Raised in a household blending traditions, my father’s cooking of traditional Peranakan dishes for occasions like Chinese New Year and Christmas was a cornerstone. Living in a culturally diverse country fuels my culinary exploration, connecting the past with exciting new tastes. @aarondotk

25 Most Beautiful Places In The Caribbean — From Emerald-Coloured Sinkholes To Private Islandshttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/th/destinations/north-america/most-beautiful-places-in-the-caribbean/2023-12-11T01:00:08+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/th/?p=47371beautiful places in the caribbean

Lush paradise, turquoise waters, idyllic getaway — these are all phrases often used to describe the beautiful places in the Caribbean. And though this collection of countries in the middle of the ocean contains a shared allure of natural wonders, each one also has its own history and cultural traditions.

I’ve been fortunate to visit a number of Caribbean nations, bordered by white, black, and pink sands below swaying palms, and it never grows old. The vendors with freshly plucked coconuts and plastic cups filled with dark rum to enjoy as the sun sinks into sherbet-coloured clouds. A plate of jerk chicken pulled from a charcoal-fired pit on the side of the road and splashed with mango chutney to cool the scotch bonnet. A parade of smiles and feathers and palatable joy as revellers make their way down the road for Carnival Tuesday. These are all moments that make the Caribbean beautiful.

Below, you’ll find a list of places that expand on that idea, from sustainable, jungle-shrouded hotels without any crowds to flavourful, farm-to-table experiences tucked on quiet hillsides. We tapped two Caribbean experts — writer, editor and on-air travel expert Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon and author and chef Adrian Forte — to help us compile a list of 25 of the most beautiful places in the Caribbean.

The most beautiful places in the Caribbean

Tahiti Beach, Bahamas

Located on the southern end of Elbow Cay in the Bahamas, and only accessible by foot, boat, or bike, Tahiti Beach stays with you long after you’ve left it. “As many times as I’ve been to the Caribbean and to the Bahamas, you’d think I’d be immune to the beauty of this sandbar, which disappears at high tide. But its silky white sand, surrounded by a swath of iconic Bahamian blue, stuns me every single time,” says Greaves-Gabbadon. Alaska Airlines also recently launched a number of nonstop flights from my hometown of Los Angeles to Nassau, so I’ll be heading back to the country for Carnival next year.

Canouan, St. Vincent and the Grenadines

Untouched by cruise ships and crowds, Canouan is a 3.2-square-mile (8.28 square kilometre) island in the Grenadines, just a 40-minute plane ride from Barbados. It’s home to the jungly Soho Beach House and the coral-hued beachfront Mandarin Oriental. Snorkeling here is also supreme, with water so vibrantly blue, it glows.

Petit St. Vincent, St. Vincent and the Grenadines

Petit St. Vincent

With 135 acres of private coastline floating in the Grenadines, Petit St. Vincent is a luxury resort with just 22 cottages steps away from cerulean waters. “Posh but unpretentious, this all-inclusive private island resort is a bit of a haul to reach (from Miami, it takes two planes, a golf cart, and a boat), but the journey is worth it,” says Greaves-Gabbadon. “When I’m not reading on the porch of my cottage (all serviced by butlers in a fleet of Mini Mokes), I like to hike up Marni Hill, laze on any (or all) of the four beaches, or sip a rum punch at the beach bar, Goatie’s.”

Jakes Hotel Treasure Beach, Jamaica

beautiful places in the caribbean

I can close my eyes and see the roads from Kingston — bumpy and winding — but worth the three-hour drive to reach this slice of solitude on Jamaica’s south coast. You won’t find high-rise hotels or crowds here. Upon arrival, it’s a straightaway to my home away from home at Jakes, a boutique hotel with seaside bungalows and villas spread about Treasure Beach’s rugged coastline. Spend a day at Jakes’s poolside bar, order a rum punch, and repeat. In the morning, have a filling breakfast of ackee and salt fish with fried plantain at the property’s restaurant. And, if you love to read like I do, come for the biannual Calabash International Literary Festival, a weekend that includes communing with some of the world’s greatest literary minds as they read from their work with lapping waves in the background.

Sheer Rocks, Antigua

Sheer Rocks

Located on a cliffside on Antigua’s west coast, this is dining with a view taken up a notch. “It doesn’t get much sexier than this waterfront restaurant at Cocobay Resort, where you can dine in cabanas built into the cliff’s edge and swim in ocean-view plunge pools between courses,” says Greaves-Gabbadon.

[myaffiliate type="normal" button_name="Book your stay at Cocobay Resort Antigua - All Inclusive - Adults Only via Booking.com" url="https://www.booking.com/hotel/ag/cocobay-resort.en-gb.html?aid=356980&label=gog235jc-1DCAsoBEIOY29jb2JheS1yZXNvcnRIM1gDaGyIAQGYAQm4ARfIAQzYAQPoAQGIAgGoAgO4AsSBwKsGwAIB0gIkNzhiMzI2ZmItMjc2ZS00ZWY3LWFkZmEtODIwMGMzNTg1OGRi2AIE4AIB&sid=71a759f476efdc925754880a959dd178&dist=0&keep_landing=1&sb_price_type=total&type=total&" align="center" class="affiliate-three"]

Stush in the Bush, Jamaica

This plant-based, farm-to-table experience is offered in the hills of St. Ann, near Ocho Rios. Here, the flavours of Jamaica are presented as a love letter to the surrounding terrain that produces the food. Owners Chris and Lisa Binns seek to connect visitors to the earth at every turn, with a farm tour and rustic dinner of rotating dishes that have included a Jamaican mezze board of crispy plantain chips, coconut-crusted yams, and pineapple croquettes.

Wild Cow Run, Turks and Caicos

beautiful places in the caribbean

One of the most beautiful places in the Caribbean, Grace Bay in Providenciales sees its fair share of visitors — and for good reason: The white-sand beach rivals those seen in the Maldives.

But go beyond Provo and you’ll reach Middle Caicos, the largest of the islands in Turks and Caicos, with a wild beauty of its own. “Few visitors ever venture far enough to see this wild and wonderful beach, secreted at the southern tip of Middle Caicos, so I feel fortunate to have been introduced to it by a resident,” says Greaves-Gabbadon. “Walk through the stand of casuarina trees shielding the beach from the road and you’ll be rewarded with quite a sight: two miles (3.21 km) of completely deserted, blinding-white sand that meets gin-clear water, knee-deep for almost a mile (1.6 km) out. If beach was a religion, this would be its cathedral.”

Jardin de Balata, Martinique

Jardin de Balata

Known for its world-class rums, Martinique has a slew of impressive beaches, too, from Le Diamant to Les Anses-d’Arlet. For a trip away from the island’s sandy shores, head to Jardin de Balata and learn why Martinique is called the “Island of Flowers.” At this thriving, three-hectare botanical garden just outside the capital of Fort-de-France, more than 3,000 varieties of flora and fauna bloom brightly. Take a canopy ride for panoramic views. And for cultural events, there’s Martinique’s three-day Carnival in February, where I’ve recently learned the crowd is entirely part of the parade in what’s called a vidé.

Grand Fond Natural Pools, St. Barts

beautiful places in the caribbean

On an island known for its exclusivity and luxury, visitors can opt for an adventure that only requires a good pair of walking shoes and a bathing suit. After a 30-minute walk along a winding path, you’ll reach two natural pools enclosed by craggy rocks jutting from the sea. If the waves are strong, it’s best to watch from a distance, but on a clear day, floating in the emerald-coloured water is simply magical.

Blue Hole, Jamaica

Jamaica

One of the most sought-after locations in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, the crystal-clear waters of the Blue Hole are surrounded by vegetation and a hilly interior. “This is a series of natural limestone sinkholes and lush untouched forestry. I visited with my fiancé and a few of our closest friends. The view from the top of the tropical falls is stunning, and if you’re the adventurous type like me, jumping off a 30-foot cliff makes you feel like you can conquer anything afterwards,” says Holmes.

Dominica

beautiful places in the caribbean
Image Credit: Joseph Thomas Photography/Getty Images

Nicknamed the “Nature Island,” Dominica is home to rain forests, bubbling rivers, ocean kayaking trails, and rushing waterfalls. A few of the island’s most beautiful natural wonders include Morne Trois Pitons National Park, Champagne Reef, and the Botanic Gardens. For an eco-friendly retreat, check into Coulibri Ridge, a 14-suite, off-the-grid luxury hotel that uses solar energy as its main power source and features an open-air yoga pavilion. For a black-sand beach escape, my favourite pick is Secret Bay, set on a secluded cliff with residential-style villas that have their own plunge pools. In February, the streets become filled with revellers for Dominica’s Mas Domnik Carnival celebration, which includes music competitions, a variety of parties, and masqueraders dressed in bright regalia.

[myaffiliate type="normal" button_name="Book your stay at Secret Bay via Booking.com" url="https://www.booking.com/hotel/dm/secret-bay.en-gb.html?aid=356980&label=gog235jc-1DCAsoPkIKc2VjcmV0LWJheUgzWANobIgBAZgBCbgBF8gBDNgBA-gBAYgCAagCA7gCnIfAqwbAAgHSAiQ4MmQ2ODY3Ny0xM2IxLTQzOGItYmM3ZC1hM2FlMzg0ZWQ3OTPYAgTgAgE&sid=71a759f476efdc925754880a959dd178&dist=0&keep_landing=1&sb_price_type=total&type=total&" align="center" class="affiliate-four"]

Nayara Bocas del Toro, Panama

Panama
Image Credit: Nayara Bocas del Toro Treehouses

With 16 overwater villas, this adults-only eco-resort on a private island along the Caribbean coast does not disappoint. Flanked by three miles (4.82 km) of coral reefs teeming with sea life, snorkellers will have lots to explore at Nayara Bocas del Toro. Kayak, paddleboard, and swim directly from your room, but not before enjoying Caribbean breakfast classics like Johnny Cakes. Some villas here include glass floor panels for viewing underwater life, while two one-bedroom bamboo tree houses tower some 40 feet above the ground. The property also boasts the world’s first overwater beach, suspended on stilts and stretching 90 feet long by 20 feet wide.

Port of Spain, Trinidad

beautiful places in the caribbean

You’ve likely seen images of Trinidad’s Carnival — one of the greatest and most beautiful traditions in the Caribbean — but you may not know its origin, which is rooted in rebellion and celebration against all odds by enslaved West Africans. Today, Trinidad’s capital, Port of Spain, draws travellers from around the Caribbean, Europe, and even Japan to party into the early morning — rum in hand. My favourite moment of it all is J’ouvert — a call to meet the rising sun, bodies splashed in powder and paint — and Caesar’s Army’s A.M. Bush — a wild party that takes place in an open field. A word to the wise: Get tickets early, as Caesar’s Army events are always the most popular during Carnival. In 2024, the energy is sure to be as magnetic as ever.

Pigeon Point, Tobago

Pigeon point

Easily one of the most picturesque beaches in the Caribbean, Pigeon Point contains all the elements of a postcard-perfect day: sugary white sand, strikingly turquoise water, and palm trees swaying slowly above it all. Located on the southwestern tip of Tobago, it’s a popular place for sunbathing and water sports, without much foot traffic or noise.

Oil Nut Bay, Virgin Gorda

beautiful places in the caribbean

Tucked in the North Sound area of Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands, Oil Nut Bay is 400 acres of luxurious relaxation. Visitors here will find a beach club with three pools and a swim-up bar; Nova, an overwater restaurant; and hiking trails with views overlooking the Caribbean. One of the villas, Compass Rose, spans 3,653 square feet and features two swimming pools. Another way to see the British Virgin Islands? The Moorings offer chartered catamarans and yachts to various destinations around the region, including Virgin Gorda, the less-frequented coral island of Anegada, and Saba Rock.

Grenada

Grenada

Nicknamed the Caribbean’s “Spice Isle” because of its abundance of cinnamon, nutmeg, and more, Grenada lures visitors with fewer crowds than neighbouring islands, beautiful Grand Anse Beach, the history of Jab Jab during Carnival season (when bodies are splashed in black oil and paint as a symbol of Black pride), and an addictive plate of crab back at BB’s. To take in the island’s beauty, drive up to Fort Frederick for a panoramic view. Want to learn more about the island? My favourite guide, Roger Augustine, provides the best tours on the island. When it’s time to find a hotel, my first choice is always the Black-owned Spice Island Beach Resort. Six Senses La Sagesse will also open in early 2024, stretching across 38 acres in the bucolic parish of St. David.

Jade Mountain, St. Lucia

Jade Mountain

Set between two beaches on St. Lucia’s southwestern coast, Jade Mountain offers views that seamlessly blend into its cliffside location above the Piton Mountains, plus rooms with 15-foot ceilings, infinity pools, and 24-hour butler service. Even from a distance while approaching by boat, it’s easily one of the most striking hotels in the Caribbean. Looking for a honeymoon location? This is it. It will be hard to leave your room, but if you do, the village of Soufrière, filled with great restaurants like Orlando’s and the island’s famous Sulphur Springs, is not far.

Yemaya Reefs, Little Corn Island

Past rows of mangroves and jungle, Yemaya Reefs on Little Corn Island reveals itself some 50 miles (80.46 km) off Nicaragua’s eastern coast. Step onto the sand and head to one of 16 individual casitas, some with plunge pools. Everything here is intimate, from the service to the communal yoga pavilion and thatched-roof restaurant. The food at Yemaya Reefs is particularly impressive, with dishes that celebrate Afro-Nicaraguan influences like gallo pinto (rice and beans) and rondón, a filling coconut-based stew with root vegetables and seafood like fish and crab. To get to Yemaya, you’ll need to take a 90-minute flight from the capital city of Managua, and then a 30-minute boat ride from Big Corn Island — all of which can be coordinated with the hotel.

Pinel Island, St. Martin

Pinel Island

A tropical nature reserve located just off the coast of St. Martin, Pinel Island checks off all the boxes for a memorable beach day: soft white sand, beachfront restaurants, and a number of water activities. The best way to spend the day here? Grab a table or beach lounger at Karibuni and choose from dishes like octopus ceviche or a platter of conch boudin and codfish fritters. The ocean views are worth admission alone.

Flamenco Beach, Puerto Rico

When I first visited Flamenco Beach on the island of Culebra, I stood still for a few moments, knowing the short plane ride I feared was well worth this remote slice of beach in front of me. The horse-shaped bay with shallow turquoise waters can be reached via a 15-minute flight or a 1.5-hour ferry. Upon arriving, there are a number of food stalls to enjoy as well.

Ambergris Cay, Turks and Caicos

This 1,100-acre private island is a place to get away from it all, with 17 bungalows, eight villas, and a collection of privately owned homes and luxury accommodations. You’ll share the place with sunbathing iguanas and, if you’re lucky, a few whales in the distance. My favourite rooms are the beachfront suites with private plunge pools and an unobstructed view between the front door and the ocean.

La Cabane, Barbados

If you’re looking for the perfect Caribbean afternoon, this is your place. It includes all the necessary elements: good rum and wine; a pristine, uncrowded beach; and, of course, easy vibes. La Cabane on Barbados’ west coast provides a St. Tropez-style beach club experience without any unnecessary frills. Walk barefoot and order a lobster. While you wait, take a dip in Batts Rock Beach just steps away, and don’t leave without a rum punch. Another favourite? Cutters. “I’ve frequented Barbados for the last five years consecutively to attend the Food and Rum Festival. I can say, without a doubt, the best experience I’ve had on the island is at Cutters. They make the best rum punch in the world, using the best ingredients, including freshly pressed sugar cane for their simple syrup” says Forte.

Guana Island, British Virgin Islands

Total seclusion is king on this private island in the British Virgin Islands. “There are private island resorts and then there’s Guana Island, a private island resort that’s so exclusive, non-guests can’t even swing by for a drink or dinner. The result? A luxe, low-key getaway that’s reliably tranquil, and whose seven beaches you’ll share with a maximum of 31 other (lucky) guests,” says Greaves-Gabbadon.

Emara Estate, Turks and Caicos

For a gorgeous group getaway located on its own six acres, check into Emara Estate in Providenciales. One of the most beautiful places in the Caribbean, this 17-bedroom villa is tucked away on its own private peninsula, nestled between tropical trees. “It’s one of the most beautiful private villas I’ve been to — and it was also formerly owned by legendary musician Prince Rogers Nelson,” says Forte.

Piton Mountains, St. Lucia

Sprouting from the Caribbean Sea like a scene from Jurassic Park, these two volcanic plugs on St. Lucia’s southwestern coast leave me in awe every time I see them. While winding the hillsides of the country, the mountains peak out at various turns, but my favourite spot to view them is by boat or from the sand at Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort. Afterwards, head to the town of Soufrière and have lunch at Fedo’s. (Tip: Don’t skip the fresh juice of the day.)

How To Spend 3 Days In Paris — Luxury Hotels, Natural Wine Spots & Offbeat Museumshttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/th/travel-tips/trip-planning/perfect-paris-trip-itinerary-according-to-a-local/2023-12-10T11:00:17+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/th/?p=47284paris trip

On a recent layover in Paris, I spent 15 minutes weeping outside a boulangerie, hands clutching my croissant like a stress ball as I spiralled into decision-paralysis mode. How do I make the most of 24 hours here? I asked myself, my mind racing over how to fit a week’s worth of Paris explorations into one day trip. The answer ended up being: Stop stressing. Walk around. Eat the crushed croissant, and drink a glass of wine with lunch.

Paris provides endless temptations: art and architecture, Michelin-star restaurants, unrivalled vintage shopping, and four-euro wine. There’s no way to do it all, so allowing yourself some grace to wander aimlessly — the French call it flânerie — is key to making the most of your trip. To that end, I suggest basing yourself around the incredibly walkable Marais, which marries classic Parisian architecture with hip restaurants and shops. I’d spring for the new cool-kid hideaway, Le Grand Mazarin, a maximalist hotel that boasts an indoor pool and hammam to revive you after a long day.

Plan your three-day trip to Paris according to a longtime Francophile’s suggestions

Here, I’ve curated a jam-packed three-day itinerary for a quick trip to Paris, in a bid to prevent myself and everyone else from ever ruining a perfectly good croissant out of choice anxiety again. Pick what works for you, skip what doesn’t (but not Musée Bourdelle). Keep in mind that many of the city’s attractions and restaurants close on Sunday and or Monday, so be sure to check their hours in advance. Whatever you do, I hope you people-watch at a cafe somewhere, lingering long enough to convince yourself you might be picking up French by osmosis. I hope you notice how the limestone avenues absorb the light, and maybe a little piece of you, too.

Day 1

After an overnight flight, I always start my day with my favourite French comfort food: a galette complète from Breizh Café, which has several outposts around the city that whip up some of the best buckwheat crepes in Paris. Tucking into their famous complète oignons — layers of ham and Comté cheese topped with a sunny-side-up egg and onions decadently caramelised in cider from Brittany — is the warmest welcome you’ll find in the French capital.

Walk off your breakfast with a stroll through the Marais, making your way toward beloved concept store Merci to satisfy all your souvenir needs, from stationery to expertly curated home goods, clothing, and beyond. If jet lag is setting in, grab a coffee at their Used Book Café, or down the road at the oft-Instagrammed Boot Café.

Mosey over to Place des Vosges, the oldest square in the city. In the warmer months, it’s a lively picnic destination for locals and tourists alike. The manicured trees, stone fountains, and red brick archways surrounding the leafy square are stunning from any angle, but if you’re looking to experience the square’s royal history from a whole new perspective, consider splurging on a room at Cour des Vosges. The refined five-star hotel offers luxuriously intimate accommodations without fuss or ostentation — plus, exclusive views onto the square from the comfort of your bed.

Hidden just beyond the square are the courtyard and gardens of the Hôtel de Sully, a quieter green space offering a wonderful respite from the bustling Rue Saint-Antoine. From there, walk down to the Seine River and cross over to Île Saint-Louis, a jewel-sized island where you can admire the elegant 17th-century architecture and stop by L’Étiquette, a beloved natural wine spot that offers takeaway bottles and wine tastings with the owner, Hervé.

While the Notre Dame Cathedral is still under renovation (it’s set to reopen in December 2024), you can still admire its striking Gothic facade before walking to nearby Shakespeare and Company, the city’s famous English-language bookstore.

Post up at the counter of L’Avant Comptoir de la Terre for a light lunch of Basque-style tapas (don’t skip the seared foie gras) and, oui, more wine. Afterwards, wander around the chic side streets of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, home to Paris institutions like Les Deux Magots and Café de Flore, plus a bevvy of art galleries and upscale shops that are better to visit here than on the over-crowded Champs-Élysées; some favourites for window shopping include Le Bon Marché (the Left Bank’s grand dame department store), the fabulously decorated Hermès flagship, and Officine Universelle Buly, which crafts spectacular candles that make for ultra-chic souvenirs. If you’re up for it, pause to people-watch at the always-bustling Bar du Marché before heading back to your hotel to rest up before dinner.

To finish the day, book a table in the bustling 11th arrondissement at Le Bistrot Paul Bert, which serves elevated comfort food — think steak frites, seafood, and epic desserts — that’s earned a devout fan base.

Day 2

Paris Museum
Image Credit: Sophie Dodd/Travel + Leisure

Today’s the day to pack in your museum visits and sightseeing. Wake up early and grab breakfast at your hotel, or treat yourself to a top-notch coffee and croissant at Café Loustic, which has always made me feel at home.

Walk over to the Louvre, where you should arrive 30 minutes before opening if you’re hoping to snap a selfie with the Mona Lisa. Frankly, if you only have three days, I’d skip it in favour of visiting some of the city’s other world-class museums — but be sure to at least stroll around the iconic I. M. Pei-designed glass pyramid and the historic courtyard. While you could head straight to the Tuileries Garden from here, I love to detour to the Palais-Royal Garden first, an oasis that’s home to a picture-perfect fountain rimmed by those iconic green Sénat chairs.

Pass through the palace’s inner courtyard on your way there, where you can scramble around Daniel Buren’s famous black-and-white Colonnes de Buren installation. Just beyond the garden is Galerie Vivienne, a breathtaking 19th-century covered passage with mosaic floors, antique glass ceilings, and a delightful bookshop. When I think about some of the places that first sparked my love of Paris more than a decade ago, these are what come to mind.

Make your way back to the Tuileries Garden and on to your next museum. Impressionist lovers who are short on time should prioritise the Musée de l’Orangerie to bask in the beauty of Monet’s “Water Lilies,” or plan to linger a little longer across the river at the expansive Musée d’Orsay, which is housed in a former Beaux-Arts train station.

[inline_related_article article_id="25871,15344"]

Sculpture fans should check out the nearby Musée Rodin, or consider the worthwhile trek into Montparnasse to be blown away by the works and former studio of sculptor Antoine Bourdelle at the lesser-known Musée Bourdelle. Whichever museums you choose to visit, be sure to book your ticket in advance to avoid massive lines.

For lunch, book the three-course tasting menu at Substance, a sleek and modern Michelin-starred restaurant in the 16th arrondissement that boasts one of the finest Champagne lists in all of Paris. It’s right around the corner from Place du Trocadéro, an elevated (but typically tourist-swarmed) plaza that offers sweeping views of the Eiffel Tower.

From there, hop on the metro line 6 (or in a taxi, if you prefer) to the Arc de Triomphe. The panoramic view from the top is both fantastic and incredibly crowded; I’d rather enjoy the cityscape later on with a drink in hand at Bonnie, SO/Paris hotel’s trendy terrace restaurant that’s back over in the fourth arrondissement. But first, take your time wandering the iconic Champs-Élysées, making your way toward the storied Place de la Concorde — the famous site of Marie Antoinette’s beheading by guillotine. Chances are, you might need a drink after that; duck into Hôtel de Crillon, A Rosewood Hotel, to check out the opulent Bar Les Ambassadeurs. (Pro tip: Be sure to snap a selfie in the marble bathroom.)

Stick around the area for dinner. Try to nab a table at the ultra-trendy Hotel Costes — reservations are hard to come by, but the red-lit atmosphere is glamorous, and the legendary DJ sets continue late into the night.

Day 3

Museum
Image Credit: Sophie Dodd/Travel + Leisure

For a new perspective on the city, take yourself up the steep steps of Montmartre, Paris’ longtime artist haven. You’ll beat the crowds if you arrive early in the morning, and the best place to start is Place Dalida, where you’ll be rewarded with a bucolic view of Sacré-Coeur Basilica. Climbing the cobbled slope of Rue de l’Abreuvoir is a chance to travel back in time, bearing witness to a nostalgic snapshot of what this neighbourhood used to feel like. Whatever the season, this street is utterly charming — bursting with wisteria in summer and framed by red and golden leaves in autumn. Pass by the pink facade of La Maison Rose to snap some classic shots on your way up to Le Clos Montmartre, Paris’ only vineyard. (It’s privately owned, but guided tours are organised a few times per year.)

This part of the city feels like walking through a film set — it’s all steep stone steps framed by vintage street lamps, with a sprinkling of cherry-lit bistros thrown in. To that end, peek around Place du Tertre, a definitively touristy but still-charming square (if you get there ahead of the crowds, that is), which is filled with artists who will ask to paint your portrait. (Note: This area is known for pickpocketing, so keep your belongings secure.) Next, ogle the majesty of Sacré-Coeur, which offers one of the most spectacular views of Paris spread out below.

If it’s still early enough, head over to the Musée de la Vie Romantique (Museum of Romantic Life) for a coffee and pastry at the Rose Bakery tearoom, tucked into their unsurprisingly romantic courtyard and greenhouse. But don’t spoil your appetite — you won’t want to miss the inventive small plates and next-level wine list at Mokonuts, an intimate lunch spot run by a Japanese-Lebanese couple serving up what has consistently ranked among my favourite meals in Paris. The food is fantastic, the 11th arrondissement space is unfussy, and the reservations are hard to come by (call and hope for a cancellation — it happens more often than you’d think). Order the entire menu (it’s small), including at least two desserts. Trust me.

If it’s warm out, go lounge along Canal Saint-Martin or the banks of the Seine, where locals picnic, read, smoke, and smooch — take your pick. On colder days, round off your museum visits with a trip to the Centre Pompidou for modern art or Musée Carnavalet (housed in two fabulous mansions) to delve into the history of Paris.

For dinner, few restaurants charm so instantly as Le Clown Bar — famous for its veal brains and sweetbreads, I choose to go for the delightfully kitschy Belle Époque clown decor. On a recent trip, I skipped the brains and went for the Japanese-inspired beef tartare — a few days have passed that I haven’t thought about it. There’s an abundance of natural wine that will appeal to a range of palates, including those who think natural wine is “too funky.”

If you’re looking for a nightcap (it’s your last night in Paris!), Little Red Door serves up exceptional and inventive cocktails around the corner.

Paris in one day

France
Image Credit: Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

If you’ve only got one day in Paris — perhaps you’re on a long layover — you’ll need to remind yourself from the beginning: You can’t do it all. I’ve nearly ruined several brief trips by thinking about all the things I should have packed in, rather than feeling present in the few that I was able to manage.

If it’s your first time, I’d combine the itineraries for days one and two. Base yourself a bit more central to the main attractions — for a night of absolute pampering, treat yourself to a stay at Hôtel de Crillon, A Rosewood Hotel, or Le Meurice — two luxury properties just off the Tuileries Garden. Wake up early and indulge in room service or grab a fresh croissant from a boulangerie near your hotel, and savour every second of that interaction — the greasy bag, the warm dough, the flaky mess of it all. Start at the Palais-Royal Garden and Galerie Vivienne before ducking over to see Notre Dame.

Unless you’re a serious art history buff, I’d avoid spending your one day inside a museum, but you should still wander around the Louvre courtyard and Tuileries Garden — Le Cafe Marly is a pricey lunch but offers classic French dishes served with iconic views of the pyramid.

Grab the metro over to Place du Trocadero for some Eiffel Tower time, wander the Champs-Élysées, then stop back at the hotel to freshen up before taking yourself a bit further afield for dinner — go for Bistrot des Tournelles, another excellent spot for homemade pork terrine, steak frites, chocolate mousse, and other French comforts.

[myaffiliate type="normal" button_name="Book your stay at Le Meurice – Dorchester Collection via Booking.com" url="https://www.booking.com/hotel/fr/le-meurice-paris.en-gb.html?aid=356980&label=gog235jc-1DCAsoTUIQbGUtbWV1cmljZS1wYXJpc0gzWANobIgBAZgBCbgBF8gBDNgBA-gBAYgCAagCA7gC0L_AqwbAAgHSAiQ2MDY2N2RhYy01ZDc2LTRmYWItOTk5ZC1mNDc3ZTViM2M4NTfYAgTgAgE&sid=71a759f476efdc925754880a959dd178&dist=0&keep_landing=1&sb_price_type=total&type=total&" align="center" class="affiliate-five"] [myaffiliate type="normal" button_name="Book your stay at Le Meurice – Dorchester Collection via Agoda.com" url="https://www.agoda.com/le-meurice_11/hotel/paris-fr.html?finalPriceView=1&isShowMobileAppPrice=false&cid=1731113&numberOfBedrooms=&familyMode=false&adults=2&children=0&rooms=1&maxRooms=0&checkIn=2023-12-12&isCalendarCallout=false&childAges=&numberOfGuest=0&missingChildAges=false&travellerType=1&showReviewSubmissionEntry=false&currencyCode=INR&isFreeOccSearch=false&isCityHaveAsq=false&pushId=CgYIgMXeqwYSBgiA6OOrBhgBILKJzAYqCioIIgIIASoCCAQ%3D951d3c58-1400-a623-a54e-9a361165bbcc_20231206_13&los=1&searchrequestid=f1b0d074-6bb3-4453-aa09-ad14c8ae5ab9&ds=KhLtyK6bOqQvb7B0" align="center" class="affiliate-six"]

Paris in one week

paris trip
Image Credit: Page Light Studios/Getty Images

La chance! (What luck!) You can take your days a bit easier than the itinerary suggested here, lingering a little longer at cafes perhaps and spreading out more museum visits (you really shouldn’t miss Musée Bourdelle in this case). While you could easily spend the whole week in Paris, you might want to plan an overnight to Versailles, where you should book a royally exceptional stay at the opulent Airelles Château de Versailles, Le Grand Contrôle, the only hotel on the palace grounds.

If you’re visiting Paris in winter, you’ll want to make time for the festive holiday markets, while in summer, the Seine beckons with its faux beach. Whatever the season, the best thing you can do with your extra time is allow yourself to wander aimlessly, letting the city reveal its magic to you.

20 Best Places To Live In Europehttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/th/destinations/europe/best-places-to-live-in-europe/2023-12-10T09:00:35+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/th/?p=46262best places to live in europe

In 2022, more than 75,000 Americans moved to Europe. The Netherlands, for example, saw an increase from 15,500 to 24,000 Americans moving in over the last five years, while Spain’s American expat numbers jumped 13 percent, from an estimated 20,000 to nearly 34,000 in the same time frame, according to statistics from the European Union.

Be it for the food and culture, the lower cost of living, or personal opportunity, a move to Europe can offer a lot in terms of life-changing experiences.

“I moved to Spain in 2018, and since then, my life has been filled with exploring new places, meeting new people, learning about local cultures, and uncovering hidden gems,” said Nadia Podrabinek, founder of WhyThisPlace.com. “Barcelona, my home since 2018, is, for me, the best place to live in Europe. This vibrant city strikes a perfect balance between urban hustle and beach town relaxation. The local cuisine, a gastronomic extravaganza, will delight your taste buds with delicacies like tapas, paella, and the world-renowned Catalan cava. Art lovers will be entranced by the city’s architectural marvels, from the whimsical designs of Antoni Gaudí to the contemporary art showcased at MACBA. And let’s not forget the friendly locals — the Catalans — who will welcome you warmly into their community.”

Where else in the continent should you consider relocating?

Here are 20 of the best places to live in Europe

Lisbon, Portugal

Valencia, the third-largest city in Spain, was crowned the number-one city to live in as part of InterNations’ 2022 Expat City Ranking. And that’s no surprise to Patricia Palacios, cofounder of España Guide. “Located on the Mediterranean coast of the Iberian Peninsula, the beautiful city of Valencia boasts more than 300 sunny days per year with mild winters and warm summers. Moreover, the city is home to two urban beaches with fine golden sand to make the most of its awesome weather,” she said. “The list of Valencia’s charms goes on and on. From its picturesque old town to the lush riverbed park with the neo-futurist City of Arts and Sciences, Valencia is definitely a feast for the eyes.”

Diverse and breathtakingly beautiful, the forever sunny golden island of Phuket in Thailand is one of the best places to travel to for the fiery Arians, who like to pause and play in their lives from time to time. The ram, symbolising Aries, has always been the most spontaneous of all signs. Phuket perfectly matches this fiery energy and offers them an action-packed trip complete with a plethora of experiences to choose from. The tropical climate adequately suits their sunny disposition.

One of the fanciest places to travel to on earth, Zurich in Switzerland is a perfect 2024 hotspot for the indulgent zodiac sign of Taurus. The earth sign, denoted by a celestial bull, is ruled by Venus, the planet of love and money. This explains their expensive taste in life, which is reflected in their travel habits too. The snow-capped mountains, natural beauty and luxury hotels of this place will soothe their souls.

Yet another South Asian wonder, the Havelock Island in the Andamans is famous for its pristine beaches, which have remained somewhat untouched by humans. This crustacean water sign likes to escape and hibernate away from the hustle and bustle of day-to-day life, and therefore, they would be perfectly at home at this destination complete with exotic marine life and luxury resorts.

Scorpio (October 23-November 21): Kyrgyzstan

Scorpio, represented by the scorpion, is one of the most misunderstood zodiac signs because of their intensity, passion and slightly dark outlook towards life. They are ruled by Pluto, the planet of darkness, destruction and rebirth. Because of their inherent traits, Scorpios tend to choose off-beat destinations, and Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia is sure to stimulate their intelligent and intuitive senses. The place is full of old bazaars, architecture influenced by Russian colonisation, and a unique dining scene.

Sagittarius (November 22-December 21): Masai Mara

Masai Mara is an African wonderland, perfect for adventure-seekers who are genuine explorers, always bitten by a wanderlust bug. Sagittarius is symbolised by an archer and is the most thrill-seeking sign on the zodiac wheel because it is ruled by Jupiter, the planet of travel. Sagittarians would love to experience the wildlife safaris at its National Park and to be one with the animal kingdom.

Capricorn (December 22-January 19): Austria

Austria is known for its awe-inspiring nature, grand ballet and opera venues, and palaces on beautiful gardens. Captured on the big screen and popular for its stunning views, this destination, and not just its capital city, Vienna, is one of the most scenic places to travel to in Europe in 2024. Capricorn is a sign denoted by the sea goat and ruled by Saturn, the planet of discipline. After working hard and focusing on their duties, Capricorns need a break to let themselves loose, relax and unwind. There is no better destination than Austria, which could offer them all this and more.

Aquarius (January 20-February 18): The Amazon

The main Aquarian trait is to be humanitarian, progressive and giving towards the community. The greatest and densest forest on the planet is the perfect playground for this intelligent air sign. Unlike the other two air signs, Gemini and Libra, Aquarius does not like to mingle with people as it is more comfortable introspecting alone. Hence, the Brazilian Ecuadorian forest is the perfect place for this zodiac sign to travel to in 2024.

Meditative, calm and peaceful, the last zodiac sign is Pisces, denoted by the twin fish swimming in opposite directions. Often accused of being slightly cut off from reality, they are ruled by Neptune, the planet of dreams and fantasies. The Phi Phi Islands in Thailand provide the fish a much-needed break from routine as they immerse themselves in the clear blue waters here.

San Marino, California, and Shere, Surrey (The Holiday, 2006)

Remember Amanda’s (Cameron Diaz) luxurious home from The Holiday (2006)? It is a lush Tuscan-style mansion in San Marino, California, located precisely at 1883 Orlando Road, San Marino. Please note that the house is private, so you can’t go inside or take pictures without permission. Meanwhile, Iris (Kate Winslet) stays in the village of Shere, Surrey, England. Visit The White Horse Pub featured in the film, and explore must-see attractions like the Silent Pool Distillery, Albury Organic Vineyard, and the Shere Museum. The ethereal village is also featured in Four Weddings and a Funeral, The Wedding Date, and Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001). Unfortunately, Iris’ cottage was built for the movie. The production team took inspiration from the real-life Honeysuckle Cottage, near Dorking in Holmsbury St Mary!

Selfridges Department Store, London (Love Actually, 2003)

No points for guessing, the Selfridges Department Store in London makes our list draped in the holiday spirit of Love Actually (2003). With several humorous encounters shot around the city, one memorable scene features Alan Rickman attempting a quick purchase while Rowan Atkinson leisurely decorates the gift with cinnamon sticks and Christmas candies. Rickman’s comedic frustration adds a hilarious touch to the film.

Visit the Selfridges Store to dunk yourself in the holiday spirit. Additionally, make the most of Christmas in London by ice-skating at the Somerset House, exploring cosy Christmas pop-ups, enjoying carols at St. Pauls, and checking out the Winter Light exhibit at the South Bank Centre.

Los Angeles, California (Bad Santa, 2003)

Among the most offbeat Christmas films, Bad Santa (2003), aces the dark-comedy-crime-genre. The protagonist, Willie (played by Billy Bob Thornton), is a fraudster dressed as Santa and prepares to burgle a mall. Thurman and his grandma’s home, which later becomes Willie’s abode, is located at 7211 Whitehall Lane, West Hills, in Los Angeles. You can also grab a beer at the Florida Beach Bar, which makes an appearance by the same name in Bad Santa (2003). Willie hits up this bar in the film, and you can too, at 54th Place, Long Beach.

Haul up the fun by visiting Florida’s Magic Kingdom Park, Universal Islands of Adventure, Discovery Cove, and a sea of buzzing beaches.

Illinois (Prancer, 1989)

Possibly one of the sweetest Christmas movies, Prancer (1989) revolves around 8-year-old Jessica (played by Rebecca Harrell), who believes she has discovered one of Santa’s reindeer. The shots along the striking stone formations were reeled at Starved Rock Estate Park, Illinois. Some sequences in the film were also shot at The Inn, located at the Old Republic in New Carlisle, as well as in the town of Michigan.

If you’re spending the holiday season in Illinois, we recommend visiting the German-style Christkindlmarket, hitching a ride on the CTA Holiday Train and Bus, and ice-skating at Maggie Daley Park.

10 Things You Should Order At The Cheesecake Factory Thailandhttps://www.travelandleisureasia.com/th/dining/food/10-things-you-should-order-at-the-cheesecake-factory-thailand/2023-12-10T03:00:24+00:00https://www.travelandleisureasia.com/th/?p=47460The Cheesecake Factory

The Cheesecake Factory opened its first location in Thailand, being the first branch in the whole of Southeast Asia. With over 200 items on the menu, we know exactly the ones you should try.

People frequenting CentralWorld in recent months certainly already had their interests piqued before The Cheesecake Factory opened. After all, it’s the first-ever branch in Thailand, and many were looking to see if the global fame surrounding the cheesecakes is really worth the hype. But The Cheesecake Factory isn’t just about cheesecakes, despite the name. It’s a full-on family restaurant with so many dishes to choose from. Italian, Korean, Mexican, and even weekend brunch options — flipping through the menu might just give you whiplash.

So, after some delicious on-site journalism, we put together a handy list of 10 things you should order at The Cheesecake Factory Thailand.

10 things you should order at The Cheesecake Factory Thailand

Bee Sting Flatbread Pizza

The Cheesecake Factory

Yes, The Cheesecake Factory has a section dedicated to flatbread pizzas, and they’re not half bad. Everything is housemade, including their pizza dough. The highlight is the Bee Sting, made with parmesan, Italian sausage, pepperoni, bacon, and their special honey sauce, and topped with some Calabrian chillies to balance that sweetness. Don’t worry, the chillies are from America, so it won’t be that spicy.

Stuffed Mushrooms

The Cheesecake Factory

Fontina and parmesan cheese are stuffed inside shiitake mushrooms, baked to perfection, and then poured on top is marinara wine sauce and a garnish of garlic and herbs. It’s one of those dishes that everyone on the table will try, and you’ll find each component coming together harmoniously. Note that it’s quite heavy from the cheese, so share with some company.

California Omelette

The Cheesecake Factory

Some Southern comfort never hurt anyone, especially not when served with some heartwarming baked potatoes and toast. The California Omelette contains mushrooms, green onion, tomato, garlic, and shallots, along with some cheddar and Swiss cheese, and a generous dollop of sour cream. Topped with two slices of avocado, it’s a burst of flavour perfect for breakfast or brunch.

Chicken Madeira

The Chicken Madeira is quite a unique dish that involves an ingredient such as the star: Madeira. Madeira is a wine created in the Portugal region of the same name, with earthy notes of hazelnut, coffee, and burnt caramel. That wine is turned into a sauce, and spread nicely on top of sautéed chicken breasts, fresh asparagus, mushrooms, and mozzarella cheese. Served alongside some mashed potatoes, it’s officially the franchise’s most popular chicken dish.

Miso Salmon

Oh yes, The Cheesecake Factory also does Japanese, and the Miso Salmon is just what you need to satisfy the cravings you didn’t know you had before. The salmon is marinated with miso, put atop white rice, and served with snow peas and delicious miso sauce. Plus, the portion allocated is huge, so one dish will keep you full until dessert.

Monte Cristo Sandwich

The Cheesecake Factory

In Thailand, we’d argue that the Monte Cristo isn’t as widespread as its sister, the Croque Monsieur. The egg-dipped-then-deep-fried crunchy French toast is stuffed with bacon, grilled ham, scrambled eggs, and melted Swiss cheese. They then dust some powdered sugar on top of this beautiful creation, and serve it with strawberry preserves to dip in. It’s one of the more underrated dishes in their brunch menu. Yes, they have a brunch menu.

Americana Cheeseburger

The Cheesecake Factory

It wouldn’t be an American diner without a banging cheeseburger. The Americana Cheeseburger has both American and cheddar cheese on its beef patty, with lettuce, tomatoes, grilled onions, pickles, their secret sauce, and some crunchy potato chips on top. The cheeseburgers at The Cheesecake Factory Thailand all use Angus beef and are served with a choice of French fries or green salad.

Godiva Chocolate Cheesecake

The Cheesecake Factory

If you’re hesitant to pay the THB 350+ price tag for a slice of cheesecake, this is the one that is so worth the money. The Cheesecake Factory’s collab with Godiva will transport you to chocolate heaven, with the chocolate cheesecake topped with chocolate mousse and a piece of Godiva chocolate. The creation is also completely flourless.

Mango Key Lime Cheesecake

The Cheesecake Factory

The natural sweetness of mango, balanced with the acidity of key lime — that’s the idea behind the mango key lime cheesecake. Those delicious, fluffy layers are put on top of a vanilla coconut macaroon crust and then topped with mango mousse. It’s the perfect dessert for the hot climate. Note that the portions are huge, so bring a friend.

Fresh Strawberry Cheesecake

The Cheesecake Factory

It’s the one that started it all: the original Cheesecake Factory cheesecake that has remained their most popular edition for almost 40 years. Each slice feels light, tastes tight, and never disappoints (we couldn’t find another word that rhymes). We recommend you get the Fresh Strawberry, which will have fresh strawberries served with the original cheesecake. The sweetness balances the richness of the cheesecake, and won’t feel too heavy even if you’re having it all to yourself.
