The newest mall in Bangkok may have just opened its doors last week but it already has a festive market you could visit—that is, if you can handle the crowds. Located in the middle of the ground floor, EmSphere’s market boasts a variety of things for you to enjoy from drinks to food. There are also some seats and tables for you to enjoy your delicacies there and then, but again, it’s going to be a bit of a challenge with the crowds. There’s no definite date as to when this market will end but it will probably be around January, so pay a visit soon.

Anantara Riverside Bangkok’s Longtail by the River is offering a sumptuous festive spread that includes grilled seafood, turkey roulade, and sweet delightful desserts. Thailand is one of the most accessible and well-loved travel destinations in Southeast Asia. It’s a great place to visit any time of year, but if you’re looking to hit the beach, you’ll want to book a trip for some time during the dry, sunny season between November and early April. Weather can vary throughout the year, and crowds and prices fluctuate accordingly.

“Thailand is a tropical country with two distinct seasons,” said Jack Tydeman, a member of T+L’s A-List of travel advisors and the Southeast Asia senior specialist at Audley Travel. “It is typically warm all year round. However, the winter months from November through March are the peak dry season and are considered the best time to travel to the majority of the country. April is the hottest month in Thailand before the country moves into the wetter season from May through October.”

These are Thailand’s three travel seasons:

• High: November to March
• Shoulder: April to June and the month of October
• Low: July to September

One caveat is that Thailand is a big country stretching more than 1,000 miles (1,609.34 km) from north to south, so conditions will also depend on where you are. For example, November marks the beginning of the sunny high season on the Andaman coast, but also the start of the monsoon season on the Gulf side.

So, before you book your jungle tree house and island boat tour, read on for the best times to go to Thailand.

For ideal weather, visit Thailand during the dry season, which for most of the country kicks off in November and lasts through March or even into April and May. A major exception is the Lower Gulf — home to the island paradises of Koh Samui, Ko Pha-ngan, and Koh Tao — which is rainiest from September through December.

On the Andaman coast, November to February has the coolest, most comfortable weather, with average temps in the 80s and little chance of rain. This means clear, blue waters and gorgeous scenery that’s lush from the previous monsoon season. On top of perfect weather, this time of year sees major Thai festivals and the Western Christmas and New Year holidays, so you’re also looking at Thailand’s biggest crowds and highest prices. Time your trip for early November and you might just beat the throngs.

As for the low season, it’s best to temper your expectations. “It is possible to travel over the summer months. However, you may see some short, sharp showers,” he said. “As the east coast of Thailand has its own unique weather patterns, summer is actually the drier season there.”

Thailand is a relatively affordable destination throughout the year, though travellers may find the steepest discounts on flights, accommodations, and tours during the low/monsoon season (July to September).

“The low season does have its advantages, as it’s quieter and the rates are typically lower. This makes Thailand a great value destination during the summer,” said Tydeman. “However, some months are hotter and some are wetter. As Thailand is in a tropical region, the rains tend to be short, sharp showers for most of the country. Summer is now commonly referred to as ‘green season’ due to the rains turning the countryside green and filling the rivers and waterfalls.”

Naturally, visiting during the wet season is a gamble. Rains could come in brief cloudbursts, or they could come in days-long downpours that affect boat service and island access. July brings more summer tourists and August tends to see cloudy skies and regular heavy rainfall. September is the wettest and least crowded month. To split the difference, consider visiting during the shoulder season (April through June, or October), when rains are generally of the brief afternoon storm variety.

Travelers should try to experience at least one of Thailand’s many festivals, which celebrate everything from flowers and fruit to monkeys and elephants.

Two of the most beloved are the late-November Lantern Festivals: Yi Peng, during which participants release thousands of rice-paper lanterns into the sky; and Loy Krathong, for which Thais create banana-leaf baskets, fill them with flowers and burning candles, and release them onto lakes, rivers, and canals. Chiang Mai is the Yi Peng epicentre (tourists can participate with ticketed entry, starting at around USD 130/HKD 1,013) and Loy Krathong is celebrated across the country.

The Chinese New Year in January or February turns Bangkok’s Chinatown into a sea of dragons, drummers, worshippers, and visitors, all under the glow of firecrackers and red lanterns. Also in February is the three-day Flower Festival in Chiang Mai, which culminates with a parade of elaborate floats painstakingly decorated with chrysanthemums, damask roses, and other varieties.

Songkran (a.k.a. Water Splashing Festival) ushers in the Thai New Year in mid-April with parades, parties, and performances across the country. “Songkran turns Thailand into one big water fight,” said Tydeman. “It also coincides with the hottest month of the year, so it’s a perfect excuse to get wet.”

The Vegetarian Festival takes place in late September or early October and commemorates a nine-day abstinence from meat in honour of the Nine Emperor Gods of Taoism.

Divers from all over the world flock to Thailand to explore the country’s famous underwater sites and stunning marine parks. Thailand’s east coast is largely dive-friendly throughout the year. If you plan an excursion to the Andaman Sea — home to the extraordinary Similan and Surin Islands — time the trip between November and April when the seas are calm and visibility is clearest. Also, keep in mind that Similan and Surin marine parks close from mid-May to mid-October.

The best times to visit Thailand for Island-hopping

Boating from one jungle-topped limestone island to another is a great way to explore Thailand, but downpours between May and October can put the kibosh on nautical fun. Some southern Andaman resorts are even close for the rainy season.

“The islands off the west coast, like Phuket, are best to visit in the winter months, whereas the islands off the east coast, like Koh Samui, are great to visit in the summer,” said Tydeman.

This means you should time your bouncing around Phuket, the Phi Phi Islands, Ko Lanta, and other Andaman isles between late October (when the rains taper off) and May or June. Ko Lanta is effectively closed during the monsoon season — you may be able to get there, but accommodation options are seriously limited. Conversely, Gulf of Thailand idylls Koh Samui, Koh Tao, and Ko Pha-Ngan are at their rainiest and windiest between October and December.

If you want to avoid the crowds, keep in mind that students from Australia and Europe flock to Thailand’s islands in June and July to work and party during their summer breaks.

The best times to visit Thailand for shopping

No matter what time of year you visit Thailand, try to fit in at least one weekend in Bangkok so you can experience the vast Chatuchak Weekend Market, open from 9 am – 6 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. In fact, most of the stalls are covered, so you can visit even on a rainy day.

Tydeman also recommended visiting Bangkok’s night markets, which offer “everything from original artwork and designer bags to kitschy souvenirs and secondhand books.”

Chiang Mai’s weekend markets deserve a look as well. Every Saturday night, Wua Lai Road (just south of the Old City) closes to traffic and hosts hundreds of silversmiths, wood carvers, clothing purveyors, sketch artists, and performing musicians. On Sundays, the scene essentially repeats itself along the length of Ratchadamnoen Road, which bustles with artisans, food vendors, and massage stations.

Named Christmas on A Great Street, the annual Orchard Road Christmas light-up will return for its 40th edition this year (2023). Besides the signature dazzling lights that make excellent photo opportunities, this year’s edition will also mark the debut of a street party on Christmas Eve.

This yearly light-up at Orchard Road ties in with the festive holiday season to draw visitors to the famed Singapore shopping belt.

To signal the start of Christmas on A Great Street, President Tharman Shanmugaratnam will officiate the Light-Up Ceremony at Shaw House Urban Plaza on November 16.

In addition to marvelling at the bright lights and sparkling decorations, visitors can bask in the yuletide celebrations with the festivities’ first Christmas Eve street party.

Held on December 24, the street party will stretch from Paterson junction to Bideford junction, and the affected roads will be closed to traffic from 6pm onwards. The party will take place from 8pm to 12.30am.

Visitors can look forward to merry-making activities like music band and dance performances, live Christmas carols, and Meet and greet sessions with Santa Claus. Furthermore, those who get hungry while enjoying the programmes can grab a bite at the food trucks-filled Christmas Market.

Not only can visitors countdown to Christmas Day at Christmas on A Great Street, but they also can countdown to usher in the New Year (2024).

The Return of Great Christmas Villages

It certainly isn’t Christmas without Christmas Villages. Back again this year are the Great Christmas Villages. Visitors can look forward to three satellite villages, up from one in 2022.

Located outside Shaw House Urban Plaza, Ngee Ann City Civic Plaza and Plaza Singapura, all Christmas Villages have carnival rides, games, pop-up stores, and food and beverage kiosks to keep everyone entertained for hours.

The Christmas Village at Shaw House Urban Plaza will open first on November 24 and feature an exclusive double-storey carousel and Ferris wheel. The other villages at Ngee Ann City Civic Plaza and Plaza Singapura will commence on December 1 and 8, respectively.

Highlights for the Ngee Ann City Christmas Village will be live performances by local musicians like Daniel Sid, LAYYI and The Cold Cut Duo on Friday and Saturday evenings, arcade games and a swing ride. At the Plaza Singapura Christmas Village, visitors can jump for joy in a bouncy castle and get hands-on with craft workshops organised by Kiztopia.

Christmas-themed Augmented Reality (AR) Projection Displays

In collaboration with OUE Limited, this year’s Christmas on A Great Street will also feature outdoor augmented reality (AR) projection displays. Starting November 1 and ending January 1, 2024, a massive installation will illuminate the facade of Hilton Singapore Orchard. It can be enjoyed in 3D when viewed through the PopAR Live app on smartphones.

There’ll also be 25 smaller AR displays along the pedestrian walkway from ION Orchard to Mandarin Gallery.

To hype up the yuletide spirit in the day, familiar music will broadcast from speakers mounted on 44 lamp posts along Orchard Road.

The Light-Up Ceremony, organised by Orba (Orchard Road Business Association) and the Community Chest, aims to raise funds to support more than 100 social service agencies running over 200 critical programmes. Notably, Hitachi Asia has been the main sponsor for this annual light-up for 33 consecutive years.

In the ancient city of Luang Prabang, even popular spots feel intimate. Boats cruise the Mekong River — almost all head out around a golden hour and cruise through twilight — yet it seems as if you’re floating alone on this iconic waterway, which flows from China to Vietnam and through Northern Laos on its way.

As I lay on the wooden deck of a traditional slow boat, one that Sofitel Luang Prabang uses for guests, I watched the outline of the hills in the distance, and in the foreground, fishermen standing on their respective sampans. For a moment, time stood still; it was just the fishermen, me, and the Mekong.

Visitor numbers have surged here in recent months (mostly due to the border with neighbouring China reopening), but Luang Prabang remains relatively under the radar among US travellers. Should someone arrive in the Laotian capital of Vientiane, they can access Luang Prabang via a new high-speed rail link that takes just two hours; the route will soon continue north and up to China. However, if you’re like me, you will fly in from Bangkok. From there, Air Asia and Bangkok Airways offer daily service for the less than two-hour flight to Vientiane.

A travel guide to Southeast Asia’s Luang Prabang

The markets of Luang Prabang

Some 500,000 people, across more than 60 different ethnic groups, call Luang Prabang home, the Khmu, Lao Loum, and Hmong being the largest Indigenous nations. People here live a decidedly laid-back and unhurried life. It’s a stark contrast to, say, Bangkok or Saigon, neighbouring Southeast Asian cities that offer international flights to this former royal capital.

In early May, the region was hot and steamy, the sky a hazy greyish-blue and permanently on the cusp of a storm that would provide temporary relief. I spent my early mornings and late evenings on the quietest streets of Luang Prabang, which you’ll find on the promontory of the historic district between the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers, east of the Royal Palace. These streets contain the largest number of heritage buildings and are a peaceful retreat from the bustle of the markets.

The morning market, operating from around 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. daily, is located in a mini-maze of alleys and backstreets near the centre of town. It’s the place to be if you want to get a taste of how people here really live. Most of the vendors — who sell everything from grilled sticky rice (khao jee) and mung bean coconut rice cakes to sun-cured pork naem, plus the day’s catch — are set up on the ground.

The night market operates from around 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. daily and is more of a tourist-focused affair, with an array of vendors setting up shop on streets that are closed to cars. While the red and blue tents along the main thoroughfare sell souvenirs and art pieces, the market has street food galore as well, like Laotian baguettes, laap, and green papaya salad.

Other things to see and do in Luang Prabang

Each day, in the pre-sunrise light, hundreds of saffron-clad monks silently walk single file through the streets of the old town. The daily Buddhist ritual of tak bat is the morning almsgiving ceremony. While visitors can watch the procession and even provide offerings, it’s important to be respectful of the sacred tradition; this isn’t just another photo opportunity.

For a more educational (and private) experience, Rosewood Luang Prabang has an alms offering experience in Phanom Village, located on the outskirts of town. Noi, the hotel’s English-speaking monk-in-residence, will guide you through the morning, which includes meditating in the temple, a life-symbolising water ritual, and a local breakfast of khao piak sen (noodle soup).

Just a few miles outside of Luang Prabang you will find quaint dirt roads, gently flowing waters, and plenty of virgin forests. Venture even further afield, about an hour from town, and you will be rewarded with a lush tropical jungle that holds Kuang Si Waterfalls, a series of cascading falls with milky turquoise waters. You can wade into several of the natural pools here, and you can also hike from the base of the falls to the top in about 30 minutes.  To blend a scenic activity with a cultural one — and to make things a bit more challenging — I trekked here from the local Khmu and Hmong village of Long Lao, a three-hour journey with a rewarding swim in the falls at the very end.

Where to stay in Luang Prabang

While it may be more commonly known as a backpackers’ town, Luang Prabang has no shortage of luxury hotels, including Rosewood and Aman properties. Many have very small footprints (25 rooms or fewer) and personalised service.

Rosewood Luang Prabang, nestled in a lush valley about 10 minutes from town by car (guests can make use of complimentary transit to and from the centre), this property’s stunning grounds include its own waterfall and river. The Bill Bensley–designed hotel has an open-air lobby and restaurant as its centrepiece, with an oval-shaped pool in the background. Guests have the option of 23 rooms, including hilltop luxury tents and riverside villas with private plunge pools.

Centrally located a few minutes walk from the old town, Amantaka features 24 sumptuous suites all clustered around a leafy courtyard. Classic Laotian style meshes with 21st-century modernism here, and you have a laundry list of resort amenities, including a deep-green swimming pool, yoga studio, library, spa, and boutique.

And if you’re looking for a premium option that’s slightly easier on the wallet, the Sofitel Luang Prabang may be the perfect fit. Set within the walls of the former French governor’s residence, the hotel has 25 suites and plenty of Lao characters. All accommodations feature a private garden with a gazebo and an outdoor bathtub or private plunge pool.

Though this area is home to popular spots, including El Nido, Coron, Puerto Princesa City and Puerto Galera, there is also a range of less-known — but no less enchanting — places to explore on your visit to the area.

Oriental Mindoro

Oriental Mindoro is known for pristine beaches and excellent dive sites, but it also contains beautiful waterfalls, indigenous tribes living traditional lifestyles, and mangroves rich with local wildlife. During a visit to the province, you can visit charming villages, learn about local culture, and get into the rhythm of island life. 

Puerto Galera is a popular beach town and one of Oriental Mindoro’s best destinations. It’s perfect for scuba diving, with an average visibility of up to 40 metres, diverse marine life, including barracudas, reef sharks and sea turtles, unique night diving opportunities, and the opportunity to explore coral gardens and underwater wrecks that are suitable for beginners. 

Puerto Galera is known for lively nightlife in the town centre and on the beaches. The area around Silonay Mangrove Forest is where the most spectacular mangrove forests sit, and several local companies offer enriching tours. 

Oriental Mindoro also has a range of lesser-known destinations including Calapan City and San Teodoro. Set your sites on these up-and-coming places if you like your getaways to be calm and quiet. 

When venturing inland in Oriental Mindoro, be sure to make a stop at the multi-level Tamaraw Falls. It’s one of the area’s biggest natural attractions, with cascades streaming down a craggy cliff in the middle of an untouched forest and perfect for swimming and picnicking. The falls are about 45 km from Puerto Galera and can be reached by bus or jeepney and a 15-minute hike on a well-marked path. 

The Bulalacao Islands of Target, Suguicay, Pocanil and Buyayao are ideal for visitors searching for a destination quieter than Puerto Galera. Discover old-fashioned fishing villages, expansive white sandbars for walking, small huts for camping and a true back-to-nature experience. 

Occidental Mindoro

Look no further than the private Pandan Island for a magical and luxurious getaway in Occidental Mindoro. Featuring just one resort and can be accessible via private boat transfer from Abra de Ilog or via fish landing (BFAR) in Sablayan. Pandan Island is loved by couples for its romantic atmosphere and couple-friendly activities, such as plunge pools, fine dining, and a world-class spa.

Though far-flung by most estimations, Apo Reef Natural Park is worth the trip for nature lovers. The protected marine park has an extensive coral reef and dolphins can often be spotted. Once there, visitors enjoy snorkelling in clear waters to see the area’s colourful corals and tropical fish, including schools of angelfish, surgeonfish, and jackfish. For the truly adventurous, try rustic overnight camping under the stars.

Mount Iglit-Baco National Park is another worthwhile destination in Occidental Mindoro. With unforgettable hiking in a protected mountain region dotted with indigenous Mangyan villages, guests are sure to feel, learn, and experience things they have not seen before. 

Reaching this area requires a bus or jeepney journey and a hike to reach the trailheads. Once there, treks range from casual afternoon hikes to challenging, multi-day camping endeavours that are best accomplished with hired guides and porters. Along these routes, visitors have reported seeing tamaraw buffalos, families of wild pigs, and cloud rats. 

Marinduque

Torrijos White Beach, in the town of Torrijos, is one of the stars of Marinduque. With its powdery white sand — which draws comparisons to Boracay without the crowds and high prices — this is a worthy stop on your next visit to the region. The sunsets and sunrises are colourful, the beach is fringed with palm trees, and swimming conditions are near-perfect. Stay in a rustic beach bungalow and feast on fresh Filipino-style seafood at beach stalls, or take a boat tour to nearby coves, islands, and snorkelling spots. 

For an idyllic getaway with off-the-grid appeal, set your sights on Maniwaya Island. With only a few local beachfront huts, most visitors only spend a day on this island, but it is a secluded paradise for those looking to escape it all truly. Explorers can fill their days by hiking to hilltop and island hopping before relaxing with freshly grilled seafood on the beach. 

Gasan Church is another draw for fans of history and Spanish-era colonial architecture. Originally built in 1660 by Jesuit missionaries, it’s one of the country’s oldest churches, with a colourfully intricate ceiling mural displaying scenes from Jesus’s life and a unique design that throws patterns from sun beams across the altar. Romblon

Palawan

After dark, wade into the water to see the bioluminescent plankton.

Another draw to the province for archaeology fans is the Tabon Cave complex in Quezon. Nicknamed the ‘cradle of Philippine civilisation,’ it is thought to have been inhabited 50,000 years ago, and the fossils of The Tabon Man, possibly the oldest Homo sapiens sapiens fossil evidence in Southeast Asia, were excavated. The limestone caves contain a host of wonders, from stalactites and stalagmites to birds and bats, in a striking natural setting.
