Built over Krishna Sagar in Andhra Pradesh’s Nalgonda district, Nagarjuna Sagar is a man-made marvel surrounded by rolling hills and lush foliage. Now, it is not technically a hill station but is just as gratifying. It frames the three hills of Hyderabad surrounding the rivers, the Nagarjuna Sagar Dam, and water gushing through the dam’s 12 gates with graceful ferocity. Built across the Krishna River, on the border between Andhra Pradesh‘s Guntur district and Telangana’s Nalgonda district, the Nagarjuna Sagar Dam is the world’s largest masonry dam. Here, you can take a boat ride down the Nagarjuna Valley, appreciate the Ethiopia Waterfalls, explore the ancient Buddhist monuments and relics at Nagarjunakonda, and pay respects at Pillalamarri Shiva Temple.

The film was shot in Ooty, with the beloved hill station playing the role of ‘Riverdale’, the mythical town where the Archies gang navigates life, school, romance, and squabbles. The Archies shooting locations have been kept pretty hush-hush, but if the trailer is anything to go by, here are a few best places in Ooty where The Archies was likely filmed.

Nilgiri Mountain Railways

The Nilgiri Mountain Railways, affectionately known as the ‘Toy Train’, offers one of the most scenic train rides in the country. Traversing hills, forests, bridges and tunnels, the train and its surroundings are featured in the movie for sure. The entire 46-km train journey is one of the slowest you will ever experience. After all, you’ll only get on the train to enjoy the splendid scenery, and that is done as slowly as possible. Here’s an interesting tidbit: it is one of the only three railways in India recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Ooty Lake

The Ooty Lake, a quintessential part of the hill station, is likely a filming location for the picnic scenes in The Archies. The lake is surrounded by Eucalyptus trees adding to the serenity of the place. With lots of sunny/shady spots to sit and marvel at the beauty of this man-made lake constructed in 1824, you can also enjoy a boat ride on the lake, with rowing and paddle boating being the most popular options.

Red Fort, Delhi

Forts in India
Image credit: Alex Furr, Attribution, via Wikimedia Commons

Spread across 256 acres of land and surrounded by a striking 18-metre-high wall, the spectacular fort got its name from the red-coloured stone extensively used in its construction. Famously known as ‘Lal Quila’, the Red Fort is undoubtedly one of the most iconic monuments in the country. It took almost ten years to complete construction on the entire fort. Measuring 900 metres by 550 metres, the walls of the fort cover a perimeter of 2.41 km and rise to a height of 33.5 metres.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site in the heart of Old Delhi is a testament to Mughal grandeur and sophistication. Its intricate design, featuring ornate arches, delicate marble inlays, and sprawling courtyards, showcases the zenith of Mughal architecture. Today, it remains a vibrant reminder of the country’s struggle for independence, and an annual focal point for the nation’s Independence Day celebrations, where the tricolour flag is unfurled from the iconic Lahori Gate.

Historical significance: The construction of the Red Fort began in 1638 under the rule of Emperor Shah Jahan of the Mughal Empire. It served as the main residence of Mughal emperors for over 200 years and witnessed numerous grand celebrations, including the famous Peacock Throne where Emperor Shah Jahan received foreign dignitaries. During the Indian Rebellion of 1857, the British took control of the fort, when they also removed several precious items, including the Koh-i-Noor diamond, from the fort. It then came under British rule and lost its status as a royal residence.

Forts in India
Image credit: A.Savin, FAL, via Wikimedia Commons

Made from red sandstone and marble, the remarkable fortress of Agra spans 94 acres and has also been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Often overshadowed by the wondrous Taj Mahal in the city, Agra Fort must be visited for its grand courtyards, the workmanship of the artists, and the Indo-Saracenic architecture. The structure was built by the Mughal emperor Akbar and served as the royal residence of the Mughal Kings until 1638. The fort houses several exquisite buildings, namely Moti Masjid, Diwan-i-Aam, Diwan-i-Khas and Musamman Burj, Jahangir’s Palace, Khaas Mahal and Sheesh Mahal, which are a visual delight.

Agra Fort is not only an architectural marvel but also a repository of India’s rich history, and its stunning design continues to captivate visitors from around the world, making it a key attraction in the city of Agra.

Historical significance: Agra Fort’s origins can be traced back to the 11th century when it was originally a brick fort. However, the present-day structure was built during the reign of Emperor Akbar in the mid-16th century. Agra Fort witnessed important historical events, including the imprisonment of Shah Jahan by his son Aurangzeb, who later died within its walls, looking across the Yamuna River at the Taj Mahal, the monument he had built for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. Under British colonial rule, parts of the fort were used for military purposes, and it fell into a state of neglect.

The history of Indian railways is a story of innovation, determination, and transformation. With its inception dating back to the British colonial era, Indian Railways has evolved into a vast and intricate network, known for its unparalleled reach and operational complexity. Join us as we embark on a journey through time and tracks to explore the oldest railway stations in the country, each a remarkable testament to India’s enduring love affair with the railways.

It all began with the inaugural train journey from Mumbai to Thane in 1853, covering a short distance but marking a giant leap in the country’s transportation history. As the rail network expanded, so did the railway stations, many of which were designed and built during the colonial period. These stations stand as living monuments to a bygone era, showcasing not only the architectural brilliance of the time but also preserving historical narratives that continue to captivate travellers.

Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2004, its gorgeous Indo-Saracenic architectural style is a sight to behold.

Kalpa

Nestled on the banks of the Sutlej River, Kalpa is a small town known for its apple orchards and the sacred Kinnaur Kailash Mountain. The Kinnaur Kailash is also a holy pilgrimage site, believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva. You can also embark on the relatively easy (but very rewarding) hike to Chakka, spanning 3-4 kilometres. Along the way, admire the snow-capped mountains, waterfalls and meadows. When in Kalpa, be sure to visit the Sapni Fort (or Sapni Kothi). In addition to its authentic Himachali architecture replete with intricate wooden carvings, it is a testament to the history and architectural heritage of the region. To learn more about the Kinnauri culture, we recommend visiting the Roghi Village. There, you’ll encounter traditional wooden houses adorned with carvings, terraced fields, and friendly locals. Or, you can also head to the Kothi Village, where visitors can experience rural life, walk through apple orchards, and feast on fresh produce.

Jalori Pass

offbeat hill stations in himachal

Located 73 kilometres from Kullu, Jalori Pass stands tall at 10,800 feet above sea level. Dividing the Sutlej and Beas watersheds, the Jalori Pass stages unmatched sights right in between the two water bodies. While the destination is ideal for ardent trekkers and biking enthusiasts, it has plenty in store for families too. The Sareolsar Lake Trek, a roughly 5 km journey to the resplendent Saphire Lake, can only be reached on foot, making it a unique adventure. Similarly, the Raghupur Fort Trek is family-friendly and promises 3 km of unmatched views of the valley. For seasoned trekkers, we recommend heading to the Shringa Rishi Temple, about 19 km from the base. However, one cannot visit the temple between December and March due to extreme snowfall. Overtake the temple slightly, and you’ll be greeted by Chehni Kothi, a large fortified tower housing a beautiful temple. Lastly, explore the Great Himachal National Park, situated 63 km from the base. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this park is home to over 30 species of mammals and 300 species of birds.

Located 82 km from Shimla, the quaint towns of Thanedar and Kotgarh are known for their apple, cherry, and strawberry orchards. To indulge in unparalleled landscapes, head to Stokes Farm for its apple orchards, or Jor Bagh for its enchanting meadows. While the Sutlej View Point is a famous attraction in the region, we recommend clubbing it with the Mahamaya Temple, a beautiful temple dedicated to Goddess Kali. Tourists can also pay respects at Hatu Temple, Arya Samaj Temple, and St Mary’s Church. In the winter, the meadows of Narkananda are blanketed with thick snow, creating ideal conditions for skiing.

Dharamkot

Nestled in the Dhauladhar range, the village of Dharamkot, just 3 km from McLeodganj, exudes a distinct aura — spiritual and some might say, hippie. Unlike Dharamshala and McLeodganj, which host numerous monasteries and museums, Dharamkot is focused on self-discovery and harmony with nature. The small village can be navigated on foot, for the most part, and has very few motorable roads.

Over the years, the increase in tourist footfall has elevated the culinary scene in Dharamkot to new heights. The village is dotted with quaint cafes serving Israeli, Italian, Indian, and American cuisines. Here, the locally developed Bhagsu Cake is a must-try. Additionally, the village delights with pottery courses, yoga workshops, meditation sessions, and alternative therapies to promote holistic well-being and joy.

Sissu, also known as Khwaling, is nestled along the right bank of the Chandra River in Lahaul Valley. While most people know Sissu as a gateway to Ladakh, Spiti and Lahaul, this cosy town has a lot to offer on its own. Embark on the Ghepan Ghat Lake Trek, admire the pristine Sissu Lake, and visit the Sissu Waterfall, which descends from a height of 50 metres.
