market will end but it will probably be around January, so pay a visit soon.
